It seems like a lot of people are parting with their vortex scopes lately, a lot of brand new ones for several hundreds of dollars under retail. Why the fire sale? I'm still waiting for my new one to be shipped.

Its the time of year! With all new gadgets coming out people are prepping their orders. I would also wager that there is quite a few more Razors in peoples hands compared to some of the competitors.
Still an unbelievable value, I've had 2 4.5-27s, I was on elf the lucky ones who got a brand new one for around 1900. My ford one was on elf the first to hit the streets and paid the full retail.

I just received my new AMG a week ago so some of us are still buying them. Take advantage of this time while all the new shiny stuff is coming out.
New reticle sand people want the latest and greatest. No other reason then that. It then all up for 1400-1500 and save money.

Its the ebb and flow of things. If you watch long enough you'll notice the same will hold true for another manufacturer sooner or later.
You won't find many allies in the Leupold camp here on this forum. They may not be a new player but old players are often irrelevant.

I think it's mainly that the ERB-7C & HOURS reticles were announced and the MSRP dropped $600... so a few hundo street price.
People are selling the "old" one and hoping to pick up a "new" one. I like the ERB-7B in the AMG a lot and there are a few minor changes that make the -7C worth while.
I saw some amazing deals lately and would not hesitate to go get one.

Vortex AMG's glass is US made I believe. Vortex like em or hate em they have driven change in the industry.
I ran a vortex razor for a bit. Good glass for the money, like others have said there are a ton out there. So obviously more on the used market.
I’d disagree about them being overpriced. Have you seen the msrp’s on kahles and NF? That’s a lot of loot. I love my ATACR, but I have an older NXS that I may swap out for an AMG or razor

There are a lot of reason out there to like Vortex... VIP Warranty, Value, Innovation & Listening to shooters.
I have both a Bushy Elite XRS and Vortex Razor... the razor is better in every way to me: Better reticle, Better Zero Stop, Better clicks, Better Glass, Better Eyebox, and Better Warranty. I know bushy changed their policy lately to try to keep up with vortex.
The XRS had very bad CA which made milling white targets on dark background very difficult. It got dark at the top end and the eye box was very unforgiving, there was no illuminations or warranty on mine. The turrets were way tall and marks didn't line up.
About the only thing I like was the colour but the weird brown has grown on me over the years.

Not going to pretend to know the costs of raw components in building quality scopes, but mechanics/design matter in regards to repeatability. as well as tolerances. Let’s not pretend that there aren’t companies that have issues in these areas. It’s not as simple as the costs of raw materials.
Vortex stands behind their products, design, and mechanics with one of the better warranties out there, especially warranties on scopes that are in a 2nd or 3rd owners hands.

I'm happy with (and keeping) my Vortex Viper HST.
Perhaps the reason you see a lot of them on the secondary market is the same reason you see a lot of Glocks on the secondary market. There are simply a lot of them out there. But, it's not because Glocks aren't good or popular.

I love Vortex and have bought a lot of their stuff. That said my new Athlon is better and cheaper for what I do...To get the reticle I want and magnification I want out of Vortex I gotta spend $1400. I get 80% of that for $400 or $1000 less than a similar Vortex scope.
It's not easy sorting thru all the options. I love Vortex but there are some viable options at less money.

Well, they say to be an expert you need to have spent 10k hours practicing that particular endeavor.
I would bet I’ve spent well more time than that with my craft. But still don’t consider myself an expert. Always more to learn.

If all you want is a 3-9 with a simple duplex reticle, then sure... Leupold has some decent options. However, if you're wanting first focal plane, a Christmas tree reticle of some sort, illumination, tactical-style controls, and, I dunno, actual mechanically accurate tracking, Leupold is one of the most overpriced manufacturers in the market. They've been living off of their reputation for YEARS. As I understand it, they've finally woken up a bit and are going to start offering some competitive product for this segment of the market, but they've got a LOT of catching up to do... which is damned sad, considering that it didn't have to be this way.

I'm a new guy here also, just trying to learn a whole bunch as quickly as possible. Just starting out, pulled up this thread to see how big of a mistake I made just buying a Vortex PST Gen 2 3-15x44 FFP to put on my 6.5.
Haven't had a chance to compare it to any other scopes as of yet, but so far so good. It is better than my Gen 1 FFP Vortex scopes so far.

I know I'm late getting back to this troll job of his but until I read his Leopold challenge I was sold this was phillips back, but trying to sell us Chinese schott glass for the next gen IOR models.
TACC, you didn't make a mistake. The vortex PST gen 2s are good and if its what you can afford and works I can't see why you'd have any regrets. Don't look back but enjoy.
