Bump firing is lame in my opinion. It's just a big waste of ammo to me. I agree, ammo is just too expensive to just throw away like that!

Broker, not so local but Three Forks ammo and reloading in Cle Elum has donated to local matches in the past and has a good selection if anyone is out that way. Also Pintos gunshop on Wells Avenue in Renton has a good selection of powders, primers, brass and is well versed in ffl transfers.

haydon is about to retire so don't bother too much, he mostly caters to BR crow and doesn't have much for us LOng range guys but awesome cleaning gear and some Lapua brass.
If you want BAT actions he had over 18 of them a few months ago though.

I have been to Russ Haydon's a few times. He and/or his wife have always been very helpful, and friendly even though they didn't know me, and I am not a real "regular". It is nice to have somewhere local to get things like de-burring tools, cleaning gear and so on.

Although at first I thought the prices were a bit steep, when I added in how much it would cost me to have stuff shipped, or pay shipping and handling, their prices are about what I would have ended up paying. The big advantage is that the items are there NOW, and I don't have to wait 2 weeks to get an item ordered off the internet.

They usually have Lapua brass, and Berger bullets. I think they are getting away from the Sierra bullets, but they seemed to have a pretty decent stock of Berger bullets in stock.

I didn't mean to ignore your recent acquisition...I know how much you have been hoping the approval would happen before the next ice age. It looks really great.

I'm trying to find out about a place in the forest outside of Olympia that I heard goes out to around 800 yards. I'll keep you posted, but as with all of the primo sites, I don't want to put it out on the internet and end up finding that it has been trashed by people shooting old appliances and television sets that they leave out there. Those who have shot with us, of course, will not have trouble getting the information.

It's gonna have to be when I can get Ryo out with me since I'm still waiting on the tax stamp. I'm hesitant to shoot it without first getting an adjustable gas block, but I've heard from others it should be fine. I'll have to do a field zero on it and test the POI shift to make sure it's everything they say it is... the 5-6 months is gonna be worse than the 6 month wait I had just to get it to my dealer

Wasn't that thing running a little undergassed in Moses Lake? I can't remember the details, but either way it won't hurt anything in the short run. Worst case it would be so overgassed that is overruns the next round in the mag, but I doubt it will be that bad. The SF cans are supposed to have less backpressure than a regular thread-on.

Ok. I just got back from the high mountains. It was hot, & sunny which made it real hard to get my rangefinder to read past about 1200yd, but I got some ffp's, & convenient white rocks to shoot at. Longest I could get was a little over 1700yd, & the closest I looked at was about 700yd. This morning I went to a spot, & shot @ a rock about the size of my head @ 1589yd. I never actually hit it I don't think, but I missed by a few inches several times. Anyway, I have a cof in mind now for a Loooonnnng range shoot sometime. Also made me realize I have got to get a teripin or plrf10.

Well its that time again i have been getting a lot of requests to have another match. So i wil be hosting one December 1&2nd in ellensburg WA, match will be my normal style of stages only it will be over 2 days (start later saturday 930-11am tbd, end reasonable time sunday 3pm roughly).

Round count will be between 120-200 probably closer to 150.

Just like every match i host be prepared for anything i.e. standing, sitting, prone, barricades, shootn'move stages, max distance of 1300yds but 90+% under 900yds.

* caliber restricted to 300wm and under (if you bring a magnum be prepared to get the barrel hot most stages will be 10-15rds in 3min or less)

** will be on site dry camping (however there will be portopotties on site)

Price will be $115 and will include a t-shirt and a basic bbq saturday night. Please send payment to

I have sent a couple of emails to Upper Nisqually asking if I can reserve the range for the 18th of August for a practical rifle match, but haven't heard back yet. I don't want to pester the range officer who handles the range reservations and end up being blacklisted...but dang, I sure would like to know if I can have a match.

On the positive side, the club DID decide to give the discipline some money for supplies...so I have the feeling that they want it to work out.

I've never done a match, ever. But kinda curious what my old 30-06 could do. Do you think the match is beyond 30-06 accurate range or would I have a chance? Thanks.

