.308 Winchester

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

24 inch Kreiger on Remington action
Black Hills Brass
44.9 grains Varget
175 grain SMK seated to max mag length, 2.830 inches max
CCI BR2 or Fed 210M primers
2693 fps at 500 feet above, 95 degrees

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

SPR A3 G, 24 in., 1 in 12

Lapua Brass
CCI BR2 primers
42.5 gr. Varget
168 SMK
OAL @ 2.825 in.
Have not shot it over a chrono. yet but guessing a little over 2600? VERY consistent sub .5 MOA. Most @ .3 or .2 (5 shots)

Lapua Brass
CCI BR2 primers
43.2 gr. Varget
168 VLD
OAL @ 2.925 in. (0.005 in)
No idea on the fps....yet.

Not good for a tactical comp. round but has anyone tried Scenars into the lands? I haven't tried that yet. They have been shooting OK @ max. mag length but was curious what they would do jammed. I know it made a big difference with the VLDs. You can PM me if you don't want to clutter this thread up. Curious is all.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

Lynx 94, 24", 1:12" twist.

Lapua Brass FL-sized with .336 TiNi Redding bushing

Bullet 155 Scenar (non-coated)

Fed 210

VV N150 47,0 grein

OAL: 73,0 mm i.e. 2.87"

898m/s or 2993 fps

Very accurate ! 1200 yard load on sea-level. Safe load also on summer time, no extraction or primer problems ever.

Bullet 170 Lock base (non-coated)

Lapua Brass FL-sized with .336 TiNi Redding bushing

Fed 210

VV N550 48,0 grein

OAL: 72,8 mm i.e. 2.87"

854m/s or 2846 fps

A safe load but the 155 Scenar load flies straighter AND is more accurate in my rifle.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

Jiffy,
I tried some 155 Scenars in the lands on my friends 1st Gen FN SPR. They came out to be 2.920. I loaded them over Varget. I think it was about 45.5 gr. Using Fed brass (free) so didn't push it as hard as my Lapua. It still shot under 1/2 inch at 200
yds. My friend was thinking of selling that rifle to get a new model. Not now!!!

No really, I have a question;

Is that OAL from the lands, or COAL?

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

26" Parker Hale barrel with a 14.5 twist-

150 Seirra match, Win/blk hills brass, WLR primers, 47grs varget.

gets 2850 fps accordin to the comeup chart. very tight 3-4 inch groups from 600 to 800. Got to 900 usin 31.5moa.

ran out of varget went with 46grs RL-15. 100 yard group tightened to real bughole. got to 900 agin with 30.75moa.

Doubt many use the older 14.5" twist cast off Brit sniper barrels but it was kinda interestin to see the groups.

stock REM 700LTR

tried this load out this weekend at 300m. My four shot group was 1 7/16". That's under .5MOA. I Love it!

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

GAP AR10T, 24 inch barrel, 5.5x22x56 scope, rig as is acquired from Keith on this site.

Load borrowed from OCW site, derivative of Jedi's IMR4895 load.
45.3 IMR 4895
LC LR 01 brass
BR-2
155 Berger VLD Molied
Mag length COL 2.83, jumping
Velocity, don't know, however come up is 12 minutes from 200 zero to 600. Someone with ballistic program please help.

Shot this load for the first time last weekend while hunting by the Tex-Mex border. I have access to a 1K range on the property for my high power practice. Just have 6x6 stand up target, my spotter had to walk out of the berm to mark shots. Set up two targets, one to get the elevation and the other to shoot group. All groups are only three shots. Zeroed at 200, moved to 3,4,5, and 6, adjusted for and developed drop chart, and shot 3 shot group at each yard line. The composite of the five 3 shot groups is 1.2 inch vertical and 2.3 horizontal. Surpised about the VLD tolerance to to the bullet jump. BTW, shot these from 10 to midnight, spotlights on the target and trucks headlights on the firing line, and the illuminated reticle on. Why midnight? Two reasons - no wind, and to keep the two legged Coyotes off the property.

Another excellent load on this rifle

42.4 IMR4895
175 Berger VLD Bare
Primed M118 brass
No velocity number, just shot this at 200 on our range in Austin, group is lees than half minute

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

Roughly 800 rds down the tube of a Savage 10FP LE2b, 26" 1/10" and MOA has been the norm, maybe slightly larger using 150 SMKs up through 180s, Lapua 155 Scenars, 167s, 150 LB, 170 LB, 185 Scnars, Berger 167/175s, yadda, yadda, yadda. I was thinking that I was the one guy that got the crappy Savage and figured that I'd put it up for sale and look to an FN SPR or something along those lines, however, 2 recent visits this past week using 168 SMKs and 185 Silver Scenars has produced these results, so I'm going to stick with them AND the Savage for now.

Savage112107.jpg

RA61 (2x), annealed, flash hole deburred, pockets uniformed, Bushing necked going 338>336", 210M, trimmed to 2.004", Chargemaster 1500.

168 SMKs: 42.7gr RE 15 seated to 2.790 & 2.820, off the lands. ~2685-2709fps.

185 Silver Scenars: 41.0gr VV150 seated to 2.835, in the lands slightly, ~2440fps.

SDs and ES weren't great, but I was kind of underfilled at these weights.

