I'm looking for a lightweight, yet durable, daylight bright illuminated LPVO that doesn't break the bank (yes, I know, an impossible list of wants).

I have a Trijicon Accupower 1-8x28mm that is fantastic, and I wouldn't hesitate recommending it, but it is a tad heavy for a hunting rifle, thus the Accupower sits on a different setup altogether. Hence my interest was piqued by the Steiner P4Xi 1-4x24. While it is definitely not cutting edge in terms of max magnification as far as newer generation LPVOs go, it seems like it has a lot going for it on paper and based on some of the reviews and vids I've seen showing its reticle etc.

I am curious if other Hide members have experience with it, do or do not recommend it, why/why not, other options in its class/category, etc.

I just bought a gen 2 viper 1-6. The center dot illuminates and it is nuclear bright. 1x is close enough that I'm not sure I'm any slower than with my aimpoint. Covered turrets, glass is good enough I was out shooting 200 yards in moonlight without issue. Id say go look through one if you can.

I have the Steiner 1-4 in an AR build. The red dot is easy to see in bright California sun, and can be turned down to not blind you at night. The glass punches above its price class in terms of clarity and lack of CA - it is faaaar better than the 1-8 Strike Eagle it replaced, at not much additional cost. Also, Doug at CameralandNY was great to deal with.

That said, the turrets are awful. I hope you’re looking for a point-and-shoot hunting application, because you won’t be dialing precisely when you’re under stress and wearing gloves.

The reticle is okay. I’d like some wind/mover marks in particular. The reticle hashes split the difference between 20in/7.62x51 and 14.5in/5.56x45, which ends up being about minute of yote with an 18in/223W setup.

I own one and the glass is excellent, but I have had multiple friends experience durability issues with theirs.

Speaking from experience the Steiner / Burris warranty people can be total assholes and the warranty is definitely not as reassuring as Vortex.

I haven’t used any of the new Viper LPVOs but hear good things.

That is good to hear. The reticle hashmarks and capped turrets are fine with me, as it isn't going on a long distance setup.

Hmm, that is not good to hear (referring to durability). What kinds of issues have they experienced, causes, solutions, and manufacturers' actions? Very interested to learn more

yeah it's not a scope you want to dial other than getting it zeroed. red dot is surprisingly bright, glass is nice. i got mine for a backup, shorter/lighter 3 gun rifle. haven't used it much but so far so good.

I'll second the Vortex Viper PST Gen2 1-6x. After maxing out my Google foo over a couple weeks I decided on this one because it has a simple reticle like the P4Xi, and DSG Arms had a deal I couldn't pass up that included the MI QD mount I wanted. Even though I'm right handed and left eye dominant, on 1x I can shoot both eyes open like the eye piece isn't even there and the red dot is daylight bright. The only cons are the scope is on the heavy side and the turrets are extremely stiff.

I was looking for an inexpensive and light 3 gun optic to replace my magnified red dot (which, I realize the longer I'm away from it, was NOT a bad setup at all).

I looked at the RT6 and the P4xi. Had them both for a couple days. REALLY wanted 6x power on top. Kept the P4xi anyways. The glass and eyebox were that much better. The dot illumination is a nice bonus. 16oz is a great weight for a LPVO (most are heavier than my red dot/magnifier combo was). The turrets do suck but frankly you're not using this correctly if you're dialing it. Don't know about durability but I've thrown mine in a few barrels and it's fine.

Under $500 I think it's the way to go. Next step up would probably be the Viper 1-6, but really I'd just save your money and if you're going more expensive than the P4xi just jump straight up to an XTRII 1-8 or the newly lightened Razor. I hear its eyebox is even better.

I run a P4Xi on my main battle rifle and honestly I have nothing but good things to say about it. Solid size, weight and durability. Resolution is good and has generous eye relief. Throw, adjustment, and illumination as also smooth and it's all wrapped it in a very affordable package. I'd have no problem recommending it to someone looking for pretty much exactly what you seem to be looking for.

OK, excellent. Thanks for the replies. I will probably get one and report back.

I have tried the Viper PST Gen II 1-6x24 but really didn't like the reticle or the weight. The glass wasn't the issue, it's more than adequate, as my eyesight isn't discerning enough to tell.
