RIA TM22 rimfire accuracy for us poors

This may not only be the cheapest semi-auto 22LR currently available nationally, but it may be the most accurate semi-auto 22LR under $500? Rock Island Armory (RIA) is best known for producing Philippine made budget priced, reliably built, pistols and revolvers. I’ve heard they produce the most 1911 pistols in the world. Recently they’ve been expanding into shotguns and now the rifles. RIA lent me their TM22 to test out.

The TM22 is 22LR, semi-automatic, blowback rifle is a proprietary design produced by Derya of Turkey. It follows the general shape of an AR pattern rifle. It is compatible with AR-type grips and stocks. The receiver is made of 7075 aircraft grade aluminum. It has an MLok compatible AR handguard and is topped with a receiver length Picatinny rail.

At the rear of the receiver is a castle nut which accepts MilSpec AR buffer tubes. The model I was sent uses a non-standard fixed metal stock affixed to a fluted tube. The TM22’s action is direct blowback with a recoil spring entirely contained in the receiver. It comes in either a 20″ or 18″ barrel that is free floated in an M-Lok handguard which looks similar to an AR but which has a locking bolt on top, which connects it to the upper receiver. Some models are available with more M16A2 style furniture like an A2-esque carry handle, 2-piece round handguard, and A-frame front sight.

The TM22 comes with a pair of 10-round polymer magazines which look similar to CZ-455/457 magazines but are unfortunately proprietary.
The TM22 has a last round hold open which is also its functional bolt hold open. The bolt only stays open with an empty magazine inserted. The rifle has a left side charging handle but no bolt catch other than keeping an empty mag in the magwell. Once the mag is removed, the bolt slides closed. The rifle includes a uniquely designed chamber flag that allows the bolt to be dropped on it after pulling the bolt, to permit function checks and dry firing the trigger.

The trigger is flat faced with a light trigger pull of about 2.5lbs. In live fire testing, we found the rifle easy to shoot and surprisingly accurate. Our testing as conducted at 25yrds and 50yrds proved it shoots 1.5-2inch sized groups at 50yrds with inexpensive Armscor 22LR ammo. We had about a dozen stove pipes and FTF malfunctions were due to the ammo.

My 457 WMR Reborn

When I purchased my 457 about 3 years ago I was shocked by what I knew was hiding beneath the thick, heavy slathering of that dark brown mud CZ just loves to coat their factory wood stocks with. I immediately wanted to remove it to see how beautiful the wood really was. But, having not ever fully stripped a rifle stock before and not positively knowing what type of finish it was I didnt want to make a mess of it so I just left it alone. Every time I took it out to shoot though I always had the deep desire to make it look nicer.
Now Im not unfamiliar with woodworking or applying a finish, Im a wooden shipwright by trade and also make some very nice furniture and have messed around with wood and woodworking pretty much since childhood.
Finally I just decided to jump in and do it, this is the result.

Accessories Grayboe Ridgeback R700 SA w/Bottom metal and arca

Selling a new, unused, Grayboe Ridgeback stock with R700 SA inlet. It’s in their Bergara web finish. Includes Grayboe M5 bottom metal and a new, still packaged, Sawtooth rifles full length arca rail.

I bought this to put together an NRL hunter rig, but decided to just go with a Seekins PH3. The stock has never had a receiver mounted in it. There is a small chip in the finish in the inside of the barrel channel, which was there when I unboxed it. I suspect you wouldn't be able to see once a barreled action is mounted in it.

PRS owner is about growing the sport, no matter what you might have heard

With all the prs bashing that a person hears from time to time, it’s always nice when it can be so easily shown to be wrong. Ken Wheeler brought a new shooter to a match and loaned him all his gear. He helped the entire match, giving instructions and advice. It wasn’t even a PRS match, but an NRL22 match. He’s just a good dude like most shooters that enjoy this stuff.

Wind correction on the clock

What is the go to method for making a wind correction-while on the clock-that is good for multiple distance targets? For example, all things being equal, I make a wind call of 7 mph that will require .6 at 430 yds and .9 at 630 yds. But it takes .9 to center up the plate at 430. So I know I need to hold more wind at 630, what’s the most efficient way to figure out my new wind hold at 630?

Is it a simple matter of bracketing the wind on a data card? Is there some mental reverse engineering? I’ve got a 5 mph gun, so is it just a matter of adding an extra tenth or two based on my multiples of 5

Had a chance to check out some new optics this afternoon (Swarovski & Mavens specifically)...

As the title would suggest I had an opportunity to look through some (new to me optics) this afternoon and wanted to share some otherwise 'off the cuff' thoughts.

First off- I finally got to spend some time behind the NL Pure's. I was hoping to look through the new 14x52's but had to settle for the 10x52's (closest the vendor had in stock) and "wow". I finally understand what the fuss is about as I found them to be nothing short of incredible. They also had the Zeiss Victory HT's I could compare them to and I've still got to say that I found the NL's to be "brighter" and "clearer". I know not the best terms to use but given the limited time of about 5 minutes each- I walked away with the impression that they were both great glass but the NL's just punched at a higher level.

