Maggie’s What's Your View II

I'm in the last week of softball/baseball hell (games EVERY night except Sunday) so I've been crazy busy. Had just a minute to share this, so here goes. Saw something brown in the fence line Sunday adjacent to our pistol range. Walked down there to find this. Only 70 yards from the house. Fortunately, it got up later in the evening and walked back into the timber where it belongs.

Great Pic. It's my favorite time of the year, and the worst. Get to see so many Elk Calfs and Deer Fawns running around, but also see too many spattered along the road. The locals always slow down for the most part and give a wide berth to animals on the side of the road. Tourists, not so much. I know the guys back east have epic numbers of Deer that get culled with vehicles, but around here it takes a disturbingly big effect on the Herd. Coupled with the "Hair Slip" that's been going on we just don't have the numbers we use to.

Had PT this morning before work. Had a few minutes and looked at the 24 certifications on the board and found a couple interesting. And then I had to take a pic of today's weather crossing the bridge at low tide.

Last two summers, I have come within a hair of hitting one with the tractor. Just two weekends ago while mowing, I had one run from the grass just about 6 inches from my front wheel. It held tight while I had made a mowing pass less than 5 feet from it. The next pass would have been messy... but it bolted and ran into a little swampy area off the field... to await mama.

Last year I had one run, literally, out from under my bucket and I think I grazed it with the front wheel. But it also skittered off.

Mama puts them down in the tall hay... when I am mowing. I have had nightmares about hitting one. Not much makes me squeamish, but I know I would not sleep well if I hit a fawn with an 84" mower deck.

Great picture Tnichols!!!

Cheers,

Sirhr

PS. this past weekend while I was mowing the lawn on my little tractor, I had the company of a fox for over an hour. She (I assume a she because she was all moulted and I think has a den nearby with kits) was hunting in the grass and in the ditch along the driveway. She paid me a little attention... and I kept calling over "Hey Ms. Fox...." And she looked at me, but just kept doing what she was doing. Watched her jump a couple of moles/rodents out of the ground. Finally, she got a fat one and carried it off. Pouncing just like a cat... and working the edges and grass like a pro! Very fun to watch. Usually they run at the mere sight of a person. Then again, that person is usually me and there is often a .223 involved. But I enjoyed watching her hunt.

Hard to beat a day of breaking clay birds.

That's for sure! I left work at noon and just headed over... it was an absolutely gorgeous day. Shot 6 boxes, and some of them doubles. Even "pool halled" a guy: "I'm not so sure, I've never really shot doubles before;" proceeded to break all of the doubles targets without a miss (pure luck)... poor guy was getting all sorts of upset 'cause he competes a ton. "You've NEVER shot doubles?!" "I don't know why I should, it doesn't exactly seem difficult." Bahahaha... Everyone at the club house was cracking up, as they know I'm not THAT good.

Damn nice Mud Bugs barney. Where about's again down under are ya? If ya don't mind.

Sorry for the late reply, I am generally on here when you guys are sleeping. We are about 20 miles North of Adelaide, South Australia. Will dig out some photos of bigger ones for you, they are excellent eating, them and Mud Crabs are my favourite.

No worries man. So, why do you sleep so much? Just kidding mate. I never made it that far east of Fremantle. Australia, one of the serious wonders of the world. LOVE THAT PLACE. Hands down, outta 40 some odd countries I've been to I can say without a doubt Australia was always one helluva show. Everything about the place was amazing, everything. Never had a bad experience. Tried like hell, but never happened. The people I met in the 80's over there were of the highest caliber. Friendly to the point you felt like family 5 mins after meeting. If I was gonna travel on my dime I'd be heading that way. You got some silly Mud Bugs Man. :p

we have blue crabs here and they no way are anywhere that size, thats for the pics.
a1j, how high off the river is traffic on that bridge???

It's a couple hundred feet to the water from the highest point. We get a few jumpers every year. Some say the weather has something to do with it. ;) Can't tell ya how many people have come up to parked cars/trucks in the middle of the night to find a note inside and either a wet spot on the concrete below or no sign of anyone if they hit the water. The good ones wait till daylight and go for the gusto and bounce either off the sidewalk, the grass near the river, or for extra bonus points right in the road.

Here's some info on it.

We usually get a jumper or two every year.
Ours are just nuts
The bridge is the Sunshine Skyway. It's sort of a bypass of I-75 into and around Tampa, St. Pete and Clearwater.

That's a beautiful Bridge. If they time it right they can land in a little john boat or something.

The fishing ain't so bad under it either

Before I started wearing out rental boats at the Marina on Sigsby Island:rolleyes:. or what they now call Dredgers Key I guess, I use to fish off the Bridges up and down the Keys when I was stationed down there. Damn that was productive off of those. Could be a real bitch getting them up though. Hated that. Night fishing for mangrove snapper and dodging gators, also epic. :p

I got the night off fellas (and I'm ok with that) from softball and baseball. Only 4 days to go. Rained out tonight.

My daughters softball team gets invited to play at the University of Iowa complex every year in a tournament. The girls think it's pretty cool, and, it is a nice a venue. My "little engine that could", plays 3rd base as a freshman on the varsity team. Poor kid doesn't have an athletic bone or muscle in her body. She earned the spot through effort, attitude, and that she's coachable. My view this last weekend...

Getting our ass kicked tonight. Heavy convective activity here this evening. Tornadoes and such just to the north of us. We've had great weather for the last 4 days. In Iowa, if you have a nice stretch of weather, you're gonna' pay. Good folks here though. Take it in stride, most messes cleaned up in short order, rebuild, and move on. We virtually have to get wiped off the map to make national news. Fly over country.

Stay safe my friend

Thanks mate, travelled the world with the military and also since I left, the wife was born in Adelaide so we ended up settling here. One of the friendliest places I found over your way was Kingman, Arizona although the memories may have been effected by the El Presidente Margarita's at Chilli's. Spent a couple of months there on a job staying in the Hampton Inn. Wife wants us to go back for a holiday next year, thinking of San Francisco, LA and Vegas.

^^^ Crappy cell phone camera doesn't pick up the color. While we're on the topic of cell cameras, here is the best I could do through the scope this morning. My season is about over as the corn has obscured all my targets but one. 695 yard target through the NF on my 260 this morning. Might have 3-4 days left, then it's on to load development for the rest of the summer :-(

Great pic. I have yet to get a decent through the scope pic. That's pretty damn good right there. You just need some taller posts/T posts. :p

yep, horses be big around here, i dont give two fucks about them, but a steady quality food supply for them is always in demand...
between the horse ranches, to the visiting horses at the tampa bay downs, right around the corner from me, they need to be fed...
therefore anyone who cares to grow, do so and i could be very helpful in the sale of your horse eating wares...

Where all the love happens. No, no Horse's involved. Can't believe you people think like that.

That far south, the only thing that much wood is good for is sitting up under a still. Fess up, boy, and run and go get us a couple mason jars.

Looks like a good opportunity to see just how much roundup, roundup ready corn can take. Just a little strip in front of the target. :-D

LOL. Unfortunately, the rows are perpendicular to the LOS to the target. Once the corn reaches full maturity (10 ft +), 30-36 rows have to come out before the target becomes visible again. I wait for that day every fall.

Runnin saw and splitter in his weather makes me sweat just thinking about. He certainly isn't afraid of work. Now, have a cold one or nine, well deserved.
