    Hammon, OK
Which of these can go through TSA and fly as carry on? Will any likely be better off in a checked bag? Will the TSA x-ray machine damage my kestrel?

    1. Game changer and mini fortune cookie.
    2. Kestrel 5700.
    3. Laser rangefinder.
    4. Spotting scope.

I don't think you'll have a problem carrying any of them on the plane. What I carried on would depend on the weight of my checked bag and how close to the limit I was. I don't see how the X-ray would cause any dmg considering people carry on their NVG tubes and those have zero issue with an airport X-ray and are much ore sensitive to that stuff compared to a kestrel.

If it looks like it might be affiliated with weapons don't chance it.

Absolutely no gun parts (triggers, mags, ammo, spent cases, rings, etc) yes Ive had them all taken.

anything that can be used for bird watching is gtg
    any electronics are gtg

I don't even say the word rifle or anything when Im asked what this stuff is. And they do ask. Have a divergent story ready to deescalate (ie bird watching)

I think each airline may have specific rules regarding electronics, but I'm pretty sure most of them will allow all of it in a carry on. I brought my game changer, LRF, binos etc all in my carry on. Helps to shed weight on your checked bag as well. Keep your game changer out when you go through the screening and just put it in the bin, because they will flag it and pull you to the side to scan it.

    Frustrated.

Just about to get on my flight. TSA just came and asked for my keys to my Pelican case. I asked if I could be present when they opened the case. He told me no and acted like I was crazy. He told me he has been doing this for 3 years and that is never allowed. Now I'm wondering how much stuff will be missing or broken because it was packed wrong or stolen. They brought my keys back and said everything was good.

I've flown with guns maybe 3-4 times, I was present when they opened my case every time.

Everything showed up ok. On my return flight the TSA at the other airport was very professional and had me stand in a specified area and watch as they inspected the cases in front of me. They checked that I was happy with how everything was packed before they closed it back up and locked it.

About 6 years ago I got to my gate and was about to board and heard my name called over the airport paging system. They wanted me back at the ticket desk to unlock the case for TSA inspection. They were viably angry that I hand to the gate, despite being given no instructions not to....After a brief but heated discussion about SWA customer service they apologized and I was able to run back through security and make my flight . Ever since then, when I've been asked for the keys, I insist on being present - when they balk I offer up to give them a form, for the Airline rep to sign, regarding their liability for missing or damaged parts. This usually brings the TSA agent up front.
This was at the ABQ airport.
Every year, since then, I wait for the "all clear" from the TSA and Airline employees before I proceed through security.
Several of the airline employees remember me by name and are really great. They have a hard job but I have a tall responsibility WRT to my firearms.

The whole point of this exercise is that nobody gets into your rifle case unless you're present.

I've taken everything you've listed above plus an extra scope in carry on without an issue.
