Made it to the range yesterday to play around with my new Hornady kestrel, ended up shooting my best group ever at 300yds. I need to find a place to make my own range beyond 500.
This rifle captured my interest a while back. Sounded very handy for a hunting application, light weight and fairly small in size. And was more than capable of producing tight groups. I followed several posts from the Dark Lord of optics and got the vibe it was a pretty nice rifle. I guess with each person comes a different appreciation for what looks right to them. I actually had a chance to handle one of these rifles the other day in a shop a standard factory build in 308. I can see the advantage of carrying this thing all day as opposed to a heavier long gun. Call me a snob but this firearm looks like it should have been used as Arnold's back up rifle in the Terminator. It has a certain H.R. Giger flair to it. The price point kind of shocking compared what it cost to have a custom bolt gun built. To each his own. If it shoots good and your happy with it that's all that matters.
So I received the price for the extension install and it's only $200 so thats not bad at all. Sent the money to order my 6mm Creedmoor barrel with same profile as the original 308 today. I'm guessing about 4 months or so from now I'll have a new barrel. This all depends on how long it actually takes to make the barrel though.

I am cutting my 22in down to 17. And May flute it as well. Next I will get a 1-8 scope that is sub 20 ounces to keep it light

Spec a custom build that is the same price or less with the same features. Seriously, because i want to build that rifle.

Does anyone know how close the weight of a factory cut off heavy 6.5 @ 16" is compared to the factory 16" 308?

My 22 is going down to 17 in the next few weeks.
According to the site 22 to 20 is about 3 ounces only . So I am expecting 17 to be in the 2lbs 10-12 ounces range. A 16 308 is 2 lbs 4 ounces. I could prolly flute it and have it down close to 2lb 4 ounces but not sure if I would.
My 20” 6.5 creedmoor Bartlein weighs 3.10
My 16.5” .308 Bartlein weighs 2.3
I can’t see chopping 4” off the 6.5 will save anything like a pound.
The .308 profile is very thin in comparison. Even the 24” 6.5 proof research. Is nearly 9oz lighter than the 20” barrel.
You could just have it re-profiled. Fluting doesn’t loose that much weight in reality.
Has anybody heard any news on magnum bolt? I wouldnt think they are putting too much thought into it at this time with the backlog but it would be nice with something like the new PRC's but im worried about the magazine options.
This is why I'm going to build a custom instead of buy the fix later this year. I want a light and handy switch barrel rifle, but i want to be able to switch between 223 sized cartridges all the way up to short mags. Unless Q develops a magazine this will never be possible with the fix, which is a bummer because the size, weight, and ergonomics of the rifle are awesome.

Cant do any mag cartridge not designed for a short action in the fix. Surprised so no one has designed a mag for the 300wsm
Because as far as i know, the fix is the only gun that needs a short mag sr25 pattern magazine. It's a niche gun and i can't see anyone developing a product for such a small market unless it's Q themselves.
I found out there used to be rsaum ar10 from dpms and armalite so the mags are out there somewhere. I must some more research though.

Looks like the PRC is out, they are 2.955" long from what I have found. Also, there have been SAUM and WSM "AR10's" out there so that mag is already designed.

Went and took advantage of the “cold front” (92 and low humidity)
Zeroed my Fix after the machine work.
No loss of accuracy. 1.5 mils left was the only shift. Elevation dead on...impressive!
Barrel stayed noticeably cooler...

Even if there were parts to do what you want, that doesn’t seem very practical. Just too much work to swap barrels. To me it just doesn’t meet the definition of a “switch barrel” because of that. In all honesty, the musical barrel fad just isn’t my thing.
Your last sentence kinda sums the rifle up though. Buy one and enjoy. Swap it to another cartridge that better covers your needs if you want, and roll with it.
My switch barrel rig will be a secondary gun for hunting or dicking around with. My primary rig is what it is and it will stay that way. I wish i could afford nice custom or semi custom guns in a lot of calibers, but i just can't bring myself to spend that kinda money. That's why the switch barrel idea is appealing to me. Yeah, you can switch calibers with the fix, but you're staying in the same cartridge family, so changes in performance aren't all that drastic. I really want to be able to switch between 223 and 308, with the short mags as an added bonus. I need versatility first. Then, down the road if i have the money, i can get the fix just because i really want one.
My issue with switch barrels is I think people over value it (in the interest of full disclosure I did just buy a 308 barrel and am switching my creed over)

But I am not going to be changing back and forth constantly. If you want that get an ar so you can change uppers. It sounds like a pita to change barrels and have to re zero scopes. If you live at the range your prolly are going to have multiple set rifles. Going forward I will have a 16in 308 for deer size game and a 300WM for anything bigger. If I want to I can put my creed back on, but don’t k ow why I would.
Also the more you have to allow for different calibers and set ups generally your tolerances, precision, or reliability go down.

