Send a U-2 up to buzz it. Balloon might be fragile enough to rupture.
The the commie shrapnel might waft gently earthward.
Eta: I'm not sure we want to disclose operational service ceilings of combat aircraft on a low-value target. Could an F22 get up there? Probably, but why confirm it? Shame we don't have old interceptor aircraft on Guard duty. Pretty sure an F4 could have smoked it without compromising national security.

Much better photo resolution. Better signals reception. Probes defenses like satellites can't.

What is the best way to spread a hostile virus or bacteria ?
Yea, high altitude, low volume spraying.....minimum quantity required, maximum results achieved.
It could also intercept every single bit/byte of cell and wifi transmission within say 20 mile radius of flight path.
Encrypted military and police bands could also be collected.
Can't do that with a satellite since the transmission and reception is relatively low altitude.
Collect and store, decrypt upon recovery at own leisure.
Any radiation could be detected......but I wouldn't trust our gov or mil to share that data if it occurred.
An EMP is quite possible, but at that altitude not very effective.

Honestly, the balloon wouldn't have to even emit any RF if you wanted it to look harmless. Just record all data to a drive and have the balloon programmed to drop it when over international waters.
Or use encrypted burst transmission or ELF/carrier wave type stuff that most sniffers aren't spun up for these days.

The Combat Sent RC135 finally went back to Offutt (long mission for domestic flight!). Looks like it got as far as Chattanooga.
As of 0620 Eastern, no relevant.mil assets showing in the southeast. There are two Combat Sent 135's in inventory, so the other one may have been sent out not squawking, or something from another location is up shadowing the balloon. Or the balloon may have caught a Jetstream and now out of country.
Note once over the Atlantic there is very little traffic and zero civilian ADSB coverage to track planes outside normal lanes. Maybe someone on a boat in the the Bahamas or even Bermuda might catch sight of it. US Navy assets may be watching or hopefully downing the unwanted visitor for recovery and analysis. If China didn't put auto destruct equipment on it, that is.
Fair amount of ship traffic, so maybe one of the commercial vessels will see it.

A lot of conjecture and tinfoil hat theories flying around everywhere. If this current ballon does NOT have virus or something along those lines, you can bet this at least a test to see exactly what "we" will do when they do actually send another.

This was intentional. It was a wave of “high altitude probes” designed to measure response.

When no one did anything, it was a signal that the early stages of the Holocaust could ratchet up.
China calls itself Communist. It is not. It is now fascists because the means of production is privately owned and the government works for the oligarchs… and is the oligarchs. But fascism and communism are basically the same thing. Violent, genocidal and unable to co-exist with free, Constitutional Republics.
We should be acting accordingly now, before we have to act with kinetic means. Sadly, the West will not. Too pussified, infiltrated and ignorant of history and real politics.
But this whole thing is intentional and the strategists in China are adding it into their planning.

Pretty advanced wx balloon.
You know, this could be ascertaining how we respond to balloons in general. Imagine if China decides to blockade Taiwan, both with ships around it, and a flotilla of balloons above, like hundreds or even more. China can certainly crank em out in volume. With Taiwan's airspace clogged, and a US Navy unwilling or incapable of breaking a naval blockade so close to China, they can effectively cut off Taiwan's commerce from the world.
Think of it as an aerial minefield.
Normally, they'd have to be tethered, since these balloons have some sort of control (beyond just changing altitude to catch various wind currents) they could remain on station barring a cyclone or other very high winds. Plus since China can crank em out by the gazillions, if they lose some, no biggie, just launch more.
Either way, since balloons are now firmly back in the "stuff to think about" domain, may as well bookmark Windy and Ventusky to keep an eye on winds.

Judgmentalism aside, Pfizer seems keen on promoting Viagra, and what better way to effect non-aerosol disease transmission than sexual contact (especially between multiple partners). Don't see Pfizer/Viagra sponsoring Senior Citizen parades. Where are the bulk of Viagra sales? Old folks? Married couples? (of any orientation). Promiscuous sex-bingers/tourists (of any orientation). That would be an interesting breakdown.

Maybe AIDS was generated back in the 70's as a population control mechanism? COVID certainly spread pathogens far and wide, and the downstream effects (cardiomyopathy in particular) of the vaccines may be worse than (most of the variants) of the disease.
Maybe the Chinese balloon event was not only to penetrate US airspace, but put a balloon launched in China over a very specific target from thousands of miles away.
Imagine them launching thousands of pathogen-laden balloons. Do we even have the inventory of high-altitude capable weapons to defeat? Shouldn't be too much of a task to encapsulate any pathogens in UV-resistant coatings to survive the drop from 60k+ feet.
What if China launches balloons with legit WMD's (maybe they'll call it pestícides for their farmlands all over the US). Would we retaliate? With what? Nukes? China probably has as many nukes as we have, if not more. Do we have any China nuke inspection agreements? Who mass-produces stuff better than China?
So China, thanks to COVID)Fauci develops a race-specific pathogen (i.e.everyone but Han Chinese), and spreads it all over the planet via balloon. We'd be to busy trying to develop new vaccines (thanks Pfizer!) to save our brilliant leaders than nuke the sob's that created it. Because they have lots of nukes they'd use.

Considering Wuhan created the 21st century scourge, the very idea we can let a potential pathogen payload-carrying balloon cheerfully cruise across the country unchallenged is criminal at best.
There's an old story from Ken Alibek (former Russian biowar scientist) on how he would conduct war and it was simply to disperse microfine disease particulates in the atmosphere of the targeted country.
Putting them over sensitive sites could well be a cover, while we think it's surveiling sensitive targets, it's simply spreading something across the country.
I hope like hell we have whatever air-sampling equipment in inventory following that balloon every step of the way across the country. I think we had particulate samplers for nuke-sniffers, although I'm not sure if they were just spot samplers rather than continuous monitors. Radiation byproducts are continuous uncontrolled clouds. A balloon carrying a pathogen could release bits of it at will. Need continuous sampling to capture intermittent releases.
Target doesn't have to be human, could be crops or animals. Another bird flu perhaps? What would preoccupy or cripple the country to the point where we wouldn't have the time or resources to defend Taiwan?
Or is it just a distraction from us sending more stuff to Ukraine?

F-15 Streak Eagle publicly cleared 100K feet years ago, other F15 variants above 80K.
There are some scientific kilowatt-class gimbal mounted lasers used for moon bounce often at observatories that likely could put a quarter sized hole in the balloon’s gas bag.
And there are thousands of low KW-class CO2 industrial lasers that could ventilate from 20 miles away.
Citizens don’t need the government to bring the balloon down.
Streak Eagle was awesome, but it was stripped of everything, even paint to reclaim the time to climb records.
That being said, I think we can get up there easily when it's at 60k feet. If it's up at 90k that's a different ballgame. Lasers need to be powerful, otherwise atmospherics limit range. I'd guess if the FAA would allow a "free day" of fly whatcha got, we could get balloons carrying drones up there and just ram the bitch, poke a few holes in it and recover the wreckage. Would have to be an altitude unlocked drone, although a DJI downing it would be ironic.
Which is why anyone taking this as a serious threat, buying the idiot box outrage, is likely heavily vaxxed and double masked.
