Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

I need a starting point for Berger's 210g VLD's using RL15. My best sub-MOA as far is as follows:
190g SMK
42.5g of RL15
Win brass
CCI BR2
2.240" ogive

185g Berger's VLD
42.0g of RL15
Lake City Long Range brass
CCI BR2
2.261" ogive (0.11" into the lands)

Ed Brown A-5 Tactical, 26" Shilen barrel 1:10 twist. Forster comp seating dies. Unknown velocity, but real happy with sub-moa @ 300yards.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

24" 1-11 twist Obermeyer barreled M700

175 SMK seated to 2.800 +/- .003
Lapua Brass
Fed 210match
42.6 RL15
2670fps, 21 ES, 7 SD (60 deg F)

same w/
43.4 RL15
2709fps, 33 ES, 8 SD (70 deg F)

155 Palma SMK seated to 2.778 +/- .003
Black Hills Brass
Fed 210match
44.4 I4064
2790fps, 33ES, 12.6 SD (90 deg F)

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

Mike D., I had similar results to yours with the Parker Hale barrel, at least in close, 100- 200 yds. Load follows:

Mauser 98 action
Parker-Hale 1-14.4 twist 26"
Hornady SST 150gr
Varget 48.0 with no pressure signs
Fed 210M primers
Loaded to 2.92" OAL to get .005 off the lands love the long action Mauser mag...
Avg velocity was 2997fps, max deviation was +/- 8fps

best ever 5 shot group was .475 edge to edge, corrected for bullet dia, makes a 5 shot .167 ctc, avg groups ran around .250-.375" with this load, in this rifle. Going off of memory and prior posts at the moment, as all my reloading gear and notes are packed away.

*anyone still have the M-118LR clone load data with 175's and RL-15 in LCLR brass, stored away, mine is somewhere...?

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

45.5gr of IMR4895
155 Scenar 0.015 off lands
Remington brass
Remington 9.5 primer

This produced 2920fps with an SD of 7fps with my 22" barrel. However I was getting a little bit of extractor wipe in mid-high 80's temperature so I'm going to back it down to 45.2 or 45.0 and do some testing if we can get another heat wave around here that will bump it up into the mid 90's.

What barrel and twist rate, your ES and SD? What kind of accuracy at 100, 300, 500 meters?

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

Gentlemen,

Is it the prevailing wisdom among you that RL-15 is not best suited for Bullets weighing less than 175 grains? As perusing the four pages of this thread finds only 3 posts with RL-15 loads for 168 gr MK's or A-max bullets.

I've settled on trying:
42.7 grains of RL-15
168 gr SMK
R-P cases ( mostly, 25 other mixed all 1X fired)
CCI BR primers
Rem 700 SPS 1-12" 20" barrel
2.815" oal

You might want to edit your previous post to add that info in, cause it makes no sense at all just sitting there by itself.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

FN SPR A5M, 24 " barrel

I tried:

155 Berger VLD
Varget, 45 grns
Hornady Match brass, recycled from once fired TAP
loaded mag tolerant at 2.840 coal

First group, around .18 second .23 (top 2 in picture). Three round groups.
Group on bottom is loaded into lands, 2.940
I will post velocity as soon as I chrono.

For some reason my rifle, which has a long throat, will shoot the crap out of 155 VLD's without cramming them into the lands.

This was my first try with Varget. Very pleased. I had been using R15 almost exclusively, a little 4895. Think I might be switching, as my rifle seems to like the Varget.

The rifle:

46.2 gn. Varget

shoots outstanding out to 1K!!!!!!

I've been out working on loads today...my rifle is also an SPS Tactical. (20 inch 1 in 12" twist barrel)

I found a good one...
168 Nosler ballistic Tip...BC is .490 (cheap bullets...found them on sale)
46 grains of RL15
R-P brass
CCI BR 2 primers
2.82 OAL
2,635 fps

I know that is more powder than most manuals list for that load...but it showed no signs of pressure in my gun. The Speer manual is the exception...it lists 47 grains as max.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

Ridge I tried 42.7 and 43.3 and liked both for accuracy with no sign of adverse pressure. I figured I'd try moving up some more but as I don't chronograph my rounds there will be only guesses as to velocity!

My Sporter weight barreled rifles in 06 and .308 both love those 150 and 165 grain ballistic tips. I also like the Nosler 168 match rounds. I did not know they made a 168 gr BT.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

The 168 BT is new...I stumbled upon them at the gun store.

