Washington state monthly matches at Upper Nisqually Sportsman's Club

I'm sure they recognize by now that we are a net benefit to the club and conduct ourselves in a very professional manner. I'll keep my fingers crossed that they will allow us to introduce movers.

I don't see any safety issues with us shooting movers attached to a long 1X2 pole. I have done exactly that at a number of other matches, and it always went off without a hitch. There are some minor things that need to be done to insure the mover goes the same speed for everyone, but that is easy to set up. It really isn't different than having people score targets from down in the target pits. The person holding the mover just stays on the same walkway that the target scorer's walk on to score targets. We will discuss it again with the board after they finish up some of their first of the year meetings, and all the attendant issues.

Excellent. While we don't get much wind practice on the west side at least we'll get some practice with movers.

I am curious - How do you get different target holders to walk at the same (or close to the same) speed?

I would guess by is using a set pace count per second... would we be using cardboard targets for the movers? I have done what Unknown is talking about before and it is fun. Study up your math skills :)

You could also do 2 movers in the pits going opposite directions with different colored cardboard to keep the same duel COF going.
Add markers at the start on each side and in the middle as no shoot area's while the walkers are getting up to pace and crossing over in the center.

Surveyors paint spots at 3' intervals and make sure the walkers count 1 second a step will ensure a 3 mph walk speed.

Perfect. Simple and straight forward.

To make the mover consistent is really simple. You put marks on the walkway about 30" apart, then used a sort of metronome device to pace out the steps. It is an extremely simple way to give everyone the same speed mover. Cardboard type IPSC/IDPA targets stapled onto a 16' 1X2 works perfectly. No shoots, can be placed at the end of the run to insure that shooters cease shooting when the run, or the person with the mover simply drops the mover below the berm after the run finishes.

An interesting twist that keeps people aware of the "Be sure of your target and what is beyond" is tp place steel at various places during the run. If the shooter isn't paying enough attention, they can waste a round on the steel. If you only get 5 rounds per run, a shot wasted on the steel can cost 20% of your score (ouch).

During our regularly scheduled match on March 01,2014, many (if not most) of our regular shooters will be attending a different match in Eastern Washington.

We thought this would allow us the opportunity to allow new shooters, and those people who have had passing interest in our practical rifle program to try out the props, shoot steel at various distances, and familiarize themselves with the program without the pressure of jumping into a match for their first exposure.

So, on March 1, 2014 we will begin an orientation/familiarization program at 08:30. This program will include safety issues, rules, scoring, and most importantly, shooting steel at various distance using our various props. We would like to have 5-6 shooters who have shot in at least 3 matches to assist the newcomers. Everyone, including the experienced shooters will get to take lots of turns on the various props. Experienced shooters can use this session to coach, and to practice.

By allowing the more experienced shooters to shoot from the props, the newcomers will be able to see different techniques and gear in use.

Range fees will be $15 for non-members of Upper Nisqually Sportsman's Club, and $10 for members.

Please remember:

1. Check all your bullets with a magnet as no bullets witn any ferrous content will be allowed.

2. The maximum power level for all cartridges is rounds similar to 30-06, and 8mm Mauser. NO MAGNUMS.

3. Eye and ear protection is required.

If you are interested in attending as a participant, or coach, please send a return email back letting us know you will be there.

Great idea for the March UNSC match. Great way for new people to get a feeling for this sport without the pressure of a match behind it.
Also a good opportunity for the regulars to get some easy going practice time on the barricades.

We just got news that we are going to again have access to the 100 yard range in addition to the 550 yard range for the matches at UNSC. That means we can take in more shooters, and have more courses of fire. Kevin and I have been discussing the match format for April, but haven't finalized it yet.

Let's just say it'll be awesome.

In other news that isn't nearly as neat as getting back onto the 100 yard range, the club is also getting us a spot indoors to store our targets and some gear. Not having to haul targets and gear back and forth each time will be really great.

Scheduled start time is 08:30 AM. Please check your email and make sure you are on the mailing list though. I'm the guy running the course on 01 March, and unless I can kick the junk I caught earlier this week, I will need to cancel. I'll be sending out an email tomorrow morning if I haven't improved enough to run things. Mainly, I think it would just be inconsiderate as hell to pass along the lung junk I caught to everyone else.

If it's anything like what I had 2 weeks ago, take some time. That shit knocked me on my ass for a solid 10 days.

I have to cancel the practical rifle event scheduled for 01 March 2014 at Upper Nisqually Sportsman's Club. I had hoped I would kick this bug in time to be there, but it just isn't happening, and I know no one wants what I have.

Kevin and I have been discussing rescheduling to the May 3 match date when we will have access to both the 550 and 100 yard ranges. This means we would have the ability to do much more shooting than we could do with only one range.

When we finalize the reschedule date, another email will be coming out.

