My initial thought on the Criterion blanks is that it seems a bit expensive for a button blank. At that point you're not far off of a cut blank from the reputable companies, especially when that barrel will last until the end of time or until you get sick of the contour, length or twist rate.
Cut rifling is better ≠ for rimfire.

$315 is fairly cheap. Mullerworks are top of the line and button rifled….. $475.

Look at the top 50 rimfire benchrest equipment list year in and year out.. all button barrels.. 90% Mullerworks and Shilen with a couple Benchmarks sprinkled in...

It is well known that button barrels dominate the rimfire precision world
Fair enough. I'm still really new to the witchcraft that is the rimfire world. Wonder if the button rifling is what makes the difference or if those companies are putting more focus on rimfire barrels.

From what I understand, its all in the hand taper lapping... Paul Tolvstad hand laps all Mullerworks rimfire barrels and is a master at it. I dont know who hand laps the Shilens but they are excellent hand taper lapped rimfire barrels as well..

The reason I grabbed one of these Criterions is because they said they are hand taper lapping them... So Im giving one a try to see how they compare...

Do you guys have any experience with Lilja rimfire barrels? From what I understand, they are button-rifled. I am putting one of their 25" 1.2" straight taper on my RimX action.

I don’t know of anyone that uses a Lilja blank. That said, two friends of mine that had a Lilja CZ457 prefit eventually sold theirs for other custom offerings which shot much better. Could be a number of factors but you just don’t see them much at least on the RimX side of the house.

Yeah, I bought a Lilja prefit for a good deal, so I'm going to give it a go and see how it does!

My lilja on my cz shot lights out with sk rm

Just an FYI...

I just got my replacement bolt parts from Zermatt today. I have a 35XX serial # that was galling right away on the bolt. Zermatt said parts were arriving this week. I haven't installed it yet, but I should know soon if this fixes the issue.

Mine shows up tomorrow. Also serial 35XX.
Going to run it Friday and Sunday and get at least 1000 thru it.

That’s interesting both in the 35xx range and it happened. Did it start right away. I’m in the same range and prob have 500 rounds on it. It just looks like normal wear in. It’s good to know Zermatt is taking care of it.

Started instantly.
At 200 rounds it was very noticeable.
At 3000 it let go completely, and dropped the firing pin 50% of the time.

I documented round count vs wear, it’s posted thought out this thread.

I intend to do the same with this bolt body.

Zermatt has been good. Although waiting was a bummer, I’m hopeful this is the end all solution.
Receiver cleaned to the bone, and ready for a fresh insertion.

Where was the wear coming from did they say?

Bolt body arrived today.
Photos for reference.

NOTE: date in photo is wrong! (Got excited!)

100 cycles of 50 lives and 50 dries. (Approx.)
So far I can’t get it to stick. Which is a good sign. Don’t feel like the same gun. Shit is glass like and slick AF.

Will have ~500 rounds thru it noon tomorrow.

I haven't shot it yet, but agreed. The action feels completely different now. Mine was galling and gritty out of the box with the old bolt nose. The new bolt nose makes the action feel slick like it should.

Keep us updated

Short update:
700 rounds on new bolt.
Zero wear, even finish looks great.

Long Update:
Bolt now has 700 rounds, and is showing no wear. The original was severely gouged at 200 (check my posts some pages back). My gut says the issue is resolved. It’s very obvious from the very first time you manipulate the bolt, that something is different. It’s very slick, close and open are smooth. Firing pin stays put when closing the bolt. I now understand what an alpha action should feel like.

Yes it sucked waiting.. But what I can say is Ray kept cool. Always replied to emails. Answered any question along the way, and ultimately delivered.

No, I don’t know what changed.. Honestly don’t care at this point. My focus was a solution, and that comes best from the industry professionals.
I will remain confident that the issue is solved unless witnessed otherwise.

Some gun porn:
Mostly 10 shot or more groups at 50.
Various Tenex and CX lots.
Grouped first thing on clean barrel, then end of session.
Tuner only there for forward weight.

One piece weight.
Moved internal weight outboard.
Added ARCA flush to chassis.
The intent was keeping same weight and balance when I switched from the Mk 4hd to the Kahles K540 while adding more rail length.
Rifle is 21 pounds and balanced 4.5” ahead of the mag well and although this is the Pro II chassis, it is not the hogged out aluminum stock.

Very nice. I've been wanting someone to make that. Huge market to help get those matrix and vanquish to balance. If you make more or anything add me to a list. Would love to buy one.
Isn’t it sad that the actual chassis shops can’t just solve this? MPA, MDT, how hard can it be?

I don’t want to even hear about all the variables. Almost every Rimfire needs weight added, is it because they won’t sell overpriced weights? Seriously, at the very least Foundation is trying with the Sampson.