165 Ballistic Tip's BC is only .410...so I figured the 168's with the .490 would serve as a dual purpose bullet...I was right.

I forgot to mention in my earlier post...I started at 42 and worked up...looking for pressure signs. I decided to call it quits at 46.5 grains because it was fast enough for me and very accurate.

If I get back out tomorrow...I'll shoot 5 for a pic. I've got 5 loaded and ready for just that purpose.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

BTW...
My notes show that in my gun...

43.5 grains of Varget went 2,512 fps (Federal brass)
44 grains of RL15 went 2,530 fps (Remington brass)

In Federal brass...44 grains of RL15 went 2,635 fps. (<<< MAX LOAD with that brass)

2.82 OAL

Need a .308 175 SMK load

Hi. I've been shooting Federal Premium Match 175 GRN SMK. I'm just getting set up to reload and would like to duplicate the factory load. Have lots of Federal brass so that's what I'll be using for now. So what primers and powder and load should I use? Thanks.

Re: Need a .308 175 SMK load

43gr of RL-15, 175SMK, Win LG Rifle primer, recycled Fed. Match WIN brass (prepped) give me 2630fps out of my 20" 5R barrel with SRT Shadow suppressor with 20ES.

Fed. Match out of same gun = 2650fps with 45ES

42-43gr of RL-15 is what Lowlight suggested in a thread I searched here and 43 was perfect for my gun. You might want to start at 42 though.

Re: Need a .308 175 SMK load

I pulled out my log book: Very close, relatively speaking, to Oregon's numbers. 43gr RL-15 was just shy of 175FGMM velocities with SMK175 in FGMM brass, 2.80 OAL.

Same results for CCI BR2 vs F-210M primers.

Start low, work up, see what happens beyond.

I like 42.8grs of RL-15 myself with 175s, 210Ms and RA-61s seated to about 2.840" for about 2650+, thru my Savage LE2b. Also shot some 175s with 42.8grs of Varget with the same supporting components yesterday that did fairly well. I shoot mostly at 100yds, so I don't need to bang them hard.

Thanks, I missed that. And thanks to everyone for the replies. I'm really looking forward to trying some reloads. I shoot a 5R and am hoping to get some better results than I have been. I have shot some good groups but not a s consistantly as I'd like. .70 at 100 yards and one .79" at 200 yards were my best so far. Most of the 200 yards groups run in the 1.25" range.

Re: Need a .308 175 SMK load

175smk
Varget 44.5Grains
Lupua Brass
BR2 Primers
2.815oal

This is a hot load. When I was load developing with varget, I noticed this power liked to be packed in. I get a screaming 2,885fps out of a 25.5inch Rock barrel.

Nosler lists the 165 BT's BC at .475. The 165 Partition BC is .410.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

Standard 700p
155 scenar
45.0 Grn H4895
Federal brass
CCI Benchrest primers
Avg groups @ 100 .5-.75 (usually a few outliers in there as well)

I don't get too indepth in my reloading. I try to be more of a shooter than a reloader but I have had fairly good results with this load. I'm not sure if the velocity is right since I have not used a chronograph on my loads yet. However, using a ballistic program I find that I must be pushing 3060-3070fps. I judged this by using a lazer range finder to get my distance then firing to get my actual dope at the lazed distance then comparing the dope to the ballistics program and messing around with the velocities until it matched my actual dope. I guess the only thing to do now is use a chronograph and find out if I'm right.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

I actually havn't checked my seating depth. I know i'm not too far off of the lands and I can not load the rounds into the internal magazine. Like I said I don't get to indepth in the reloading I just found a load that worked well and have stuck with it. I'm not sure what to tell you about the powder charge and pressure signs. I know that if I go another .5grns or so higher I do start to get some pressure signs. About the only signs I did notice when I did my load work was the rounds started to stick in the chamber after I fired. It wasn't too bad just enough to notice.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

Gents, going to start loading my own soon.

It seems like I see far more people using RL15 for the 175 SMK, as opposed to Varget, why is that? Might try the 178 A-Max as well.

Gun will be my bone stock 10FP.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

I could never get low ES (extreme spread) numbers with Varget. I have switched to RL-15 for 175 SMK and it's looking positive. RL-15 is a more less temp. sensitive but I can deal with that.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

Thanks!

Does anyone have the original load data that was pulled from Alliant's website for the 175 SMK? I had heard they HAD the data up for M118LR for awhile.

Thank you! Just to be clear: those are the original numbers that used to be on Alliants website? Or are those your numbers?
