It may be a little light for a 168 but this load is sure accurate in my 5-R. I've gone as high as 45.5gr of Varget with a Nosler Custom Comp 168 gr but accuracy seems to suffer.

Since I shoot only "Magazine Length" cartridges and don't shoot 168's beyond 600 yards I can make do with this "slow load". For longer range I go with a 175 gr with as much as 44.5 gr of Varget.

Pick up some RE15 and shoot those AMAXs like this @200yds. Varget wont shoot in my SPSS.

Re: Varget load 168gr A-MAX

In a 20" barrel 44gr of varget behind a 168gr bullet may be close to the 2500fps range(I am guessing based on posted recipe's with velocity). FGMM and BHM est. 2650fps., those factory loads group less than .5 moa in my rifle. Would the 150fps affect the accuracy negatively?

Re: Varget load 168gr A-MAX

I shoot 44.7 gr. varget, in my 5R, with a 168. I consider it my Hot load, and it's accurate. Always "work up", and look for signs of over pressure. My COL, on those, is 2.96. I load em 1 at a time. That's 1 thousands off my lands.

Re: Varget load 168gr A-MAX

44gr Varget, 168 Amax, CCI 200, Hor, Rem, or Nos brass, 5 shots 1/2MOA or better from my SPS-V to 320yds. Furthest I've messed with measuring groups. FGMM primer slightly less impressive still sub MOA more vertical dispertion. WLR and CCI 250 primers right around MOA. Your results, of course, may vary.

Re: Varget load 168gr A-MAX

45varget in win brass and 44 in LC both at 2.8" were what I found for 168amax.

Velocity for 43 varget, LC brass and a 175 SMK out of my 16" is 2450 and around 2530? in my 20" LTR. I would guess that a 168 with 44gr varget inthat brass would be 2550-2600 in a 20".

Bug holes,

44.5 varget win brass win primer 20" sps REM tactical in a McMillan stock sure fire muzzle break 2,600 fps. Dead nuts on w my Leupold m3 elevation turret. Very simple and its reliable out to 600.

Re: Varget load 168gr A-MAX

43.5 Grains Varget works for me. I found this load by loading 3 rounds from min to max at 1 grain intervals. tested these to see which grouped best at 100 yards. Took the best 2 groups and loaded shells between these 2 until I found the tightest groups.Every rifle has a favorite load.

You should find a node around 44-44.5 and another at or near 46.

Just back from range testing this very combo at 300 yards in my 308 tactical.

Group #1 (top left) shot at 300 yards prone, bipod and sand sock = .35 moa with my 308 tactical today. The load was 45.8 varget in winchester brass and primer loaded to 2.825" OAL. top right was 46g @ 2.825, lower left 45.8 @ 2.815" and a poorly executed Group lower right 46g @ 2.815" may last two were called low right and high left so it may be worth another look but I am liking that first group

Crono'd today 45.8 @ 2.825 = 2674 adv. for 6

I shot about 30 rounds yesterday using almost that same load in Lapua brass. Only .2 gr more at 43.7 My rifle didn't just like it, it loved it.

When I paid attention to the wind, I could get all 5 in one hole at 100 yards and a quarter sized group at 300 yards. Damn wind yesterday was "hurricane strength" at tree top level and almost dead calm at ground level for a few seconds out of every minute. I just waited for all the pieces of surveyor tape I put everywhere to just drop and then fired.

FWIW, I find a second "node" up at 45.5 gr of Varget I get more muzzle flash though so I'll stick with the lower charge. Still is supersonic according JBM ballistics calculator at 1,000 yards so it fits my needs.

I'm really beginning to like that bullet. Shoots better in my rifle than the 168SMK.

Re: Varget load 168gr A-MAX

have you tried 175 smk's? u won't b able to push them as fast... just curious.

when i was using the 168 amax's my load was 44.4gn of varget in lc lr brass with a coal 2.825 (not from ogive)

this was in a 21" remy 700, it shot great out to 800 but past that it was spotty
