Maggie’s What's Your View II

Went out yesterday. This is my old deer hunting grounds from when I was a child. Snow kept us from getting to the top and to our "spot". I will try again in a few weeks.

So This snow bank was on a south facing slope. About a mile long, 400ish yards wide and in the middle 20ft deal still. Just imagine how deep it was in march. for reference I am 6' 1".

And finally the MTV cooler dates me. have had that thing almost 30 years. Has been on some amazing trips.

Looks like a great trip my friend. And the weather held. Bonus. Looks like a shooters paradise. The eastside is open like that. Here? Not so much.:( Mulie country for sure. Any Elk in that unit?

I have never seen or herd of elk there. Part of the saw tooth national forest. But isolated from the main forest in idaho as this is a small little part in Utah.

It's just after 9pm and Rebecca and I are enjoying the tail end of our 1st anniversary.
Sitting on the deck looking towards Canada, watching freighters go by and enjoying the peace and quiet.

This is the Lee A Tregurtha. Commissioned during WWII and still in service 60yrs later.

2A, those are some incredible pics, especially the one with you holding your rifle up. For those of us in AL, it's nearly impossible to imagine snow hanging around in June.

If you can't tell. Zoom in on the picture above that. There is a guy standing on top if the snow (buddy of mine).

Not uncommon to have some snow still in the trees. The pics with trees is on the north facing slope. The road to the top goes through the trees and there was a 4ft deep section so we turned back. More guys and more equipment and we might have went for it.
That huge snow bank, drift, glacier was on south facing slope which made it all the more amazing.

A Tale Of Two Weekends:

First, last weekend, finally got rid of this ol' boy that's been in service on our family farm as far back as I can remember: IMG_1922.JPG

And replaced it with this bad boy. Things will be different from now on, oh yes:

IMG_1923.JPG

Next, this weekend - nothing but rain all week, every day. Too wet to do anything else, so might as well shoot. I call these guys the Three Wise Men. In this setup, I'm shooting prone from the bed of the truck (so I can make the distances anything I want). Guy on the left is 1000, guy in the middle is 1230, and guy on the right is 1330 yds. I started on the left, fired two (both hits) at 1000. Moved to the middle guy at 1230 and fired two hits. Then, moved to the guy on the right at 1330. Missed the first one, re-worked the wind call and then fired three consecutive hits. Then the wind shifted and I missed the next two. Had to go back to the 1000 yd guy just to end on a hit. Wind was a shifting tailwind, and that really kicks my tail. It was shifting from 8:00 to 4:00 all afternoon. Holding/dialing right one minute, then left the next. Not much velocity, but it sure was enough to screw with me.

New gear to keep things running smooth is always welcome. Good shooting Vh. A fishtailing wind from behind me gives me fits as well. Especially at that range. Caliber? 6.5 variant of some sort?

Kids were at a b-day party this evening, so, I invited the Misses out to the fire pit to enjoy the cooler, post heat wave, high pressure air we enjoyed today. Party of/for 2...

Yeah, that's a 6.5 CM that Robert Snyder built for me. Krieger 26 in. 1:8 bbl, RWS (Defiance Deviant) action, AX chassis, SB PM II 5-25. Normally, by this time of year, the range has dried out and I can extend it out to 1630 and would be shooting my 338 Norma that Robert also built. But this year it's still way too slushy where it matters to do that, so I'm still shooting the 6.5 (338s are wasting money inside 1500).

Manning, Iowa. Probably not too far? Here's the 338 Norma he built, although the NF was traded out for a SB last year:

Yup, to the SW of us a ways. I'll bet that 338 at 800 yards feels like your cheating ;). Clint Smith says, "Always cheat, always win". Very nice rigs sir!

Thanks! That looks like a great way to spend an evening. Careful though - you're running short on wood.

Beautiful early summer morning here. Temps in the mid 60's and nice dry air. Laying in the shade servicing a 695 yard target with the 308. Wind carrying the sound of impact back to me makes me grin.

The view from my window.... I am not sure whether to be impressed with the architecture.... or think that it looks like the entrance to some Drool-academy somewhere.... Maybe I'll wake up later wearing a canvas tuxedo with a Thorazine hangover...

Cheers,

Sirhr

What in the hell are you doing? Hmmm?

Architecture at the entrance looks very Russian/Eastern Bloc. Rest of the structure looks very institutional. Hmmm. Is there a prize for who guesses the city first :)?

Save that hate, because I am going next year...

Cheers,

Sirhr

P.S. I think the hat's a little wide.... And it's not my color. I'm more of an autumn....

Yea you had mentioned next year. I should be able to go the year after that. Due to an opportunity that has presented itself i am pretty sure next year is a pipe dream.

A trip through Kentucky. We stopped for a while to see a natural bridge. It's a state park about 60 miles south east of Lexington.
KIMG2302.jpg some nice view from the top side.
KIMG2300.jpg A relaxing chair lift or a 2 mile hike to the top.
KIMG2297.jpg After crossing over you take a trail to the under side. You have to go through a rock crevice.
KIMG2305.jpg

Blowing Rock North Carolina.
KIMG1370.jpg Some waterfalls around Western NC.
KIMG1390.jpgKIMG1384.jpgKIMG1393.jpg There are several waterfalls. They are not on maps but through research on the web you can get the location of the pull offs along the roads. Then a little hike through the woods to find them.

And speaking of beautiful water front shots. What a beautiful evening on the river. Youngest Son hooked Daddy up with a Growler from Zip n Sip. Any place that promotes Beer and Zip Lining can't be all that bad. He and his elder Brother work there on the lines and the Pub. So jealous. :p

There's some pretty big waterfalls near blowing rock. I grew up a little west of there.

The falls near Highland are pretty good. You can walk behind them. The falls at chimney Rock are pretty high also. Plus the ride along the creek/river is something to enjoy. There were several that we KIMG0204.jpg didn't stop for. The pull off spots were either full or were not the best for parking a motorcycle. It's a pain to pick up a 950 lb. motorcycle with bad footing.

Caught a few bass. No monsters. Skeeters were biting after sunset.
Still, if you ever have the opportunity to buy a place with a water view, do it if you can.

My pond dried up about 12 years ago during a serious bad drought. I started using well and city water for my cows during that. Fixing that pond has been on the list to do for a while. I may just make my way up to your place and set beside your pond. You can burn some miles on the bike and I will keep the beer cold.

Gentlemen, I give you Paradise. Tucker, that's a money shot right there. The lack of any Beer Cans or Ciggy Butts is discerning, other than that, that's spectacular. :p

When we lived in town the house was on a busy street at an intersection. Trash detail was almost a daily duty. The street dead ended in two three story Section 8 shit holes, so my yard trash was funded by my own tax dollars. More than one of those parasitic bastards was a none-the-wiser subject of a late night dry fire practice session. Now it's the trash pandas that pay for their sins.