A comment I did hear from the vendor today, one that I hadn't heard before was when I was asking about the NL's as compared the SLC's (I wish I had the time to ask to compare them but the SLC's they had were the 15x56's and I didn't think it'd be 'apples to apples' nor did I trust my ability to hold the 15's steady enough to give 'em a fair evaluation) was that as good as the SLC's were, they found them to be somewhat fragile.

Granted, the vendor has a financial interest in selling the more expensive model (about a $1K swing between the models) but I've done business with them for many years and have always found them to be trustworthy and honest. The discussion came to some points, one of which being the weight & the SLC's being heavier. They said a pound heavier but when I looked into it after I got home it seems to be closer to 9oz but I get their point. But what they were saying is if a tripod were to be blown over the SLC's were far more likely to be knocked out of alignment from the one tumble and the NL's seemed to keep trucking on (again one of the reasons being the lighter weight/mass). I don't recall hearing the SLC's as being particularly fragile before but I also feel like the source I got this from has seen quite a few of these models come through and would be well equipped in speaking from a more macro approach.

300 PRC vs. 300 RUM

Hi all. I’ve have a PRC build at the smith but it’s not assembled yet. (Howa 1500; Shilen Select Match, 28”, 1-8”, 4 groove ratchet rifling).

Right now I’m shooting a 300 WM (26”, 1-10” twist) and I’m loading it long for single feed (approx. 3.7”). Last time checked I was getting 2900 with 225 ELDMs. Primers are flattened, but no marking of the cases or hard bolt lift.

I guess I’m second guessing myself because I’m wondering if the PRC is going to give a significant improvement or if I should have my smith re-chamber it for the RUM.

Out at Spearpoint the WM worked well at 2000 yards, but I don’t think it’s up to the 1 1/2 I’d like to shoot. Is the PRC good for that distance or should I go with the RUM. How much increase in performance would that change give. I’d like to stick with 30 cal on this build since I have plenty of bullets from the WM.

Thanks so much for your thoughts.

Loading Powder

I've been contemplating buying a automatic powder measure and scale.
I currently use a RCBS uniflow powder dispenser with a RCBS scale and a trickler.
I wanted to see if I would gain any time using an automatic powder measure so I timed myself loading 20 rounds using the uniflow and then trickling and loading the case. It took me 5 and 1/2 minutes to load 20 rounds that works out to 16-1/2 seconds per round. I'm not sure that an automatic measure can do it that fast.
The last time I shot those 20 rounds my SD was 8.4 for all 20 rounds
For now I think I'll save my money.

Rifle Scopes Amazon...for Athlon?

So I'm flip-flopping trying to decide whether the Ares ETR, is worth the extra coin to me over the BTR (4.5-27).
Pricing seems to be the same at the typical retailers, $850 vs. $1,200..
Then I see the BTR at Amazon, for $731., shipped Prime. With the spread closer to $500- it's becoming less of a difficult decision.

Tell me I'm not missing something, 'cause I'm thinking of picking up three of these at this price to upgrade another, and one for the next build...

LMT MWS Accuracy Expectations in 2024

I’ve been reading a lot of threads but many are from 2012-2014 it seems

Let’s talk accuracy from your LMT MWS setups. 6.5/260/308

I’m putting together a MWS and have a 16” CL barrel I picked up from the px on the way. Will run hunting ammo in hopes of under 2 MOA accuracy but will be looking for another barrel 18-22” range in 308 for it

Share your setups and accuracy

CL and SS also looking into custom from D. Wilson

Hot barrel was hammering…why

not smart enough to contribute much, but you folks always point me I the right direction.

Had a weird day at the range today. Lower end of my “node” if you believe in such things on this charge weight. I couldn’t recall if I had done load dev on this rifle with my supressor or not. So I backed it down .2 gr (6 creed, Lapua brass, 105’s) guessing that keeps similar speeds as unsupressed. I took bad notes, I know.

Hit my original great loads FPS, but rifle was walking all over the place. Decided to just kinda burn it down with 15 rounds on a hot barrel…result was just a hammer, all touching, one ragged hole.

Did the hot barrel increase speed and get back what the rifle likes with the can on? Was considering bumping back up .2 and .4 and seeing the results.

Jsut curious any theories behind why it only wanted to group when hot? I did put the chrono to it. Load dev (pretty sure unsupressed) was 2985…suppressed now and backed off .2gr was 2985, but it didn’t want to group cold to luke warm.

Gap contour barrel.

custom dies

My buddy had Whidden make him custom dies for 338 Norma mag improved. He sent 3 pieces of fired brass in and they made him dies. I used the same reamer on my rifle so I called Whidden and gave them the invoice number to order a set like he has. I figured they had it on record. They lady said the aren't making custom dies. Who is a good person or company to make me a full length die set? Can they make on with just the reamer print?
