I am trying to find the case capacities of some 7mm cartridges. Does anyone know where I can find this info. I am looking at 7mm RM, 7mm WSM, 7mm RSAUM, 284win, 280 and 280 AI, 7mm STW, 7mmRUM and lastly 7mm/08. So I guess almost all of them. LOL Thanks guys, advice and knowledge is much appreciated.

Re: Case capacity of 7mm cartridges

Why are you searching for case cap? I would be looking at overall performance or a case that fits the function that you are trying for before looking at how much you can stuff in it. Like the 7wsm or saum will perform with the best of them and your not loading bunches of powder. If you just looking for the best speed and performance the 7mm/338 Lapua Mag is gonna be the biggest beast you can find that will still work good in the 7mm caliber. Its about the biggest over bore 7mm you will find that still works good. Just not sure if you are trying to figure out what you wanted or just needed info.

Just looking for info. It is important for me to find the most effecient case that can throw a heavy bullet. Barrel life is also important

Give me a call sometime. I could help you out.

Re: Case capacity of 7mm cartridges

In a short action, you are going to get squeezed for length with the 284 and 284 shehame. You are pretty much going to be limited to the 162, though you will be easily able to get it to 3000. The SAUM will let you load the 180 and give you a little extra powder space as well. The other advantage of the SAUM is the longer neck which should allow for more consistent neck tension and possibly (debatable) longer throat life.

284 2.170" 66.4gr H2O .2847" neck
284 Shehane 2.170" 69.75gr H2O .279" neck
7mm SAUM 2.035" 73.5gr H2O .311" neck

In a long action, the point is mute.

Re: Case capacity of 7mm cartridges

The main difference in the 284 Shehane and the 7 SAUM is the bolt face. 7 SAUM uses a magnum bolt face; the Shehane a .308 sized boltface.

For a short action, length (and case capacity) of a 284 Shehane (and the in some cases 7 SAUM) will be serverely limited if you intend to magazine feed. If single feeding, then it will not matter, except you will not be able to eject a loaded .284 Shehane without pulling the bolt - the port is not long enough to let it come out with the bullet still in there. Performance of the two is going to be very close to identical. Capacity is also pretty close.

Most of the length-related issues with the .284 shehane in a short action are the same for the 7 SAUM, depending upon the bullet that you are loading.

I run a straight 7WSM and a .284 improved (not a Shehane...as I did a few tweaks to the case)....In most circumstance the performance is identical - 2,900 fps using the Berger 180s -using a 30" barrel. As you shorten the barrel, you start to put pressure on the Shehane (as compared with the 7WSM - case capacity wins the game on higher velocity and lower pressures)
