I'm gearing up to load a bunch of 55gr blasting ammo for a 10.5" AR. Normally, I would have purchased either the "223M primer" or "556M primer", but found plain ol' "SR" primers in stock and ordered 10,000 of 'em. For clarity, the following is what is listed on the Powder Valley website. I ordered the ones in the middle.

TUL223 * TUL 223 PRIMERS (KVB223M)
TULSR * TUL SMALL RIFLE PRIMERS (KVB223)
TULSRM * TUL SMALL RIFLE MAGNUM PRIMERS (KVB556M)

I've read a whole bunch on the 'net about these and found both positive and negative reviews. Just looking for people's personal experience with these primers from a trusted source.

Thanks

Re: Tula SR Primers?

Never used the "Tula", but have used a bunch of Wolf and PMC branded primers. They, by all accounts, are the same. They are all good in my rifles. The only issue I have noticed was with Wolf SRM's in 308 with Rem URBR brass (this is a SR 308 brass). I had more than a few hangfires. I did some studying on the subject and read where the Russian primers like a firm seat in the primer pocket. Tried it again and the hangfires disappeared. FWIW, the accuracy even with the hangfires was still very good, but damn irritating.

I would expect good results in your chosen application. The standard Tula/Wolf supposedly have a softer/thinner cup, but I do not know for sure.

Re: Tula SR Primers?

the plain SR primers were probably in stock cause they are pretty wimpy. Ok for stuff like 30 carb ,etc but sorta pushing it for 223 loads. got some hang fires and misfires when I tried them in some 223 ball powder loads years back when they first showed up. The other two, the 223 and the SRM are super. and yes, wolf and tula are the same.

Re: Tula SR Primers?

I've been using these primers ever since Powder Valley started getting them in. The SRP's are every bit as good as tne .223 version as long as your rifle isn't prone to slam fires.

Of course I liked them a lot more back when they were selling for around $15/thousand.

Next time around you may opt for the .223 primers for your blasting ammo just to make sure you don't have a slam fire incident.

Re: Tula SR Primers?

I have been using Tula small rifle primers for little over year now - I bought them at Powder Valley in December (2011). I have found they are prone to not ignite the powder just above 1.75% of the time. I have shot 3300 rounds, and have 1000 unused (still in box), and 700 loaded, unfired. I started to keep a log when I have a misfire in the first 200 rounds I fired.
