When we pay a tax, such as an income tax, sales taxes and property taxes, we are affected directly. It doesn't cost another country or business anything.
When a tariff is implemented, it's true that we, the consumer, will also pay but the other country or business in that country is also affected. The domestic business that sets up shop in another country is also affected.
So in a sense the other countries and businesses are sharing the pain. If they want to stop the economic pain they will do something about it.
Do tariffs cost a lot for everyone? Yes! However, the cost of doing nothing is greater than the cost of doing something.
The doctor says you have cancer and need radical surgery. You ask, "but won't that hurt and inconvenience me a lot?"
The doctor says yes, "but if you don't have the surgery, you will die. And the death experience might be more horrible than the surgery."
We've been suffering from the economic bullying from other countries for decades and it's about time that it stops. Tariffs are the only way to get them to stop.
