Sitting at lunch and my brain came up with some fuddlore I'm surprised I've never heard.
(I don't own a 1911, and I'm on the 9mm side of the argument)
911 was chosen as the emergency line because of the 1911.
1911 is the only work appropriate firearm because you have to dial 1 to get an outside line.

Also note fuddlore. myth and misinformation concerning firearms that is often repeated by older gun owners, or by those with little or no actual firearms experience.
Example: a near miss from a 50bmg will blow an arm off.

Handled a PDP a few days ago and was impressed with it. Sometimes I wish I wasn't so "bought in" to Glocks.
PDPs are fun. Their customer service/support is good and parts availability is alright too but I want to purchase a custom Glock (seen a few cool ones on guns.com between $700 and $900) sometime in the future.

Interesting, the other day, just messing around, I put 8 of 10 shots into a pie plate at 75 feet with a stock 3.5" 1911 Colt Compact. In the photo. The other one is the almost brand new Colt Anaconda with bead blast finish. At first I didnt like the finish but I've come to love it, more utilitarian and less gaudy than the high polish. Very accurate and the recoil isnt bad. I keep it by the bed and fondle it every night before lights out.
Something a little different. Benjamin .22 cal front pump pellet pistol circa 1930. Picked it up for $30. Just gotta find some new seals before it slings lead again.
I have one of those and like, but dont love, it. Being a 1911 guy it does fit the hand very much like a 1911, my one drawback is its 9MM. As a youngster I watched all the old WWII movies and documentaries like the Big Picture, and all those guys carried 1911's so when I got old enough and it was time to buy, the pistol that served through 2 world wars and VietNam seemed like a no brainer. I've had Pythons and other fine pistols but I just shoot better with an old reliable 45ACP
Get one in .22 cal, see if you like the sight picture, grip angle,........etc......IF so, then move on to the real deal.
I'd go with a Commander size, a nice compromise between fullsize and compact, easy to mod, and reasonable recoil. what the guy below said about the .22 if youve never fired a large caliber, but not tooo much of a step up from 9MM. I wouldnt for with a real high end, Colts are just find or they make some excellent knock offs from Turkey.
I've not handled on so I cant comment but like @oldrifleman says below, (or above?) Colt's are a win, they hold their value.
I recommend a Dan Wesson for a moderately priced 1911.
i belive the date of tat Compact in my phot is 1998, I was hitting a 10" circle today at 50yds.
Full self build and Cerakote. Dropped a new barrel in it recently to test. New barrel is Killer Innovations; same as the slide. Their barrels are single-point cut rifled. Thread relief in this one put the compensator about 1/3 clock away from slide nose; it is within a few thousandths and doesn’t make contact during firing cycles. Better fit all the way around.
Serious and fun versions. Mantis on mag for holster work.
You dont need to spend a lot of money for a suitable self defense weapon. The target below was one mag, shot at 50 yds from the stock Colt Compact shown above. First 4 were way low so I brought it up and viola'. For comp you might want a more refined gun but ....
I'm a big fan of the commanding officer version. A 4.25" bbl and officer frame.
Gen 5 G34 - It might not be pretty, but I like it.

I stumbled across some glocks that B&T did for Swiss LE. They slammed the acro low enough to use the factory irons. I wonder if anybody would duplicate this cut because it looks sweet. The optic cut needs to be all the way back to avoid the extractor channel.

What's the story behind those grips? They're rather wild (and I dig 'em too for that matter), did you have to get a LB specific cut for them?

I saw a 5” 454 Super RH for sale and thought “I wonder if someone makes an appendix holster for it?” You know for shorts and flip flops weather in bear country. If your carry gun can’t deliver 1800 ft/lbs are you even an American?
This is the holster I used. It works well with both the srh and anaconda. A friend who is a leatherworker helped me make it.

I just happened to come across them on Ebay 6 years ago. There had been quite an array of great looking acrylic with wood at the time. I have a whole box full of various wood, metal, antler and G10 grips that look cool but these caught my eye and they stick to my hand for a better grip than the rest. No cut, they just fit right out of the box
God that thing is ugly,,,,,,,, what is it????
