Maggie’s What's Your View II

Lowe’s has 25% their cabinets. Conversation with one of our Canadian members has me wanting to finish the work bench side of my gun room

Deer opener 11/9, thought it was time to bring out the deer sticks for a bore clean and zero check.

Rem 700 BDL carbine factory chambered for 222 Mag, 4 digit SN#. Optic is a Burris 4x Timberline, now discontinued. It always shot O.K. with the factory stock, 1-1.25". A few years back I bedded it into a H-S ultra light stock, it's now 3/4" most of the time. I load it to the nuts with H4895 and a Sierra 55 spitzer. I like to use this walking tree belts and around the farmyard. 100 yard shooter.

Model 70 that started out as a 22-250 varmint, turned it into a 22-250 Improved. Smoked the barrel on P. dogs, had a #7 26" 22-250 12 twist screwed on. It never shot, no matter the load, dud barrel. At the time I had a hot shooting 6/250, so I sent it to Pac-Nor and had a slim contour 21" barrel in 6/250 installed. Already had the dies, why not? Optic is a M8 Leo 6X, as set up it's good for 200 yards. Thrives on 4320 and Sierra 80 grainers.

My deer hunting these days is slow walking small areas and tree belts. Depending on the wind and ambition level, either of these shooters fits my style.

Can't remember the last time I killed a deer at over 100 yards.

That's why people come up with cartridges like the 6x45.
Light, easy shooting and accurate.
I've been thinking of building one for a deer rifle.

Very easy shooting indeed. The first blood the 700 Mag drew was in 02 or 03, red headed daughter dropped a smallish doe, her first deer. I like it because I'm a old, beat up pussy who doesn't like get shoulder slammed anymore.

The 222 Mag was a very under rated cartridge. I know a smith who has 222 Mag Improved reamers, that would be a helluva P. dog round.

And while we are wishing, I wish you could use a rifle in Iowa. A few of the southern counties allow it now, but for those of us up north, it’s either bow or shotgun.

Wow! I had no idea. They had that years ago in the county where I now live. I used an 870 with a duck and goose barrel hacksawed off to 20 inches. Had a 4x Tasco on it and the thing was pretty accurate. My most ridiculous kill was beheading a big tom turkey at 200 yards. Took 3 shots to get the guessed holdover dialed in. Killed a bunch of deer and two bobcats with that rig.

Same same in Chicago land.
I've used this for years:

20ga works well and reasonably accurate for the job.
It likes Lightfield slugs.

Home after a 3 day trip, I’m grilling via torch light, and notice a object moving along the fence line. Certainly larger than a cat, so I light him up, and sure enough, a large (for here) opossum. Kimber Hunter running WME at around 70 yards. DRT. Ten tine fork for perspective. This is around 10ish from the yard this fall. Cat food thieves.

Can see u covered part of the Remington poster...??
Oh that thing is a piece of family history! It won’t be covered for long. Back in the day when carnivals has real shooting galleries that shot 22 shorts, when you bought a certain amount at a time, they sent a nice vinyl poster. This one have a couple wrinkles but is otherwise in awesome shape. I have a Winchester one too that’s over my loading bench?

I remember some really fun times and wins at those shooting galleries. And about 20 not wins in between wins. Kinda miss those days.

If it were me, I'd put "Mr. Remington" and Mr. Winchester" under glass in a display case with a "gallery rifle" under glass, under Mr R and Mr W, and well, I'd be proud to show that off..
And to each side, some night pics of the carnival all lit up.....
That would bring some memories... just sayin...

I have some pretty cool plans for once I inherit the gallery ?

I currently only have possession of one of the old guns. A Winchester 62. They used those and Remington range masters. My father in law has more than a few of both and a couple NIB. A display of a well worn and NIB of each with a case of each ammo and the poster on the side walls of the gallery all set up in a little building. Maybe someday...

No shooters seen this morning on the ML opener. The big boy was outside the kitchen window at 10 last night, but he appeared to be on a mission.
I'm going to leave the woods undisturbed, as my neighbors are all hunting and likely pushing their deer this way. We'll see what the next few days bring to the sanctuary.
The clovers, brassica, oats, and acorns are abundant, so there's plenty of reason to hang out here for a while.

A little bit of time in the garage stand until it got light.

A warm and wet week has the crimson clover popping, and it's being monitored by more than just me.

Out playing exurban homesteader today, taking a final whack at the cleared land before it's time to hook up the snow-thrower on the tractor until spring.

Note my sharp point at the top of the shadow.

Looking up the slope of the ridge. The marker sticks are where I'm going to go stump-clearing in the spring. The shed, too, is going next year.

We're getting an arborist in next year to help with some hard decisions. The whole area is infested with spotted lanternflies. Unless we find a control solution, the black walnuts here will soon be toast.

There's another tractor of the proper color. (y)

If any of the walnuts have to go this guy might be able to make you something nice from the spoils. I've been following his work for a while and he appears to have the knack.

Woodworking of all sorts from local supply is a cottage industry in this part of PA. You can swing a dead cat and hit someone who's either a principal in such an outfit or who works for one. We've been toying with the idea of having a massive dining room table and chairs created, at a minimum.
