Kestrel Meters Ballistics Official Thread

They sell replacement impellers. I replace mine every so often with wear. https://kestrelinstruments.com/kestrel-impeller or https://kestrelballistics.com/kestrel-impeller
I havent heard from them and I want to use it monday so I used my compressed air and spun it for a while and now it not sticking anymore. Whether its accurate or not remains to be seen and I may have to order a new impeller for a brand new Kestrel so to me it really doesnt say anything about their quality.

I am fairly certain they would replace your impeller under warranty. Have you called in? Talk to Joe, he will square you away.

I did the air compressor deal and went to the range. A friend had a windmeter too so we compared. There was about a 1 lb difference in wind speed but his was an Amazon bargain unit so it may have been his that was off. I used the air compressor to blow through it for about a minute or two and it doesnt stick anymore and does that waddling motion if the wind isnt blowing or very light.

You def need a new impeller.

I just got on here to see if what I was experiencing was normal or what? I just bought it and hate dealing with warranties. Im going to the range Monday and see how it does when I get all my dope programmed in thru LINK. If it doesnt give me the correct scope adjustments I will order one rather than deal with warranties.
It is not normal, but Kestrel will hook you up for sure. Those things pop right out, and are meant to be field replaceable. I actually keep a spare just because.

I noticed some discrepancies in the adjustments. On Kestrel and AB Quantum I set absolutely identical parameters of the rifle, sight, environment. But the adjustments are different.

I set the same values of the MV-temp table. AB quantum correctly calculates MV - 828 m/s, but Kestrel for some reason gives significantly lower than AB quantum - 818 m/s at a temperature of +7 C. Could you please explain that ?

New Product Announcement

Kestrel is announcing the introduction of the latest Kestrel Ballistics Meter. The 5700X WEZ (Weapon Employment Zone) unit. Kestrel 5700X WEZ is equipped with the powerful AB Elite solver and WEZ analysis. AB’s WEZ gives the user the ability to

guide decisions on weapon systems, ammo and shooting skills to maximize their hit percentage. Shooters can determine what matters and optimize their Probability of Hit (P HIT).

  • Designed to be used in the field without the need for other electronics
  • Quantify the Probability of Hit (P Hit) for a weapon system against a specific target
  • Understand the uncertainties and increase confidence levels
  • Kestrel user interface simplifies the process
  • Calculate P Hit of a single target with a weapon system
  • Calculate P Hit of multiple distances on a range card
  • Calculate P Hit of multiple targets on a range
  • Compare P Hit of multiple gun profiles at multiple ranges
  • Determine P Hit of distances of each gun profile
  • Minimize range where your P Hit drops below X% of a P Hit

Retail price is $999 and we will be taking sales today. However if you have the 5700X already, you can connect to the Kestrel LiNK Ballistics application and upgrade your unit to a WEZ unit for just an additional $100. Unfortunately regular Elite owners will not be able to load this feature and would need to opt for our trade-in program: https://kestrelballistics.com/kestrel-trade-in-trade-up

Join us during SHOT show at booth 14856 to discuss this new product. Applied Ballistics will be at our booth Tuesday through Thursday to discuss this new feature and we will be giving away 1 free unit per day to a lucky raffle winner.

Kestrel Trade In, Trade Up Program

upgrade your Kestrel

NOTE: The upgrade will only work on HW 19 and 21 as shown in the About / Version menu. Older X units are next to get upgrade capability, as soon as we can.

Upgraded my 5700X to WEX today without issue. Happy this was an easy option! Thanks!

Interested to hear what you think. Perhaps a review. No YT video reviews yet, nor here on SH (either b/c most didn't know they could upgrade their 5700x through the app, which I just found out today through Kestrel C/Svc, or the WEZ models are just getting shipped out starting today).

Debating whether the $100 is worth the upgrade being built-in to the Kestrel 5700X (which I already have, courtesy of the Blk Fri combo package sale - thanks Kestrel!), or if the $100 might be better spent upgrading my AB Quantum Lite (free version) to the Pro version, at $30/yr (which would be a break-even for about 3 yrs ) to get the WEZ, advanced graphing, and CDF calibration functionality.

