Tikka T3 Thread

Stippling, or put on some silicon carbide?
Hey mate, I haven't seen that product before, but now you have my interest! I might have to see if I can find something similar over here, but no, I was going to stipple the grip areas myself as the moulded grip panels are a bit on the smooth side.

Question: Does anyone have experience with the 6.5cm 24" fluted Tikka barrels. The regular factory barrels shoot amazing, I wonder if there is any difference in witnessed accuracy, fluted vs non fluted?
Not a Tikka barrel, but they come from the same place. 24" fluted 6.5cm, it shoots really good.

They’re the exact same.

Side note: My wife whacked this cow at 510y with my CTR 6.5cm. 143eld-x. Pretty proud of her. I’ve never personally shot an elk.

Both of these are the 24” fluted 6.5cm barrels on a Roughtech. Well, one isn’t now, it’s been cut to 20”. Both are shooters with factory ammo. Have some loads made that I need to shoot

Those are respectable groups!! Here is a group I shot with a load I kinda experimented with. Now granted if I saw my own post I might be skeptical as it's somewhat of a unicorn, that said, I would urge others to try this load and see what happens. This is from a stock Tac A1, with their regular barrel. Do I get this level of performance on all of my shots with this load, NO, but it's very close and is constantly under 0.5MOA.

yes, that is 3 shots. I think it was 0.125

So my question is going to be could I eek out this type of accuracy with the fluted barrel, probably only way to know is to install one.

Thats great shooting. Now place 5 consecutive groups so that we can get an idea of what the average precision of the rifle is. That should then give you an idea what to expect.
I already know how the gun shoots. It's a 1/2 moa gun, and lower with that load. The harmonics of a fluted barrel is going to perform a little different than a non fluted barrel. It may be as good, and work with my load, it may not, that's what I will have to test.

Especially fluted of a different profile.

Comparing fluted vs non fluted brings to mind a bonkers thread from a few years ago. That topic easily turns into a crap show.

But what about fluted barrels vs non-fluted vs saxophoned barrels with a tuner and this bipod??????

Inquiring minds demand a comparo!

Considering that thread is in the Legendary it probably wins. Tuner was pretty crap show too. I think the fluted was in the middle of the Structured thread from 2020.
Lots of names gone now. Mcameron, gnochi, Theis (thank goodness that scammer). Lots of knowledgeable people in it as well. Frank Green, ledzep, LRI, and many more. Goes all over the place over 4 years.

For me, I would rather have the extra mass rather than fluted in some way. More mass handles heat and deflection better. Once you start removing mass it’s all downhill, IMHO

Have a 6.5 creed ctr and z3 5-25 headed my way. Now I’m eyeing a chassis, what does the mdt Black Friday sale typically look like for tikka related units? Would love an acc but $400 for a xrs is looking a little better at the moment.

They've been pretty insane in terms of the deals that you can find. I would wait for the black Friday sale if you are really wanting to go with an MDT. I think their blems go for close to 50% off give or take.

Hi Paige,

can you tell me if the MDT polymer mags are thicker in width than the metal ones? If they would be a bit wider, they would sit a bit fitter and would be harder to lose. For matches and Long Range the metal ones are just perfect.
They are both going to function the same between the metal and the polymer magazines. Most shooting competitions will go with the metal since you can have a 12-round mag capacity.

Is this out of a 6.5 cm or 260?

Great. You bastage!

Well, I didn’t do so well.

Big tips:
1) just very lightly snug an exterior action wrench on the side flats of the receiver

2) the Brownells rosin I used didn’t seem to do much. (Once the factory barrel was removed, a piece of scrap leather worked well for grip)

3) I’d just bring it to a gunsmith lol

The next factory Tikka barrel I tried to remove just spun in my barrel vise (Short Action Customs Modular).

I did a long write up on this a while back. The best thing to do besides wheeler action wrench, rosin, and barrel vice is soak the barrel/action joint in wd40 or CLP over night. You would be amazed how far that stuff gets into the threads and makes life a lot easier on the Tikka. My last barrel change was a breeze.

From KRG's website:

  • Barrel contours accepted: 1.25″ for 4″ in front of action face, then 1.20″ straight to end of forend. A 1.25″ straight cylinder barrel will fit but we feel that the clearance is too minimal. We recommend using no larger than a varmint contour to keep proper balance.

What is the barrel thickness accepted by KRG chassis? Can I use 1.250 straight barrels or maybe 1.450 in any KRG chassis?