If you know anyone that was planning on coming to the March 1 event, please make sure they know it has been cancelled.

Regrets,
Anton

Sorry to hear that Anton. I hope you get better soon, and I'll see you at next month's event. This year's flu season has been especially nasty; hearing lots of folks who've been laid up.

Practical Rifle @ UNSC

We again have use of the 100 yard range for the short range portion of our matches. Therefore, we are increasing our attendance to 30 shooters for the April 5, 2014 match.

The reservation list for the 05 April 2014 match is now open. Kevin will keep track of the list, and post it online on Snipershide.com, so you can look there to insure your name got posted to the list. Kevin's email is [email protected].

The familiarization/orientation that was scheduled for 01 March, and got cancelled due to my illness, has been rescheduled to 03 May 2013. As we now have access to both the 550 and 100 yard ranges, we will also hold an abbreviated match (15 shooters for the match, and 15 shooters for the familiarization/orientation) on the same day.

We will split up the match shooters, and the shooters for the familiarization/orientation onto different ranges. Then, at the half way point, both groups will swap ranges. This way, both groups get to shoot both distant and close targets, and we expect to be able to do more shooting.

We won't open the list for the May match until the April 2014 Match is completed. However, I will be happy to begin keeping track of anyone interested in attending the familiarization/orientation. Rescheduling the familiarization/orientation is a very high priority for us, and having access to both ranges will allow us to present an even better program to those people interested in attending.

The match format for April will be posted after Kevin and I finalize it, but we anticipate it to follow the format of the February match. Be prepared for a cold bore shot, a dot drill and some position shooting though.

ATTENTION ALL:

Kevin has the list up and running. You can email Kevin to get a spot on the list, but he probably won't be updating the list until after he gets home from work in the evenings. Don't be impatient, he will eventually get you on the list... He has never let me down yet.

Here is the tentative course of fire for next months UNSC match:

100 YARD RANGE STAGES
Upright barricade: 2 points per hit
6 rounds - 60 seconds
On each side of the barricade there will be one 8" round and one 10" round. Shooter must
remain standing with their feet on, or inside the fault lines. Start position will be low ready
with no more than 5 rounds loaded into the rifle. After the start signal, shooter will fire one
round on each target from one side, and then switch to the other side and repeat. After this, the
shooter will return to the beginning side and fire one round on the 10" plate, and then do the
same on the 10" plate on the other side.

Circles (circles from mytargets.com):
5 rounds – 40 seconds
There are 5 circles on a piece of paper. The center most circle is 3/8 inch in diameter, then there is a 1" diameter black circle, then a 2" and 3" diameter white circle. Shooter will begin standing behind a rifle with an empty chamber. After the start signal, shooter will go prone and fire one round at each circle in 40 seconds.
The red dot=3 points
The black dot=2 points
The INNER white circle=1 point
No value for the outer white circle

Dot drill (mytargets.com)
8 rounds – 60 seconds
Each sheet for the shooter will have eight black half inch dots. Shooter will begin prone, and WILL NOT LOOK THROUGH THEIR SCOPE UNTIL THE START SIGNAL. (Looking through a scope before the start is a 5 point penalty) After the start signal, shooter will fire 1 round at each black
dot.
Black dot = 3 points
Inside square = 1 point (only one point per square)

In the box: 2 points per hit
6 rounds – 30 seconds
One 5.5X8.5 inch rectangle, one 6" square, one 12" round
Shooter will begin seated with rifle in their lap, empty chamber. Only allowed support will
be sling, and shooter...no pillows, tripods, bipods, or any other type of support. After the
start signal, shooter will fire one round at each target, and repeat.

550 YARD RANGE STAGES
Positional: 2 points per hit
10 rounds – 2 minutes
Shooters start standing with up to 10 rounds loaded. Upon the signal shooters will engage both 100 yard targets with 1 round each while standing. Shooters will then transition to kneeling and engage both 200 yard targets with 1 round each. Shooters will then transition to seated position and engage both 200 yard targets with 1 round each. Shooter will then go prone and engage the 275 yard and 350 yard targets with 1 round each. Only equipment that may be used is rifle sling and bipod. No rear bags, shooter bags, pillows, sleeping bags or backpacks.

Barricade: 2 points per hit
10 rounds – 2 minutes
Shooters will start standing behind the barricade with up to 10 rounds loaded. Upon the signal the shooter will use the enclosed ports in the barricade with only 2 shots from each port. Shooters will engage the 432 yard target and then 500 yard target with 1 round at each from any port and then must move to an unused port.

Rooftop: 2 points per hit
6 rounds – 90 seconds
Shooters will start on the rooftop with up to 6 rounds loaded. Upon the signal shooters will engage the 350 yard and 530 left-hand targets, alternating shots between the two targets.

The shooter may quit at any time they chose.
