Apparently there has been a low level civil war going off and on in scattered regions as a response to police brutality against starving investors and business owners who had suffered catastrophic losses and received no help from the bureaucrats. Frustrated townsfolk in the countryside have began killing police officers and Communist Party officials in reprisal. This has started during the waning days of the final COVID lockdown when the first wave of guerrilla hit and run violence forced the government to end the lockdowns overnight in December 2022.
The latest targets of the sporadic "territorial war" seems to be health officials who had served during COVID, some rank and file cops, technicians who operate police drones, and once in a while somebody gets lucky and pops a provincial level official.
Chinese state media has been keeping real hush about it and have ramped up their cheery singalong everything's lookin' good propaganda. On the phone with my cousin in Shanghai last night and he couldn't say much due to risk of the line at his end being monitored, but he said "summer pot roastings all over the rural areas", chuckled, and I knew immediately what it meant. To roast (sao, or tang) is the Chinese euphemism for an ambush attack where somebody scopes out a target, follows them, and then dumps either boiling water or a very caustic substance over their heads and faces. Usually VERY fatal. Those who survive a "roasting" usually never can go out in public anymore because people will see their faces and think a demon is among them. So that is how they are getting it on. Dayum...