Edit: Just saw that today AB posted a 22 min YT vid on using WEZ in their app. Apparently, if you have a WEZ enabled 5700X & it's connected to the app, then WEZ is enabled in the app too, even if you have the Lite (Free) or mid-versions. Not sure if any other features are also enabled (in the Lite or mid versions), but it doesn't seem so.

This may be asked and answered. If so, hit me with the post #.
ISSUE:
The kestrel link crashes once I hit "get profiles". After reopening it, I hit the profiles icon and it crashes the app continually. I have to delete and reinstall the app fresh to get to the profiles screen.
Is there something I can do fix that?

Using an iphone 13 Pro Max with iOS 18.3

Try deleting them from the kestrel, shut off your phone and the kestrel, restart both and see if they link. Hold off on any more Quantum profiles until we figure out why.
checking back to see if any progress has been to the extent you can update us?
I followed the above instructions. - rebuilt the profiles in LINK. The linkapp is now stable. I'd like to be able to use the AB Quantum app though as well because I updated my 5700X to the WEZ and have a paid subscription for this year. Not being snarky, just looking for some good news.

I have a question, I am using a Desert Tech SRS. My scope is set up for the 338 Lapua mag. I have just added a 300 PRC barrel. When I zero the new barrel I will log my offsets in my 5700X Elite gun file for the new caliber. Is the shooting solution provided by the Kestrel absolute ie. say 4 mils up from zero, or relative ie. 4 mils up from the offset.

I have never used this functionality, up until now I have had a unique gun file for each rifle scope combo.

The offset is for the zero distance and is an absolute number. Left and low are negative numbers and right and high are positive numbers.

Please bear with me small brain here. I am shooting 700 yards I have in the gun file registered a -.4 mil ZH. My shooting solution provided at that range is up 4 mils. Do I dial 4.4 mils, 4.0 mil or 3.6 mil. I guess I am asking if the provided solution takes the ZH/ZO into account. Of course I have translated the mil adjustment to inches.

The ZH/ZO is built into the calculation. What would be the point if it wasn’t?
Also, why have you translated the mils into inches?

Yes, the solution given is the calculated value *WITH* the ZO/ZH input.
Change the ZO value and watch what the solution does. Now change it back. etc.
Now you're big brained.

you can change ZH ZO to other measurements instead of inches, highlight ZH/ZO press enter and use side arrows to change measurement units.

I went to build a couple new profiles in my Kestrel LiNK Ballistics app but I’m unable to click on my profile library now. Or the other two menus. They’re greyed out now. I used it earlier today at the range but not working now. Any help?

Menus at the bottom.

that indicates a kestrel and KLB are not linked. Shut both down and try to relink.

I know they’re not linked but the profiles used to be available without linking. I’d build several on phone in my recliner without ever having the kestrel near me or turned on or linked.

Not sure when this ‘update’ happened but my current version is v1.288(8)

Yep. Like pulling teeth. I swear…….

I like my kestrel but that is one thing that irritates me about it. I'd like to be able to go through my profiles or build new profiles without having to link the kestrel all the time.

Mine started doing the same thing this weekend. Hopefully not a permanent system change. Pretty lame if it is. If Kestrel is listening, that sucks we have to have the Kestrel connected all the time to create or edit gun profiles.

I agree in advance that it shouldn't be required - but have you tried connecting to your Kestrel via BT, and see if those menus change state?

Yes, of course it allows access when the Kestrel is connected.

The point is, it used to not be required and I'd build profiles while sitting in my recliner watching The Office and drinking may favorite single malt scotch. Now I have to get my butt up and go all the way to the garage and dig my Kestrel 5700 Elite out of the box of shooting-stuff-n-things, and walk all the way back to my recliner. Just waaay too much effort involved.

Like I said - I agree it shouldn't be required - it changes the nature of the bug description (and also means there's a workaround)

Like I Said, I already clarified that in a post already, let me quote it here

I should probably just wait until I get my 5700 elite on Friday and read the instructions, but I’m dying to know. Do you use the Kestrel link app on a phone to set up profiles and if so, does it get info from Applied Ballistics if you have that app, or do they not even interface? I don’t have AB yet, but was planning on getting it, but I’m not sure I’ll even need it. I’ve been using chairgun, but it’s time to upgrade. I wish Trump would take Strelok off the banned list.
