Rifle Scopes Where does a fixed 6x fit in?

With the SWFA package going on I'm wondering exactly what niche a fixed power 6x fills. It seems like too much power for the high speed crowd to fill the role of something like an acog for ARs. On the flip side I would think that bench shooters would opt for higher power in a similar form factor.

The only thing that really makes sense to me is use for a dedicated subsonic bolt action or people that shoot in competitions with a magnification restriction. Maybe 22 trainers?

I am aware of the successful use of 6x scopes historically but I'm curious what they're being used for today.

Not that too many people here own or use one but a lot of people use fixed 4x and 6x for slug shotguns and muzzle loaders. Some have said they'd use it on their 22's.

If you are worried about being able to sell it since you must have signed up for the Black Friday sale (why else would you start this thread) then look in the Black Friday SWFA thread. There have been people posting that they'll buy peoples 6x's for $150 to $200

I've got a fixed 6x IOR with the MP8 reticle. For the time being it is going on a spare rifle. Eventualy it may find it's way to a whisper of some type or another. I have used scopes in this neighborhood in the past on a walking varmint rifle, and was able to make consistent hits on PD's out to the 600 yard neighborhood.

I was just curious who SWFA was marketing something like this to. They obviously think someone needs something like this or they wouldn't manufacture it. I was thinking of picking one up on the cheap for an eventual 300blk bolt gun or maybe for my 10/22.

Re: Where does a fixed 6x fit in?

I want one to move back and forth between my 22lr and my muzzle loader. 10x is too much mag for hunting so the 6x is about perfect.

And im looking for one if you guys buy one in the package and want to unload it.

Good luck,
Merritt

Looks like you might want one... and you'll get it cheap. I'm not sure who normally buys them but people have come out of the woodwork to pick them up for half price. Good for somebody I guess. Maybe it will fill "your niche"

Re: Where does a fixed 6x fit in?

Really its not that appropriate for a .22LR since it does not have adjustable parallax. With a .22 you really want a parallax correction of 50 yards which is why dedicated rimfire scopes are made and sold.

Re: Where does a fixed 6x fit in?

I think you've already got it figured out with subsonic and .22 use. If I got one that's exactly what I'd be using it for.

A friend has one of the 6x SS scopes and it has something like 160 MOA of elevation (I didn't verify reticle movement through that range, but the knob moved that far). It would be a very good choice for use with cartridges that just drop out of the sky.

Re: Where does a fixed 6x fit in?

Some folks like "simple" and avoid variables for a variety of reasons.

Over the many years of hunting in SC, VA, WV and PA for deer, bear, turkey, etc, I have opted for a straight six power on several of my rifles. In my mind, if I am using a straight power scope, the 6X is the best all around for my situation. Not the best at anything but really good for general purpose use out to reasonable distances (500-600 yards) for what I'm shooting for.

I own several high end variables too but they are for more specialized applications.

Nothing wrong with a straight six if it scratches your itch.

Re: Where does a fixed 6x fit in?

I used 6x fixed at Urban Precision rifle at Thunder Ranch (308 cal AR). I also use 6x on a 375 Ruger and a CZ 452.

It is an excellent general purpose optic for 10 yard to 400.

I swapped the optic on the 375 for a (also a good general purpose optic).

Just the opposite I bought the 6-20 for the whisper and not sure where to put the 6x. Maybe I'm crazy but that 10 mils of vertical hold over in 1/2 mil increments looks like the ticket for a whisper out to 300 yards without dialing.

Re: Where does a fixed 6x fit in?

I own the 6x42 version of the Super Sniper and rather like the scope. 6x is enough magnification for most shooting I do (unless I am strictly shooting for groups) and large exit pupil of this scope makes it pretty easy to get behind. The same large exit pupil makes it very good in low light and helps with spotting your own shots. Lately I have been using it for several projects where the mounts are not as nicely aligned as I would like (I often tinker with old-ish guns) and the large adjustment range of the scope helps there.
