The key to it is all about being yourself and not 'thinking' about it. If you focus on it too much you will come off as awkward.
I've had other male coworkers that were super shy and I was able to convince them that there is someone for everybody out there. Breaking the ice is the trickiest part but you have to take it easy and be yourself. Just like conversing with a barista or cashier. Don't fucking force it, or you will look like you are straining to pop a huge turd out.

The difference between the hippy movement and the ANTIFAs is that the hippie's were lying when they said they wanted to change things peacefully. The ANTIFAs have not been shy about courting violent means to change society and government.
So this is not necessarily a message to mitigate the OP's concerns but to highlight the fact that things don't change. That doesn't mean we should not be concerned but cognizant and to act accordingly.
