I work around 4 different trades aside from us wire junkies, the VAST majority of them wear Trump stickers, maga, whatever on their hardhats or have them on the gang boxes. That's quite a statement in organized labor.

It's not how the rank and file union members vote. It's about what the union does with the dues they pay. They put the money into the communist party and that will reach ten times the number of union members. Just one commercial alone will do that. Then add in the online, phone texting, phone calls and even the door to door contacting.
I find this conversation a series of anecdotal stories. Each is true in their environment.
When I worked in a shop as a young man (as a machinist), I was encouraged to produce parts more slowly, because IF the management became aware that a part could be produced in 1 minute 42 seconds, instead of 5 minutes, they would expect the same level of productivity from the other workers. It would bring up the question "why does management have to pay 5-minute Bob, the same money as 2-minute Addertooth".
I also worked for a non-union shop building large control panels and control systems for refineries and nuclear reactors. Occasionally I would be asked to go out onto a union site to install and test those panels. My manager would explain to me that the other workers around me were Union, and they HAD to believe I was union too. They asked me to pay attention to the pace which those around me were working, and to not appear "over performing" when in those environments. They said to carefully observe ALL of the breaks the union workers were doing, and to take a break as well.
I still remember a foreman coming by while I was connecting one of the panels to the refinery sensors, and pneumatic elements. He asked who my "safety officer" was. He was concerned that the wiring being connected might be out of safety tolerance, I pointed to my Simpson 260 meter, and explained I carefully check all the voltages before connecting them. Then he asked a similar question about the pneumatics, I similarly pointed to my pressure gauge. He was horribly concerned the pressure gauge didn't have a hard set red line for minimum and maximum operating pressures on my test set. I explained that I had gone to school, and learned to read numbers. I did not need painted on red-lines as a go/no-go gauge to perform my job.. he seemed horrified at the notion.
The key point which Union workers are missing is the current trend in automation. When it becomes cheaper to replace a worker with a machine, it tends to happen. You can only push up wages so much, before automation becomes a financially viable option. We are seeing automation appearing at a faster pace, even with companies which have minimum wage jobs. With the proposed 15 and hour wage, we will likely see that trend accelerate.
Eventually, the only secure jobs will be those which are hard to automate. Wage protection is a wonderful thing, until the machines show up.
For the record, I actually believe Unions had a major hand in destroying Detroit.

Once I was past my early 20s, I took a different path FS1. I chose to train up in careers that did not require a Union to assure my wages were fair. It can suck to rely upon an intermediate, to assure you get reasonable treatment. If you need an intermediary, then you may be a replaceable cog.
Once trained, if I was unhappy with either my wages, or conditions, I would explain to my employer that they were at risk of me finding an alternative job. Some companies I left, were filing for bankruptcy within a year or two. They NEVER said "don't let the door hit you, where the Good Lord split you". Even back in my early 20s, I was seeing CNC and other automation show up in the places I worked in, and saw the handwriting on the wall (40 years ago). To have any security in the workforce, you need to have skills which are nearly impossible to replace.
If there are a hundred people (or more) in your state, which can adequately perform your job, you have no job security.
There is no question that LONG ago, companies would use violence to enforce their will upon workers... that day is long past. Still, in that time frame unions did make important strides. Once those changes were codified by actual law, the value of the unions was diminished. The remaining area where I believe Unions are quite good is simple; they remained one of the last bastions which assured their workers have a viable retirement, as versus a 401K program they *may* donate to. Even so, I have watched most major unions "sell-out" new member's retirement programs, so that the more senior members of the Union can retain their more luxurious retirement packages. The Unions it seems, are in the process of Consuming their Young.

I will tell you, I worked in a mine for decades. We were Steelworkers as were the police, store clerks and any other job that was union.
Most states in the west if its union it is not of the industries but one who needs more money for their own retirements and people.
They did sh** for us other than to take our money and send it to Pittsburg to pay the real Steelworkers retirement pay.
We had a contract that needed to be voted on, rep said best we'd get, It involved selling our retirement for a settlement but neither union or company would give a formula for what one would be getting, F'D us big time. Union Rep. said to bad nothing can be done,
some with 30 years service were lucky to get 100K for their work in that hole.
Song says company gets the gold, workers get the shaft could never be more true.
Just saying the unions aren't all the be all in this world.
They voted for what they got and like the Rep. said to us NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT, eat sh** and go home

Unions were necessary in our history to protect the workers I think anybody would agree with that looking at our industrial history. Unions are like a sub government which you are taxed with union dues and your benefits. Unions have the same corruption problem that our government has because of the money. John Kerry stated largest job growth is a solar panel technician which make $20-$30 per hour, my general union laborers rate is currently $81.00/HR . If they force Unions into the solar panel business then no one will be able to afford them once they adjust the current labor rate to the union rate.
What geographical location is this where general union laborers rate is $81.00/HR. and in what Trade?