30-06 is more than capable in terms of ballistics and accuracy, provided you use appropriate bullets, etc. Do you have a DBM on your rifle though? Typically the pace of these matches requires magazines, otherwise you'll be fighting to reload on the clock.

no DBM...what bullets would you recommend? All I currently have are 150gr soft points for hunting. I'm working on getting a new stock setup now, but don't think I will have it by December.

I'd suggest trying several and finding what your rifle likes. 208gr A-max, 178 A-max or 178 BTHP, 190 or 200gr SMK...

+1 on the DBM. If you want a sample of what happens at these matches I would suggest attendind the next couple of matches that Unknown is putting on.

Good news! I just got confirmation that we get the range for practical rifle matches on the 3rd Saturday in August, September, and October. We also got a stipend from the club to purchase some much needed items.

Thanks, Unknown, for all of your time and effort getting this dicipline organized on a regular basis in the South Sound area. And also thanks to UNSC for their enthusiasm. Sometimes people/clubs are sceptical of trying new things; however Upper Nisqually has been very accomodating and encouraging <span style="text-decoration: underline">practical</span> marksmanship.

Last month I had a blast (pun intended) and am looking forward to new challenges and playing with other marksmen this coming weekend.

I'm now starting to have my initial enthusiasm renewed now that the club confirmed a regular (sort of) position on the calendar, and the money. The next step will be to get a discipline board going. That board will decide where to spend money, how to set things up, and in short decide the direction of the discipline. After all, this is for the shooters, so it only makes sense that they decide what they want to do. I just started the ball rolling.

If there are enough people showing up, I'll gladly run the match and not shoot, so that there will be 10 slots for other people to shoot. Even though the notice has been short, I'm already getting some confirmations...

To assist in preperation for upcoming practical shoots I'm working on a deck of cards that will randomly challenge shooters while keeping in mind several factors, ie: firearm type (bolt guns and semi autos will be able to complete each stage), various shooting positions, round count, time allowed per stage and range occupancy time, and practical and precision accuracy.

Looks like I'll have to build a whole new gun if I want a DBM...can't find anything for mine without spending a TON on custom one-of manufacturing that would cost more than a whole new rifle. Oh well

Sig, not sure what kind of stock you are running, but I have installed Seekins dbm in both a a McMillan and a regular walnut stock, it works.

Inletting a stock that doesn't have any bottom metal can be difficult for someone who has never done it, and doesn't have access to a milling machine.

However, if your rifle already has some bottom metal, the inletting to put in a DBM is pretty minor. If you are handy with a Dremel, Fordham, type tool or have access to a mill, it shouldn't be too hard, and you should be able to do it yourself.

Just got back from a great weekend of elr shooting. I met up with Joe1/75th, & went for a tiny bit of bear hunting, & a lot of shooting. We were @ 5000' asl at a spot he knows up Hw2. It was 80+F too so it was real flat shooting. 7200'DA actually. We started @ 1490yd for some warm up, & moved out to 1745yd, then to 1913yd, & finished up @ about 2075yd. Couldn't get a lrf to range that one so we guessed it was about 2100yd, & Joe walked into a rock out there with his 338LM. We couldn't see any of my slash out there, so I was kinda bummed, but I can't complain. I was about 10 moa past my turret adjustment. Great time tho. I'll try to get some pics up later.

Those kinds of distances make me want something with longer legs than a 26 inch barreled 300 Win Mag. I start thinking about things like a 338 Lapua, 375 Chey-tac, 416 Barrett and similar rifles. Those kinds of rifles can get really expensive, really fast. Pulling the trigger on $5-$10 per round can add up really fast.

I have even had to amortize in the cost of barrel erosion into my reloading budget. I figured that with a barrel running $600 installed and lasting 1200 rounds, that the total for components and erosion is around $1.00-$1.20 per shot. Not too bad, but the other rounds (338, 375, 416) could get spendy real fast.

I must admit that if I had the coin for it I would get a 338LM or maybe snipetack. But until we went past 2000yd without accurate lrf readings, I was right there against the 338, with my 28" 300WM with the 225hpbt. I needed about 5-7moa more than the 338. I also crossed the 2000 rnd mark with my brl but I was still holding about 1 moa out there not counting a few misses due to wind call.

Yep. Real pretty up there, but the bugs were fierce! Also a real steep climb up about 10 switchbacks to get up there.
