Hunting & Fishing WA Coyote Hunters

I am looking for some suggestions on terrain features and elevation to look for in a coyote spot. Western WA pretty much consists of steep mountains with a lot of dirt roads and heavy vegetation. Eastern WA is much more spread out, but after the cascade/Yakima area public hunting land is very limited (heavily privately owned farmland).

I don't have thermal or NV, so it would be sunrise to sunset hunting. Is there a typical elevation area that they avoid? Mountains vary from 1500' to 6400' and mostly steep elevation gain.

I hunt primarily open sage at between 800 and 3000 feet. Don't worry , they are every where. The flatter and, you think, less likely to be there , the more they are there. Just get out and do it.

Look in dirt roads, in snow and near wet areas for tracks. They also like to leave scat on roads and trails. Look for prey. Check scat to determine what they are eating. Rabbits, deer, grasshoppers etc. Listen for dusk howling. Not sure focusing on elevation has much to do with it.

How much time do you spend at each spot? Based on what I read, if nothing shows up within 30mins you’re better off going somewhere else.

Being mostly in open country where they might be coming from far out, I give them a little longer. [30-45 min.] I've killed several right at 45 min. If it's windy, I generally pick up and move sooner because they can't hear you as far. However !!! Never under estimate their hearing or sense of smell. There is a saying that you can fool their eyes [decoy] and their ears [caller] but NEVER their nose. I killed one after watching him come for over a mile. Make sure your set up is right and don't move very much. Go do it !

I only have a manual rabbit call not a electronic call. I’d like to think I am decent with it, but would I be better off just not using it?

Depends. I like to sit and watch a good area for quite some time then call a bit. Sit 10-15 min then move on.

If cattle are around the coyotes are. If deer and elk are around the coyotes are. The coyotes get really spooky on the crowded areas of public land. You can find them on public land. Just get away from people .
