Gunsmithing cutting oil for chamber reaming

Re: cutting oil for chamber reaming

I started using the Dark Threading/Cutting oil mixed with EP Tap Magic Xtra, about 70/30 Dark Threading Oil / EP Tap Magic. I was just using the Dark Oil but it was thick. This new mix works great and the EP Tap Magic thinned the Dark Oil down like it needed to be. Any sulpher based threading / cutting oil will do the trick

Thank Robert Gradous for that tid bit of info

Carbonator Pump and a 25 micron Hydraulic Oil Filter. I re-worked mine with different lines and filter system. I may add a second filter / filtration system ahead of the pump. Magnets placed in the oil flow help to catch chips as well.

Re: cutting oil for chamber reaming

I use what Kiff recommends for his reamers, Type F transmission fluid! I don't have a pressure system as I thread/chamber between centers. Yea,....I know....you can't cut an accurate chamber between centers using a steady!!!

Re: cutting oil for chamber reaming

LOL, this is about as easy as deciding which scope I want to use... I guess I am going to have to try a few different cutting oils and see what I like best. Will try Type-F too.

I currently have some threading oil that I bought from ACE (is clear and pretty thin) and some Tap Magic. I will play with those for now, but need to really get a pump system set up for chambering

Re: cutting oil for chamber reaming

Currently this is what I do:

1) Omega Sulfurized cutting oil for chambers and barrel threads, apply from a squeeze bottle to a tooth brush, and brush the reamer or threads.

2) Tap Magic for tapping steel, squirt if from the can.

3) Tap Magic Aluminum for tapping Aluminum, squirt it from the can.

4) Cool mist mixed 10:1 with tap water for milling steel or general lathe work on steel, in a house plant spray bottle. This coolant is the least obnoxious for the respiratory system.

5) No fluids for cutting Aluminum on mill or lathe. Run it fast and hear the Aluminum squeal.

The Omega price and performance is ok, the problem is if I get any on me, it stinks and stains.
I don't use compressed air for chambering.
I use a shop vac with HEPA filter.
I use Q tips.
I will even push a patch on a cleaning rod through the breech.
But I don't want atomized oil in the shop air.
Compressed air on oil for 2 seconds take the sinuses days to recover.

What does it all mean?
The grinder can come in the shop, if it stays in it's corner, but compressed air can never come inside.
Oil cannot be cleaned safely with compressed air, even outside the shop.

Re: cutting oil for chamber reaming

i have not noticed any bad smells or stains from the omega. now there are some other cutting oils i have found to be very obnoxious when they vaporize during a hot cut.

Re: cutting oil for chamber reaming

I use a 50-50 mix of Dexron III ATF and Kerosene my mill and lathe. I have an adjustable flood system on the lathe and a squirt can on the mill. Been using this mix for 15 years with very good results and no porblems.

Re: cutting oil for chamber reaming

I've been using Mobilmet Omega for a couple years now and have have great results and really great threads and chambers. I'm surprised - and dissapointed - that it has been discontinued. I guess I'll try the Shell Garia or other suggestions. SR

Re: cutting oil for chamber reaming

Hey Rob, I spoke with the guys from Kreiger while we were at the SHOT SHOW, and I posed the same question and they recommended any high sulfer content cutting oil. They didn't suggest or endorse any particular brand.

Thanks for the info on the Precision Matthews...I'm looking really hard at the 1340T model. Looks cool!!! Plus the guy that sells them back east from the link you sent me, I think his name is Matt, extremely helpful and takes time to answer any and every question.

Re: cutting oil for chamber reaming

Anyone try Mobilmet GAMMA? I have been told it is the same as the Mobilmet 766 product designation??? I can't speak from experience on this. I have acquired a lathe, PTG reamers were delivered yesterday and I need to place a large ENCO order to before the SAVE20 promo code expires tonight. I can get GAMMA and 766 locally for about $20 per gallon. Can't wait to play but need the last few bits and pieces before I start...

But what are the ratios ?

X amount of Kerosene + X amount of ATF + X amount of Marvel Mystery Oil

Re: cutting oil for chamber reaming

When I set up my pressure flush system I asked Dave Kiff with PTG on what was the best to use with the reamers he makes and he gave me a mixture of 60% Mobil Omega Cutting oil and 40% Ford ATF fluid. For me it works great but before the pressure flush system I used the dark cutting oil from a plumbing supply and the chambers turned out fine.

50/50/1 quart, means 1 gal of atf, 1 gal of kero & 1 qt of MMO

I use Re-Lion and Viper's Venom with equally good results. Viper's Venom has a smell while Re-Lion doesn't. Re-Lion does smoke quite a bit when cutting threads. I chamber between centers and don't have flush setup.

Are you using a flush system? That's what I wanna set up and figure I need at least 5 gallons of oil.

No, I'm not using a flush system. I'm running between centers on a bench lathe and would need one heckuva catch pan for that much coolant/oil! I'm going to look into it though. I'm tired of having to loosen the tailstock, pull it back and clean up so often.
