Why does everyone freak about a Gov't shut down?

Every time there is a gov't shut down, or the threat of one the Dems, and media freak out like its some sort of monumental catastrophe. I don't get it, it doesn't seem to affect anyone in my area in a negative fashion. I don't see anyone running around with their hair on fire. So what gives? Should I give a fuck?

It never is really a "shutdown". Mil and federal agencies still have to show up to work. VA stays open. USPS still runs. Basically all "essential" services remain open and functioning during a shutdown (which according to the Fed seems like all services). Last shut down it seemed like the only thing to close was National Parks and Forrest Service. I am sure some other agencies closed too but impact on day to day life wasn't even noticed by a huge majority of the population.

Government shutdowns are a MAJOR pain in the ass for aviation, from controllers to Customs to the FAA and related agencies on down.

Yeah, "essential employees" still have to go to work, but working without getting paid (even knowing they'll receive back pay) does just wonders for even baseline motivation, and staffing for those essential employees is purposefully light which means delays in EVERYTHING.

Yes, the sun still rises in the east and sets in the west, but ass pain absolutely exists and it almost never politically works out for the ones responsible for a shutdown.

I would greatly prefer no shutdown, as that's just bad fucking governance all the way around.

Here is what most people don't know about shutdowns with .gov. Most employees have use or lose annual leave this time of year. So everyone is getting leave slips signed now for 12/21 on. What will happen if there is a shutdown is all scheduled annual leave will be canceled and everyone will be furloughed. After the shutdown all the employees will be paid even though they did not work. All of their canceled annual leave will be restored to be used the following year. If they are retiring in 2019 that leave will be cashed out along with the rest of their annual leave. This is the best thing that can happen this time of year to a fed unless you are deemed essential. Then your leave is canceled and you have to work.

I'm not flying anytime soon, meh. Shut 'er down. The FAA guys can work for state and local governments managed at the state level instead of the bureaucratic waste of time, money, and energy that is the federal government.

That will equate to delays getting through the Smurfs at a security checkpoint and ground delays/ground stops/airborne holding metering traffic into busy terminal areas (think NYC, DC, Atlanta, Chicago, Orlando, DFW, SoCal, NorCal, etc.).

Does that impact everybody? No, it doesn't, and it is easy for one to say "IDGAF, shutterdown" if they aren't directly impacted by the fallout of such stupidity and shitty governance.