Bottom right corner groups were Sierra 168 Internationals with their 'blow hole' cavities and they were the first rounds of the day after a decent cleaning the night before.

what accuracy did you get from the 150's and which brand 150's?
I have not had good luck with the 150's for accuracy but they make HUGE holes in critters

I really haven't shot the Savage out past 100yds and to be honest, the past two years were an embarassment at even that paltry distance.

I'm going home to LA for some work next week and might bring it out now that I have some known rounds. I can shoot out to 600 at Angeles Range in the Valley.

This was today, same two loads basically:

Sav112507b.jpg

168 SMK over 42.7gr of RE-15, 210M, ~2.810", RA61 3x and
185 Silver Scenars over 41.0gr of VV150, 210M, ~2.830, RA61 3x

Not too bad with either. My Chrono was glitchy today, but the velocities of ~2700 & ~2440 were consistent with the previous data.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

Good groups Chris, Ive been using vit n540 45.6g with the 185g molly scenars ave vl 2620 fps With my 308 24inch barrel Blaser LRS2 rifle, This Load is very hot but safe in my stick, I will try n550 with the 185 as its slightly slower and might suit the 185g bullet weight better than the faster n540 although the n540 Loadings were very accurate, regards paul.

I've some Scenars 155gr I never loaded, and I was looking for some recipes (with IMR 4895). I'll develop up starting from 43.3gr, right around 50K psi.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

Someone mentioned it before but this is basically my duplicate of the Federal Gold Match for my rifle:

168gr Sierra HPBT
42.7 IMR4895
Federal Brass
Oal 2.8
Federal 210M primers
2640 to 2650 fps (same as FGM in my barrel)
Barrel: 26" Shillen

My son use the same as above in his Savage 110 with 26 Inches barrel. The difference is that he uses 42.3 grains of IMR 4895.

Using Norma brass I had to use 43 grains of IMR 4895 to get the same fps.

Rem 700P in .308 26" barrel:

175 SMK
43gr IMR 4064
2.8" COL
Win brass
CCI BR2s
2560 fps in cold weather

168 Rem Core-Lokt
crimped at cannelure
head/neck sealed
42.5 gr H4895

Win brass

Good hunting load.

These are pretty safe loads, they're not very close to the maximum. I was more concerned with accuracy than squeezing every FPS out of the rifle. However, please work up your loads slowly anyway.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

Hi all I need a starting point for my rem 700p 1:12 26"BRL 308.

Win Brass
Fed 210 Primers
IMR 4895
Sierra 168 HPBT

The data on the website is completely different then my 308 reloading guide. This is my first reload and I want to get started on the right foot. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

Start at 40 or 41 grains. You're accuracy load will prolly be around 42 - 43 grains. You should be able to go quite a bit more than that, but do it in small increments. Really though, with that setup, you're looking for accuracy, not top FPS, so don't get caught up on maxing out your FPS. You'll be very satisfied up to 600 yards.

If you want a long range load, try Varget with 155 Lapua Scenars. You can also try IMR 4064 and/or 175 SMKs.

Good luck!

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

USSR,

I've gotta tell ya, I've read some posts here lately that just defy logic, from folks giving out their loads without comment on velocity, to claims of 1/6 MOA accuracy at 300 yards with irons. I'm home sick with the flu today; but, reading these posts, I'm still laughing.

Let's make it 2605fps. That sounds more realistic, doesn't it?

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

Went to the range today to chrono some loads off of my MK11 Mod 0 and was a bit surprised of the velocity.

Powder: Varget
Charge: 44 grains
OAL:2.800
Bullet: 175 SMK
Barrel Length: 20"
Brass: SSA

Velocity: 2560

Groupings: .47" (5 shots at 100 yards)

I am very pleased with the groupings but was not too happy with the velocity. Would 45 grains be a bit to much for a semi-auto rifle?

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

thmpr,

If your getting 2560 out of an 20" tube with 44.0 of Varget you'd best be DAMN CAREFULL when you change lots of powder. At one time there was a "slow lot" you may have some. That load "should" be pounding your rifle HARD. That being said I'm not familiar with SSA brass, if it's like Remmy belay my last(some), if it's like LC-M be carefull.

Cheers, Doc

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

Thanks for the feedback Doc. Per Hogdon load manual, it states 45 grains of varget as the max load with a velocity of 2690 from a 24" barrel thus I am achieving what I am suppose to out of a 20" barrel.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

Savage 10FP, Factory 24" barrel, 1:10 twist.

Win. Commercial Brass
43.5 IMR 4064

2.815" OAL

2620 FPS at 40'F. My velocity adjusts up about 10 FPS for every 20'F off of my baseline. (ie. 2630 FPS at 60'F etc.)

Sufficiently mild, yet accurate. .5-.75 MOA load on no wind conditions.

I have been using some standard FED 210's with no ill effects in place of the 210M's.

I dont blame you guys for questioning my velocity and I my be wrong my chrony isnt the best maybe the sun was in the sensors but before I started turning the necks I was at 2754 FPS then I started turning my necks and using a bushing sizing die with .002 "grip" my velocity went up. I use Horus ATRAG and with that velocity I am right on. I want to be correct so next time I get a good day with some sun lately it has been shity weather here I will recheck my load. I dont want to be labled a B.S.er or critter capper jr so I will let you know what I come up with.
