Ok I am ready to take my 338L out to a mile. How are you guys establishing your yardage, are you using a GPS, I dont have a range finder that will give me dependable readings @ that distance. Are there any handheld GPS units that can be converted to yards instead of tenths of a mile. I want to be able to get the yardage spot on, and be able to work on cold bore shots @ varying yardages.

Thanks Corey

+1 on incremental ranging.

A reflective object (i.e. road sign) placed at the target and/or shooting position will stretch your RFs capability as well.

Re: How to range target @ 1760 GPS???

I've had to do incremental ranging on a number of occasions. I only get 700-800 yards on a small reflective target, further on a large one, so as i'm going back further from the target, I leave something along the shooting line as a ranging object. I know that the primary shooting line goes back to 1200 yards, however on longer shots to plan, i'm using google earth, and plotting points where the distance is known, it's spot on. Planning other shots of long distance from points that I know I can get a rifle onto, Google earth is great because it gives me a azimuth that the shot path will take, calculating a back azimuth is easy, and allows me to properly place a target.

I would love to have a rangefinder that will range out to 2500+, but I don't have that kind of money. I hear those units are in the $10K+ range.

I have ranges full sized silhouettes @ over 1900 with the sqwaro. Thats the next best thing to those high end LRF's. But I agree with Google Earth. It is very accurate.

If forgot to mention I have an old tank laser that will range 10,000 yards and I am selling it if anyone is interested PM me, I'm letting it go for cheap too.

Newcon laser range finders. Had the opportunity to look through one of them. Damn, I want one. But the cost is certainly quite prohibitive. The one that I looked through is a 5000 model I believe, and it goes for about that much in price also. We ranged relfective targets out to close to 6000 yards. Unless you are calling in artillery support of air strike, I think that distance is more than adequate for most rifle range. LOL.

Re: How to range target @ 1760 GPS???

My swaro doesn't want to range anything past 1400 most of the time reflective or not. When I go further and can't use incremental ranging use an inexpensive Garmin GPS, it is supposed to be accurate +/- 5 yds but seems closer than that most of the time.

Tenths of a mile is a simple fix 17.6 x .80 tenths = 1408 yds

Although for cold bore shots its still probably not accurate enough.

Re: How to range target @ 1760 GPS???

I have ranged reliably out to 1500 + yards with my Swaro. Still, I think the Newcon is an awesome LRF. It's certainly on my wish list. For now, I use my Garmin 60 CSx GPS and it gives me very decent readout. An alternative also is to use the incremental read.

Re: How to range target @ 1760 GPS???

You can interface a GPS to Field Firing Solutions, which will allow you to get the range from GPS position data as well as calculate the solutions.

You can also do it longhand. Since UTM or MGRS coordinates supply an Easting and Nothing value in meters, you have the sides of a right triangle. Example

Sniper’s coordinates: 29310E 52900N (the zone is not relevant)
TRP’s coordinates: 29720E 53410N

Subtract the easting values: 29720-29310 = 410
Subtract the northing values: 53410-52900 = 510

Using the Pythagorean Theorem, a² + b² = c²

Range² = 410² + 510²
Range² = 168,100 + 260,100
Range (in meters) = sqrt(428,200)
Range = 654 meters ( / .9144 = 715 yards)

This will be good to twice the accuracy of the GPS positions. If you have 6 meter accuracy, you would be no more than 12 meters off in range.

i'm in the process of learning this procedure, need more time and practice, wish i had someone like you to shoot with & to learn from, first hand.

i would if i could make the time to get down there!

Re: How to range target @ 1760 GPS???

To get the most from your RF try hanging a couple Licence plates side by side at your target. My old swaro would range them at a mile most of the time. Now I have a PLRF10 and I simply put the crosshairs on it.

10000 yards? Do you have a Hell Fire Missle to go with it

How big is this tank laser rangefinder? Lol Im guessing not pocket sized...

I've done the same.

GPS's aren't exact either, usually off by 3 or so yards. The incremental ranging is a good method also.
