Need advice - Rimfire (edit - 40XB) on AI Chassis

Yes, I know there are people that have them and I am <span style="text-decoration: line-through">considering</span> getting serious about building one as a trainer for my .308 but I need help deciding on a platform.

What do you suggest?

I'm leaning towards a Ruger 77/22 Mag since I have some parts already stockpiled (barrel, trigger, hammer, etc...) but is there a better option?

You might want to consider getting a used airsoft called an L96 off ebay.It is exactly like the real thing and plenty sturdy enough.There is at least one guy on You tube that has put a rimfire in one.Could probably have a simple aluminum block made and epoxy/screw it into the stock.

why not get a 40X from Remington in their 22? Direct drop in with the AI chassis...there was someone on here that did a slick mod to an AICS mag that allowed him to use that with the 40X mag welded in the AICS

If you want a true AI chassis system, then you'll need to ditch the 77/22. There are NO similarities between the 77 and the 700 actions (other than they are both bolt actions) so modifying a chassis to fit the 77/22 would be a "ground up" project with some major fabrication work if it can be done at all.

You'd be better off if you want an AICS trainer to go with the 40X as folks have mentioned. Direct drop-in to the AICS and Underground Skunkworks and CDI Precision are working on systems to adapt the chassis for 22lr mag use.

Now, with that said, the 77/22 is a decent rifle. They can be tuned to achieve excellent accuracy with quality ammo and I am sure that a complete build would serve you well...you are just going to be left standing in the dust in terms of aftermarket support compared to other options.

95LTZ - that is for a 10/22... I have one of those done with a Boyd's Tacticool.

Its looking like the 40X may be the way to go... I was stuck in a tough situation I was hoping I could make work. A really good friend gave me a brand new Volq Super Match barrel for the 10/22 Mag as well as a ton of parts. I may just need to build out a "normal" 77/22 Mag as well just to show my appreciation. But as was pointed out... stock selection sucks.

I'm not against a couple grand going into a trainer - the AICS will run $800-850 and a 40XB will be another $800 plus a rebarrel. Base, rings and scope can be handled quickly.

Deadly, I was thinking about that as well. I have a couple extra mags and I guess I could risk one to experiment when the time is right.

I second the 77/22 action needing complete rework for any 700 stock fit. The 77/22 action depth is more or less 1/2" shallower than a 700 action which means if mounted the action flush you would still need to lose more than a 1/4" off the entire top of the stock, after bedding the tang a 1/4", just to have the trigger sit properly in the trigger guard area.

Best bet is a 40x or if you want a ground up build then the more pricey Stillers Predator 25X action which is 700 stock and component compatible, it is however around the $800 range for the action and I am not even sure if they are shipping yet.

Skunkworks has a rem 700 .22lr clone coming out at the end of the month. At least that's what the told me a few weeks ago. I hope they are still on schedule.

Just as an FYI, I spoke with a Remington Rep and Remington themselves are considering bringing back the 40X rimfire Q4 2010 or Q1 2011.

As for making one from wood... might not be a bad project, but not for this build as I am wanting something as close to my 308 as possible

+1. They'll likely only offer it out of the custom shop and it will cost $2.5k+ or something completely ridiculous, and it will feature presentation-grade wlanut stocks, etc. While I hope they do and I hope that they make some common-sense decisions after reviewing where the interest really rests with the 40X rimfire...I'm not holding my breath. The only thing that gives me hope is the recent intro of the AAC 308 with a threaded, 1:10 twist barrel (apparently somebody inside Cerberus/Remington is awake and paying some attention to their customer base).

The bad part is the "40X" moniker. They like to hold that as their "top of the line". So if it retains the 40X name you can bet it's going to be expensive.

It would be nice if they would offer one exactly like the SPS-T or SPS-V in .22LR and at the same price.

I've found some 40X(s) for sale and Don has been helping me. But truthfully, it is WAY hard to buy one online without knowing anything about them.

You can get a cheaper airsoft rifle with the L96 stock. Split her apart and put in your rifle. Use some clay or something for a mold and mill out a block that will bond the two together.

There was a guy that did do this with a Tanaka L96 airsoft rifle and then made a block for his Anschultz I believe. The airsoft rifle that he used is close to $500 alone.

I am sure it can be done. You will just have to be creative and resoursful, and call in some favors from a local machinest.

How much modification to the AICS will be necessary to fit it?

Also, will the current production one-peice Remington base(s) work on this receiver?

I posted a reply for the same post you have on rimfirecentral but just in case you did not see the post I will post it here as well. I thought it was kind of strange when you stated that it was a heavy barrel on a 722 (never heard of anyone mentioning that combo existed). Now that we got that straight well it's all good news for you. Many many people have already done what you are wanting to do. Just do a search here on Snipershide for 22 trainers and you will see a few CMP Remington 40XB also sometimes known as the 40X-HB because the CMP issued them in either a standard barrel or heavy barrel (HB). You should have no problem with the action fitting in the AICS chassis. Just make sure when you use your nightforce rail to do the 2 screw trick to make sure the rear bridge is high enough so there is no gap between the that and your rail. As for the safety any regular modern 700 trigger with safety will work with your action (you are no longer forced to get the jewel with bottom safety). Good luck with your build and you must show us pictures when you have it completed.

Yes, if the rear bridge is tool low then you will need to shim to make modern bases work. Lots of people just use metal shims while others bed that area since the bedding acts as the shim.

40X-HB got here today. I didn't realize how freakin' HUGE these things are. Beautiful hunk of metal.

I dropped a TPS base and rings on and set a 16X Super Sniper I had here on it. No problem at all with the base. Everything lined up perfect and locked in tight (thanks for the tip on tightening the front screws to check).

I'm not going to jack with the trigger for now as it seems pretty nice already.

I'll probably just shoot it for a while before dropping it an AICS.

Glad everything worked out for you without the shims (in my mind I knew with the 40X-HB you will most likely not need shims, between you and me we now have 7 counter examples.....lol.....inside joke between you and me). Now get out there and shoot the rifle plus post pictures of your setup or it didn't happen.....lol.

LOL!

I'll get some pictures... I took it out today to see what it would do with the Eley Target Rifle I usually use and got it sighted at 50 yds. Easily less than .5" Then I took it to 100 with some Eley Match and went .75" OD group with 10 shots... I was VERY suprised.

No changes needed except the stock. Looks like MileHighShooting.com will be getting an AICS order soon!
