Staying just off the coast of Israel would put them just under 1K miles from Tehran and most of eastern Iran.
I am not aware of any Iranian assets with legs that long.
Perhaps they are avoiding the Straight to stay out of direct combat radius/range of Iranian air assets as well as not being a juicy target for some cheap POS, low-tech Iranian sea drone.
Would definitely make some Iranian dicks hard dreaming of using a balsa wood and 10K lb shaped charge submarine drone shaped like a really hot female goat to sink a $13 Billion Dollar capital ship with 4,500 souls on board.

I know I’ve seen accuracy tests here, but haven’t seen any ballistics gel tests … preferably back-to-back, so same gel, conditions, etc.
