Rifle Scopes Zero Compromise Optic update

I broke down and got on @CSTactical 's list for a ZCO 527 MPCT2

What are the scope ring torque settings recommend for the zco?

I have the spuhr mount and the manual recommends between 15 -25 I believe it’s inch pounds? But it says to defer to scope manufacturer recommendation .....

I would use it. Degrease thoroughly at the very least. The ZCO is a heavy scope and I had mine slip in a Spuhr the first time I mounted it.

I've never used such a thing on scope rings. I'm intrigued if it actually works or is necessary. I understand the theory of it. I've used locktite retaining splooge on R700 Actions for the scope rail to the actual action. Helps as a "fake recoil lug' also helps to make a "gasket" when using steel rails.

I'm suprised that you had issues with spuhr mounts. I've had my NF on my TRG-42 for a long time with 0 slippage, but then again it is a lighter scope with 6 scew design holding it in place....

What is the best degreaser that won’t discolor the spuhr mount?

I just used isopropyl alcohol. It worked well.

It was probably operator error. I took it apart and tried again and I haven't had a problem since.

I just followed the ZCO instructions that defer to the mount manufacturer....Spuhr,,,,,and had no slip or problem...

And Spuhr recommends the rosin

Isopropyl works great. I also agree regarding use of rosin, it's cheap, easy to find (any store selling sports equipment will have it, Academy or even a Wal-Mart), and easy to use. Helps with grip and also protects the finish. There's really no downside. You don't need it, but why not?

I agree with @MTETM about click spacing and mils per turn. My old (45-yo) eyes hate the tiny bit of space between clicks. I almost always have to count...and I have to wear bifocal safety glasses in order to read my turrets.
Never much go past 8-mils on my guns anymore.WWith all these newfangled second-turn indicators found on optics anymore, you'd think 10-mils would suffice.

It's not just a ZCO thing either. Bring back the 5-mil per turn Vortex Razor! ? <\rant>

Solution!

How many Mils are you guys getting with just 20 MOA mounts, or are you guys going 20 MOA rail/20moa mount to get 40 MOA?

I run 45 MOA in my .338 and I gets me full 20 Mils on my optic, figuring why not go for broke to get most of that 36mm tube.

After zeroing my ZCO420 at 100yards with a 20 MOA rail and a Spuhr SP 6001 mount I had 21 mils of elevation left.

Hey guys I just received my 5-25 mpact2 and would like flip up covers. Please don't throw things as its probably been beat to death. I went to tenebraex site and ZCO wasn't listed. Anyone else make good covers???

You can figure out how many mils you should get from most scopes by finding out the total elevation of the scope, divide that in half and then add about 3 mils per 10 MOA of cant (it's actually 2.96, but 3 will get you in the ballpark).

Therefore, if you have a scope with 28 mils of travel, divide that in half and you have 14 mils, put on a 20 MOA canted base and you'll now have about 20 mils of total elevation available to you, use a 20 MOA mount on a 20 MOA base and you have a total of about 12 mils of additional travel which would yield about 26 mils of elevation you can dial, but if you dial the full 26 mils you are at the extreme limit of the scope which some have noticed some optical distortion. However, ZCO claims to have resolved that issue with their 36mm tube and optical design, they are supposed to have some of the best optical performance while at the extreme end of the elevation. ZCO also offers 35 mils of total elevation, so given the above formula you divide 35/2 = 17.5 and then add 3mils for every 10 MOA of cant until you get to the limit of the scope which for the ZCO would be almost 60 MOA of cant.

We have the Tenebraex caps back in stock, I'm working on filling the back orders right now and should have some left over :)

On the scope elevation, I've got a 6mil (~20MOA) Spuhr mount + the Impact 737r which has 20MOA. I have no problem with the 100yd zero, and have elevation to spare even out to a mile. I'd definitely go this way in the future - I don't see any downside as the optical clarity doesn't seem to degrade any noticeable amount to my eyes at 100yds. ZCO definitely seemed to nail this aspect.

Aadmount caps for sure. There's photos on my 527 in my post history if you want to pull them up.

@MarkLeupold What kind of add on grip are those in your rifle? I have a Tikka and something like that might work? Thks

So, the base stock is a B&C M40. I drilled some (3) holes in the grip and epoxied in some threaded inserts. I then made the grip out of "oven-bake clay" and formed it how I liked it. Cook it according to directions and it's kinda like a polymer when it comes out. Bolt it on and rock and roll.

I get a lot of questions about it. Kinda unique.
