I'm not sure I get how what they did was worth sending emails that said "something big is coming". It's a steel cased, magnum bolt face, long action 7mm that's not saami spec yet. Seems like a quirky 7mm prc competitor that won't catch on cause someone else did it first and 7mm rem mag won't go away(and doesn't need to)

It’s not a magnum bf. That’s about the only positive I see if some manufacturers offer scaled down (non 1.35” o.d.) actions for it.

You're right, not magnum BF. Also I agree on you with the limited positives, sig tried the steel case head with the 277 fury and nobody wanted it.

You know an ammunition manufacturer is out of touch with the shooting community when they insist on introducing new niche cartridges nobody asked for instead of just decided to manufacture factory 6 Dasher or 6 ARC ammo

Or, are they attempting to force gun owners to buy new weapons to handle them? The Software/IT industry does this all the time. They sell you software that requires greater hardware that's designed only to work with the newer software that makes you buy newer hardware, etc. etc. Endless revenue!

Yeah no let’s bring another one. It’s not like there’s already a component shortage …let’s start another production run for a dozen of fudds and magazine writers - it worked so well with the 6.8 western.

If you’re gonna sell your own line of +p steel cased precision ammo, why advertise a 200fps increase over the Hornady loads for 7PRC or Remmag ? Then get the shills in the magazine to write about the extra killing power or how they can now increase their ethical hunting range another 200 yards because muh velocity.

So, it's a steel case... I'm assuming non-reloadable? Therefore trying to dissuade people from being able to reload for it, and use their components. Just another reason to stop using Federal brand anything. Even though they're all owned by the same umbrella corporation, I'll still stick with CCI brand primers and Berger bullets.

Apparently they're only offering this shitty new non-reloadable cartridge, in the most shitty rifles they could possibly stuff them into... Salvage...

Federal says is reloadable.
They don't say exactly what you need to accomplish it though. They say following their procedure.

It basically looks like a steel-cased .280 Ackley with the pressures ramped up thanks to the steel case... Just buy a .280 Ackley, or step up to the 7mm PRC or 7mm RemMag.

Their brass is definitely soft... I know this from MANY different cartridges over the years...It's all the same. And the bigger the cartridge's capacity is, the worse it gets.

I only use Federal .308 Win brass for 2 things, because I've picked up half a 5-gallon bucket of it that was freshly 1x fired from the range (free) over the last couple years... I only use it personally for subsonic .308 Win ammo. And the other use is, if anyone asks me to load ammo for their .308 Win, I use the brass I picked up for free at the range, so I don't have to use my nice Lapua or Alpha brass. I don't feel bad giving away free range pickup brass.

Those velocities sure do look spicy for turnt up .280 ai, 170gr - 175gr @ ~3k fps out of a 20" barrel. What's that, maybe 2,800 fps out of a 16"? If so that's about what I'm running 180gr in a 19" 7 PRC. Might be fun to play with for a hunting rifle... On the other hand I killed all my deer this year with a 6 ARC SBR and subsonic .44, and elk tags in my old stomping grounds are getting thin, my powers of rationalization can only do so much.

Maybe all the hullabaloo in their ad copy and Instagram about big things coming hints at a line of (hopefully reloadable) steel case HP cartridges, that would be kind of rad.

Lots of pessimists here! DOD driving lots of development into higher performing ammo and I'd bet this spins off that work. Maybe federal threw the 7mm backcountry together to test-drive the high pressure - alloy case stuff with the civilian market. Brass is great but it was maxed out long ago.

Comparisons to the 7prc are dumb: they're not advertising 7prc performance, they're advertising 28 nosler performance: in a non-mag caliber and potentially with a 280 win powder charge and perhaps barrel life? If so, wtf is there to complain about. I want to know what type and how much powder they're using to drive a 195 at 3k fps. Big question obviously will be if non-brass cases can ever be reloaded as consistently as brass. Hopefully federal shares what they've learned and some of our reloading equipment companies can figure out how to wring out any potential.

That said, I'm not running out to buy a savage and a case of this ammo anytime soon, or probably ever... But I think it's great that the industry is innovating in this way. Could be a bust, but we're not shooting musket balls today and I don't think we're gonna be shooting lead core bullets and brass cases 50 years from now either.

I'd say the Sig .277 fury failed because they announced it with much fanfare and then pretty much never shipped the promised rifles or barrels for it and pretty much never shipped any of the promised hybrid cased high pressure ammo.

I wanted to get some and never could find them shipping or selling any.

If Federal was providing that kind of performance out of a short action using 180gr+ 7mm projectiles I would probably be willing to risk dealing with proprietary cases. Out of a long action,I'll sit this one out.

Just looked on the ARC website. A long action/chassis compared to a short action is only 7 ounces heavier. If you can’t live with an extra 7 ounces you need to clean crap out of your pockets and hit the gym.

Recoil is simple math, energy forward equals energy rearward, after that it's just about masses. The only ways to makes a gun kick less shooting the same bullet at the same speed is to make the gun heavier or add a compensator.

yes. and, with all those resources, why not offer the most comprehensive ammo lineup in the game? do runs of older ammo and advertise the drops... 220 swift, 250 Savage, 257 Roberts, 257 STW, 260 Remington, 22 Creed, 30-06 with some actual useful bullets and so many others. and multiple bullet weights for many.
