i am constantly reminded by atheists that morality is not bound to religion, even though they have no idea what it might be like to live in a society without any religious foundations.
The problem is that as much as people freak out when you say it. Morality is subjective and subject to regular change, regardless of where you choose base your morality on. Many previous religious based societies even those based on Christianity, would seem like a nightmare world if you were suddenly to be stuck in one of them. Religion in and of itself is no guarantee that the morals of society will be what you subjectively think is good.
Even the Atheist religion types regularly have to change morals around to figure out what seems to work best for an age and things can swing back and forth quickly. Just look at the history of laws and morals in the Soviet Union or Communist China as an example, Atheism may shape a society but society will also shape the Atheism.
Religion is no different, as much as religion will shape a society, so will a society shape a religion.
Humans always manage to "mold" religion, morals and such into being what they want them to be for their own convenience.
You'd be hard pressed to find any religion today that is not significantly different from what the founders/prophets/named deities laid down.
Not killing people seems like it would be a simple basic universal thing for "morals" but it always very quickly has a long addendum added of:
**Except for: (insert undesirables here according to your specific tastes).
Those with the power, privilege and / or who feel untouchable either individually or as a nation tend to warp their views of "morals" so they are "more equal" than the inferior people/countries. The USA is a glaring example of this with all their "righteous" stomping around the globe killing people because whatever the reason of the day is, and caring little about any "inferiors" who get killed but being all indignant when any of those "inferiors" hits back and kills one of ours.
What is accepted both in society and/or religion as "morals" tends to change quite substantially with the various ages.
It also changes dramatically from culture/country to country on many different levels.
In the good old USA is perhaps one of the most glaring examples of how people twist morality into what they want, no matter how illogical or insane it would seem to someone more logical, but it's not the first. Go down through history and you'll find morals and religion on the side of many things you hate and against many of the things you like.
Your religious beliefs may strongly condemn somebody over Abortions
But just also consider somebody else's religious beliefs may strongly condemn and demand punishment for what people now freely post in the motivational pictures thread... and actually did so in this country for many years...
Also somebody else's religious beliefs may strongly hold you to being a heretic or infidel and because of your 'incorrect beliefs", and folks have been happily killing each other over that for thousands and thousands of years.
