what's the skinny on these things? I see alot of folks listing them on their builds, but then when the question comes up, there's a crapton of people bashing them too. I'm not an optics snob... the BSA that sits on my 22mag works well, and has served me well functionally for quite some time now. The rubberized coating is coming off and it looks like chit, but it's gonna get a coat of krylon soon anyway, so i really don't care.

I'm thinking about putting a Tasco 2.5-10x Target/Varmint scope on the .308 for a hunting/plinking and the rare shot out past 300 yards. I will take it out for longer walks when i have the chance, but most of my BPUT's are within 300y anyway. if i make it out to one of the longer ranges i'd think 10x is plenty to see a 12" gong out to a few hundred, right?

What say you guys on the functionality and reliability of these scopes on a fairly light recoil rifle?

My real goal is a max spend of 100 bucks, getting a mildot reticle with 9 or 10x max magnification and it would be nice to have either fixed parallax or side focus (not for 100 bucks methinks).

Re: Tasco Target/Varmint scopes

I have several older made in Japan Tasco scopes and they are great budget scopes. The adjustments are reliable, they hold zero. They may not have the best optics, but they didnt cost $1000 bucks. Some of us have a more stringent budget and they will work fine in my opinion. But some of Tasco's stuff is utter junk no questions. But in my experience, made in Japan is good stuff.

Re: Tasco Target/Varmint scopes

Thx for the input guys. I'm really half tempted to just swap scopes on my rifles. the 22mag would just LOVE to wear my bushy 6-18 but i hate trying to guess the mildot magnification point on my bsa. Besides...it's been such a good scope on the 22 that I hate to move it.

Re: Tasco Target/Varmint scopes

had one of the newer tasco tactical/varmints for awhile. worked fine till i put it on my 300wsm. the recoil of the wsm moved the turrets..had me scratching my head for awhile. worked fine on my 223, bit dim at higher magnification, repeatable, but the 1/4" @ 100yd adjustment only applied within a few minutes of center, then it took more clicks for the proper adjustment. np as long as u know whats happening. i ditched it as my testing scope awhile back, have upgraded enough where i dont need to deal w its quirks

Re: Tasco Target/Varmint scopes

I have a few of the 2.5-10x42 (or 44 I forget) with the mildot and target MOA turrets.

It's not as clear as my NF or Zeiss, but it tracks very well, returns to zero, etc. and I've shot it on a light 30-06 for several dozen rounds while I was waiting for something to come in.

I keep one on my 22's

They have lots and lots of vertical travel, I think I got something like 100 MOA of total vertical travel from the 1" tube. I was pretty darn impressed.

Grafs stocks the non-illuminated ones for about 70 bucks. You can't shake a stick at that deal.