Light weight hunting gun...the 22 heavy barrel creed is pretty front heavy
Yeah, call it what you want. All rifles are switch barrel rifles. What separates them is the ability to swap bolt heads, which changes them into an entirely different class of rifle. That's my whole point. I have my main gun. It probably won't ever change except to replace barrels when it needs it. My secondary gun, which i don't have yet, will stay 223 most of the time, with occasional use as a 308, and the possibility of short mags if i ever need/want one. This rules the fix out. If the fix meets your requirements, good. Get one. It doesn't meet mine...for now. I feel like people are telling me what i do and don't need when i pretty plainly explained it in the context of the magazine limitation discussion we had earlier. I like the concept of the rifle. A friend of mine has one. I'd like to have one, but for my needs, a custom bighorn makes more sense. The fix will be a "bucket list" gun for me because as of right now, other options make more sense.

I did some more looking around at who makes WSM AR's and the COAL and some recommend 10 rd pmags but it really looks like it would have to be an ASC mag at minimum then up to the Larue and KAC mags for a little more room.
I just ordered a 20" 6.5 Bartlein barrel and I haven't decided on whether or not it was a good decision. Once I found out how involved (albeit simple) the barrel swap is, it was kind've off putting to swap caliber. I guess I should have researched that in detail prior to ordering. My MRAD is much less involved to swap calibers, 2 screws and bolt head swap. I think ultimately what will end up happening is that I put the 6.5 barrel in and leave it that way.
Meh.... It is slightly more involved, but it still only takes 10 min or less. I have no need to do this in the field, so I'm OK with the complexity.
Yeah, i knew i wanted a shorty and a long barrel so i picked up two fixes. A 16” 308 and a 24” proof 6.5 creed. Swapping barrels works in a pinch but i’d rather just swap rifles. IMO these things are so cheap compared to my AIs and blasers that it was an easy decision. Glassing them hurts a bit though.

Does anyone else have this happen? Velcro shim to keep rounds from jamming into the feedramp but now this. Bolt speed and different mags doesn't seem to make a difference. Running the bolt faster just means mangled cases.

Is it the same position in the mag every time or is it variable?
Could you take a photo of the loaded mag in the rifle and the bolt head just at the position it is just touching rim. That’s where it’s going wrong I suspect.
Pretty much the same place from the left or right column. My first thought was that I was short stroking it and it was my own fault but it'll do it starting from a fully rearward and open bolt as well. Honestly it seems like this issue and the others stem from the mag sitting too low.
I could try tweaking the feed lips but then I guess I'll have to clearly mark and segregate these mags so I don't try to use them in my mws which is flawless.

I'm at 2.84-.845 in a 2.86-7 mag so I don't think that's it. As the round tilts upward going into the chamber it looks like the rim slips below the bolt lug sometimes.
The bolt looks like it is engaging the case head enough.
I have just looked at your first photo again. Is that an actual fail to feed or have you mocked it up as an example? It looks like that’s a spent case and not the new round stripped from the magazine, I can’t make out the bullet in the case neck.
Your bolt head also looks like it could do with a wipe down.
That was an actual fail to feed. After about the 3rd one on that mag I was pissed off enough to take a picture
22" 6.5CM @ 525 rounds. Two, 10 round P-Mags and two, 20 round Larue Tatcical mags, no velcro or other mods. Not one single FTF or FTE. I've tried working the action slow and fast, not a single issue. Ammo is Hornady 140 Gr. or 147 Gr. ELD-M. Max fill on the P-Mag is 8 rounds and the LT is 12-14 rounds.
That's interesting. With mine try all you want to feed any round or snap cap I have from a 20rd Larue or kac and all you will do is deform tips and drive bullets into the case because the meplat hits below the feedramp. The Velcro shim or pressure on the mag mostly alleviates it.
