i've been at the gym steady 4 day workouts as outlined in a previous post and noticed this week that my total weight volume has decreased and my bodyweight has increased 5 lbs. the only difference to my diet has been the addition of a single protien shake immediately after my workouts. it's a 12 oz 1% milk with 1.5 scoops of EAS powder (100% whey)

tonight was dismal. it was leg night and i'm just disgusted at my efforts but i just totally ran out of steam. lots of burn, but NOTHING compared to the 2 weeks before. just venting i guess...i doubt there's many of you on here that can even remember your third week back to the gym after oh...say...FOREVER? carry on. /rant

Re: week 3 observations/questions

Hey mate I know what you are talking about , what are your stats

hight weight and body fat if known roughly .

do you know how many cal's you are consuming every day ?

don't worry about body weight when you first step into the gym I suggest you take a pic of your self once a week and keep doing that you will be able to see the difference that you won't see in the mirror as you see it every day

the most important thing is just keep going to the gym

Re: week 3 observations/questions

6', 235-240, and until i added the afterworkout protein shake I was at 1500 to 1600 cals a day - added the shake and put another 300 cals and 40grams of protein roughly. keep in mind, i had my guts sliced and dropped nearly 200 lbs from 2 years ago...i'm rebounding from the surgery and trying to regain some of the muscle that atrophied after surgery. the first few months after gastric bypass, your body literally eats itself to survive, and you not only eat up nearly all the fat, but you crush alot of muscle too, especially if you are not in the gym all the time. I was one of those gastric bypass patients who did not go to the gym much, and just literally melted away.

Re: week 3 observations/questions

Hey Jason you need to eat more man , I am not to sure on how you having you surgery affects you eating .

I am 5'9 163lb and cutting right now I am running on about 2000cal's a day

Try and get at least 1.5g of protein per lb of lean body mass you also need fat in your diet , people say you don't need carbs and that is pretty true you can get by on very low carb's but I need some carbs or I get moody and snap at people .

Re: week 3 observations/questions

Just hang in there. The gym can be an unforgiving place. I have always faced periods where I would walk in the gym only to find my lifts were down dramatically. The low numbers stick around for up to 2 weeks, but as long as I stay dedicated, the day where I walk in and set new personal records comes. My lifting has always come in cycles of 3 steps forward, 1 step back.

+1 on the pictures. The number on the scale is only there to taunt you. Take pictures every week. A few months from now, you will be shocked at the difference.

Re: week 3 observations/questions

You are over training and under eating .

You are failing during your training because your body is resisting , it doesn't want to let you abuse it anymore because it knows you are not gonna fuel it.

I would take a few days off from the gym and spend a day refueling your body , it is hard for you to eat as much food especially protein because you have to eat little bits at a time.
SO
Stick to calorie dense foods , more healthy dietary fats from whole eggs , fatty fish like salmon and so on . When you eat your yogurt and oatmeal add a tablespoon of almond butter or peanutbutter , a few tablespoons of peanutbutter throughout the day will add a significant amount of calories

And for the love of god do not dispose of your egg yolks!! Whole eggs are the perfect anabolic food

Re: week 3 observations/questions

noted re: yolks. i'm really trying to increase intake...it's tough. going to see the dietician this week too just to discuss this very subject. hoping to walk out of there with a good meal plan. The surgeons office got in some new protiens too, gonna grab some samples and see which ones stay down and don't make me dump. Dumping syndrome sucks ass.

on a side note, I did add another egg and some peanut butter to the start of the day, and added a tbls of creamy low sugar peanut butter or almond butter to my shake. tough to get it blended, but i'm getting it in. increased another 200 or so cals a day this week.

Re: week 3 observations/questions

I'll agree on the under eating, I've felt like shit during a lift, realized that my caloric consumption was way under what it needed to be. I'm 5'8 195 and try to intake at least 3,000 on my hard days.

I eat like a friggen horse for 3 days after my injection. then back to normal. I'm still having a hard time choking down more than 1800 a day. I'm hesitant to go to all shakes just to get this shit to run through my port.

Re: week 3 observations/questions

1800 cal a day is not enough for maintenance for you , you need to be up around 3000 cal's a day .

I don't know what your bf% is but 1800 is not enough man you need to eat if you need to add a few protein shake's to up you cal intake do it you aren't getting enough cal's , you are not even eating enough for someone who dose not train and sit's at home all day you are staving your self .

find way's to get more cal's when I come up short on cal I just mix some protein powder with water and have that , but you are running under buy about 1000 cal's .

I know it is hard to make your self eat but you need to , good job on getting up t 1800 but you still need more .

just make sure you eat good clean food .

Re: week 3 observations/questions

Fat!!!

Fat has 9 calories per gram , add a tablespoon of police oil or macadamia nut oil to your shakes

Mix up two scoops of protein in just enough water to make it like cake batter then add two tablespoons of peanut butter , this makes a very small amount of food that is very calorie dense

Over eating or trying to down big shakes with only cause dumping syndrome and you know what fun that is.

Remember what I said about trying to fill a small glass from a 5 gallon bucket , slow and steadily trickle it in , to much at once and you make a mess

I totaly understand , my wife had gotten the lap band and we know several people for my sons school that have had both the sleeve and bypass.
We are constantly trying to help them with finding good things they can eat all are women and all have issues with hair loss due to poor nutrient absorption

Re: week 3 observations/questions

i luckily dodged the hairloss bullet. tried some pudding this AM...one scoop of vanilla protein, 1/2 cup fage, a little apple butter and a tbls peanut butter...tolerable, and a welcome addition to the menu. will try adding a bit more protein on the next batch and see just how thick it gets...

Re: week 3 observations/questions

been a while since I logged in. body weight has dropped avg 4 lbs consistently over a week of measuring, and my quantity of lifted weight (mass x reps = total weight) has increased dramatically. this week, i did alot more focus on core, and a bunch of calisthenics and high reps...last week i went to absolute failure on every muscle group i could hit on one day or another and this week i feel great. i'm maintaining 1800cals a day intake, and muscle tone in pics is becoming defined.

I still have enough extra skin to make a shar pei take notice and am a little too vain to drop pics on the web, but lets just say that *I* noticed the difference, and so does my wife
