CZ 457

Hoping to get it out to the range next week and see if it shoots better or if I fucked it up good with the JB. Worst case, I ordered one of those L3i drop in barrels, not because of this, but because why not for $330. I'll probably just abandon the seasoning method and just take it back down to metal with a rimfire blend from here on out.
What's with this 'seasoning' stuff? I wipe all my factory & custom 22RF bores out with a few patches of Ed's Red every time I shoot any of my rifles - whether it was only a couple of rounds to kill a rattlesnake or 100+rds after a match. Too many rifles live here to keep track of how many rounds have been fired through each one, so I don't kid myself about being able to do so. Very seldom do I find a carbon ring in the leade with the Hawkeye borescope, and I'm not shy about using a bronze bore brush if I feel any leading when putting that 1st patch through - which usually also removes carbon while getting the leading out. That's undoubtedly because I don't let crap build up in my bores in the first place.

Greg Roman explains it well in this video (link will jump you to it at 31:12):

Basically the vid above explains it. However, I don't count rounds on any gun. I treat them like my ass...if I use it, I clean it.

I went the seasoning route because I figured those guys know a hell of a lot more than me. Prior to putting together this CZ I just occasionally plinked around with a cheap savage 17HMR and some old winchester lever 22's.

Really I don't believe the seasoning method was the reason my gun went south. It was operator error and me using an under sized jag to clean. My issue was probably going to happen regardless of the solvent.

I’m on the fence between three chassis, will mostly be using the rifle for PRS22, will run a 24in l3i 1.18” barrel and would like to keep extra weights to a minimum

- MDT ACC GEN 2
- Vision Pro
- Grey Birch

Do you know if the Grey Birch or Vision Pro will need modifications to fit the barrel? Most CZ chassis weren't designed to accommodate that large a diameter, specifically at the front action screw area. The MDT specifically updated the inlet design of the ACC Gen 2 for larger 1.180-1.250 barrels.

Mine is running a .900 Lilja so no issues there. Somebody here, I forget who, just did a 1.250 modacam build on the Grey Birch...the forend channel accomodates the barrel but he said slight clearance work was necessary to the receiver just forward of the action.

That's the part I was concerned about. That little area right in front of the front action screw is the potential issue on almost any chassis. Aside from the ACC gen 2, I didn't know of any chassis that accounted for 1.180+ barrels. I think most will need that slight modification. I know this was discussed quite a bit in one of the threads here.

Since you specifically said you need a chassis for PRS, I 100% recommend the Prem Gen Ii due to how much better it’s going to balance for barricades.

I recently changed over from an MPA and it balances so much better due to the foreend.

I don't shoot my 457 often enough. Whenever I pull it out to do a quick plink in the yard I'm impressed. Fired a box of SK STANDARD+ in the back yard real quick today at 50 yards.

The bullseyes measure 1 inch.

Got the L3i bottom metal in and installed yesterday. Definitely a nice piece.

Turned out the original magwell from the VMTR was starting to break apart so perfect timing. Seemed like a really odd place for it to start breaking, but glad I caught it before it got too bad.

Install went smooth and I'm very happy with the quality. Also glad I won't have to worry about it breaking in the future.

Got everything back into the stock and feels solid.

Kind of a specific question but what drag function are you guys using for your ammo in your ballistics app? I'm currently using G1 with SK standard plus but I've heard some people using G7 or the RA4. Am I overthinking?

My magwell has failed twice in that specific location as well

G7 form factor is based on a boattail bullet while G1 is based on a flat base artillery shell. G1 should fit and model a 22LR better than G7. Just saying.

Looks great!! I am also just starting a refinish job on my MTR. Have not decided on clearcoat. What did you use?
Before and after pic of my MTR!

I stripped all the finish off with citri strip.

Wet sanded it with 600 and used the wet slurry to fill the pores in the stock.

I used tru oil and rubbed it in with my fingers. Let it dry over night, hit it with 0000 steel wool and rubbed another coat on it.

I needed up going with 5 coats. Sanding with steel wool in between every coat.

I’m looking at the 457 varmint in the boyds stock barrel options are 16.5 and 24 inches I will be shooting suppressed what’s everyone’s thoughts on what barrel length to go with? I like having long barrels with my 6 mm and magnums etc but not much experience with rimfire

Depends if you're just plinking or shooting matches. For matches, the longer barrel and no suppressor. For plinking, suppressors are fun as hell.

I target shoot at home . I have 1000 yard range and I will want to stretch the rimfire out a little and being heavier doesn’t bother me . I just didn’t know if barrel length changed velocity like it does with the center fire stuff

A heavier barrel will definitely help since you're gonna be shooting that kind of distance. You could always go for the shorter threaded barrel and get a different barrel later. It's only two grub screws to replace the barrel.

Oh easy barrel change I like that . Thanks for the input . So the longer barrels only added benefit is the weight? Like I said I have had 22s my whole life but never a nice one and I have never paid attention to the nuances of rimfire

With 22 LR barrel lenghts over 18 inches or so actually slow the bullet down, you will loose muzzle velocity. But it have shown for many manufacturers and gun smiths that it's beneficial for accuracy, hence why many precision 22's are around 20 - 22 inches.
Lots more to it, but that's what I've learned reading and listening to the 'big names' in the rimfire world.

Yeah, I wish they had an option in the middle somewhere

Do anyone know specifics about CZ's 'accuracy guarantee' on the MTR?
They claim
'15 mm groups at a distance of 50 m'
But I haven't managed to find any info about what ammunition they use, or if there's any form of return policy if your specific rifle doesn't manage that standard... 🤔

Pulled my 457 out of the safe after several years of squatting. Getting it ready for my range to start Extreme Long Range Rimfire-300 to 500 yards. Made a few mods to it. MDT 50 moa base, MDT bipod, Anarchy Dragon Scale bolt knob, JARD trigger set at 3.5 ozs, and DiscoverOPT 5-25 MRAD FFP scope. Tested at 50 yards with SK Rifle Match. 5 shot group. We shall see if this old dog will hunt soon.
