Hi all -

I'm having a difficult time making a decision here, so I thought I'd seek the advice of the experts.

I currently have a Bushnell Elite 6-24x56FFP mounted on my Savage 308. I'm a whore for great glass and had anticipated doing an upgrade to the glass at some point down the line. When the deal on the SuperSniper 5-20 came through, I was ready to jump on board, but now I'm questioning the wisdom of that move. I'm guessing that the SS 5-20 HD glass will be an improvement over the Bushnell Elite, but is it going to be that much of an improvement?

Buying the SS would require putting it on a CC that has a less than exceptional interest rate. My alternative is to wait awhile and buy a different scope through Bear Basin where I have a huge credit limit and can get 0% interest for a year. There are a couple of options at Bear Basin: an IOR 3.5-18x56 with a 35mm tube or a Schmidt & Bender PMIII. I have an IOR 2-12x32 on my AR that's setup similar to the 3.5-18 and I've been very impressed by the quality of their product. S&B, well...it's S&B!

Primary application will be target shooting out to 1000. I've become an addict for our regular long range tactical rifle matches.

There is no top end to "better" glass. That Bushnell you have is an outstanding bargain as is, but if you just have to throw away more money, by all means do. What do you really expect to get that is so much better than the scope you have now? The good news is that you will be able to sell your current scope quickly as the Bushnell FFP's are turning out to be such a great deal. And lots of people are looking to pick those scopes up at bargain prices. My $.02

Solid points, Ranger...there is only one minor niggles with the Bushnell: FFP has a definite downside if the reticle is a standard Mildot: at 24x the crosshairs become telephone poles

As I said, I'm a glass whore so I recognize that I'm probably replacing something that doesn't NEED replacing. That said, it's much easier to hit things when you can see them clearly.

My first suggestion is: if you don't have the money to BUY it, then don't. Debt is a bad thing, especially when you're going into it for toys.

I've got two of the Bushnell 6-24x50 Elite 4200 Tactical FFP Mil/Mil scopes; they both sit on Remington 700's in .223 and .308 and I like them a lot. It would be difficult for any of us to compare them to a non-released scope based on anything more than our opinions. So, my OPINION is that it would not be enough of an "upgrade" to justify it (even discounting that you would need to incur debt to do so). You lose 4x on the high end and gain 1x on the low end. While I don't doubt that the SS 5-20x50 has a bit better glass, I bet that they are pretty close in that department. Both are made in Japan as well.

What deficiency are you trying to fix by replacing your Bushnell scope?

Yup. With the exception of a house and an vehicle, if you can't pay cash for it then you can't afford it. Likewise, if you have CC debt, then you can't afford new toys.

JTB -

see the post above yours...only one minor complaint and that's the reticle thickness at maximum magnification.

I'm thinking that I'll wait and do an IOR or S&B in a year or so.

Thanks for the advice, guys!

If that's your *only* complaint, it's not worth it - at all, in my opinion - even if you have the money for it. Since the SS is a 20x, if you dial your Bushnell down to 20x, I bet the reticle thickness is about the same on both scopes - and you retain another 4x magnification for finding those holes in the paper should you need it.

This. Debt for toys is stupid. Really, REALLY stupid.
