x47 brass is excellent, if brass lasts 30plus reloads then costing twice as much is irrelevant...actually cheaper in long run. But thats just me

FCS if the 6.5 Lapua is loaded to 2.860" how much of the bullet is being gripped by the neck? I always like to keep it atleast a caliber of grip on the neck. Could you measure that for me as i don't have any 6.5 Lapua onhand.

Well, if delivery of the Surgeon round actions continues to be "next month" for too many more months then maybe things will change.

Back in May when I ordered the thing I wasn't too optimistic about having access to my preferred dies any time soon.

That said, I think next week I will give them all a call and inquire about availability for the CM... just to stoke the fire if nothing else.

The x47 neck is .299. With my 130 vld as used in my previuos OAL examples. When exactly lined up with the neck/shoulder junction, it measured 2.735. Moving it out to 2.860 would move it .125.

.299-.125=.174

So with my 130 vld's there would only be .174 of the neck holding the bullet. And that with little neck tension to boot. Certainly not practical for a tactical gun. The 6.5 CM only has a .260 neck to start with so there wouldn'y be much to move. It did start at 2.845 with the 130 vld so I don't think you would get much for case capacity gains with the .015 of movement. I think the 6.5CM wins again.

I have several sets of hornady dies and like them fine. It looks like Hornady did very well with their cartridge design.

I don't think FCS was intending to seat the x47 @ 2.86, just that if he had to work WITHIN a 2.86 magazine then he'd pick the x47.

I was just answering rob01's qusetion on being able to seat out the bullet and get the neck to grip the caliber amount of .264.

.299-.264=.035

2.735+.035=2.77

My current OAL is 2.735 with these 130's and that has a 10 thou jam. This rifle was chambered with a 109 freebore. I suspect Jedi has a longer freebore.

Mike, useable case capacity in grains of H2O with 139 Scenar at 2.820" OAL is as follows:
260 Rem - 46.193
260 AI - 49.530
6.5x47 - 43.210

I don't have the data for the 6.5 CM but if someone else has a more recent version of QuickLoad they could add that.

My chamber was cut for 2.800 OAL and .010 jam on a 130JLK, i dont know exact specs sorry.

Very interesting that with bullet seated powder cap 260 vs x47 less than 2gr...thats surprising

Rob - Ratbert's comments are spot on. IIRC, 2.800" OAL puts a 139 Lapua boattail/bearing surface junction right at the neck/shoulder junction. Working within unmodified magazine confines of 2.860" OAL I'd go with a 6.5X47 Lapua @ 2.800" with ability to chase throat for 0.060".

I've a single 6.5X47 case that I aquired so I could make some measurements of OAL with different bullets.

I like to have at least 1 bullet diameter of bearing surface held by the neck.

Reason I made up this

260 w/ 142 SMK @ 2.800" OAL on left, 6.5 MIC on right.
6.5 MIC allows me to put a 140 JLK @ 2.930" OAL with boattail/bearing surface junction right at neck/shoulder junction, holds 0.315" of bearing surface so I can grip at least 0.264" of bullet and chase throat. Designed this in 2004 for F-open but did build up a tactical rifle in this chambering as well.

Can you run a round with an OAL of 2.93 in an internal mag? Because I know you can't in a SA AI mag.

No, not in a Rem 700 SA from internal magazine. Maybe with a Wyatt's box in a Rem 700 but I've not tried that combination. I have no intention of trying it as I can go with either a Rem 700 w/DBM or a Win 70. Yes, 2.930+" OAL can be done with a Win 70 SA by removing block at back of internal magazine.

Original use for 6.5 MIC was F-open, has worked out really well for that application as I was pushing 140 JLK at 2975 fps. 140 JLK at 2975 fps will do everything a 6.5-284 pushing a 142 SMK at 2950 or even 3050 will do and with less powder. Single shot use only so never had to worry about OAL.

Yes, 2.930 to 2.980" OAL can and does work from an AI mag (will be purchasing an Accurate mag w/o front reinforcement in near future to see if worth getting several or just modify more AI mags) with front reinforcement strap removed.

I sent my AI mags to preston and crew as recommended by GEO (gap), they have a EDM setup to do it.
Mine look factory nothing to visually indicate modification.

Not sure on Accurate mag quality.

I can relate to what FCS is saying as i did same thing in my 308, max mag lenght is 2.990 my load is 2.920 that was my tactical rig...now my F/TR rifle.

Karl, I will start with same chamber as before but just load longer to chase throat as need comes up. Thanks for help on this but having bunches of brass, comp dies and good loads wins out right now.

This is a bit off topic but related. I'm going to have a 6.5x47 put together once funds allow (will be awhile since I'm just getting started on reloading and am in the process of ordering components and equipment). I've been trying to figure out what kind of chamber would make sense. I'd like it optimized to be able to set the 130 Berger VLD's into the lands a bit initially and then have the ability to move them out a bit to chase the lands. I also want to keep the OAL reasonable and have the flexibility to also be able to use the 123 scenars and 120 SMK bullets. I've already gone ahead and ordered some 123 scenars, 130 Berger VLD's and SMK 120's. Assuming they shoot well in the rifle the primary long range bullet would be the 130. If you haven't seen this, there is some info on various chambering options and they give info on the 123 scenars and 130 Bergers at http://www.6mmhot.com/6.html . This info allows me to look at freebore and cartridge dimensions with the 123 and 130's. I'd like to also crunch numbers for free bore length and cartridge dimensions with the 120 SMK, but don't have the dimensions of this bullet (still on order and I'll also need to get the equipment to measure them). Any one know the boat tail length, base to ogive and overall length of the Sierra Match King 120?

Remember if you modify the AI mag you also need to have a notch milled into the loading ramp on the receiver to allow the points of the bullet to come up out of the mag, otherwise they will hang up. Surgeon did that for a 7WSM for me as did GAP on a 243/308 switch barrel rifle. In my experience you can reliably run OAL's of 2.945" with this set up.

My gunsmith, Mark Pharr, and I spent several months researching this very issue.  I reread the 6mmBR acticle countless times along with soliciting comments from mnay shooters here. What I can tell you is that there is no consensus and often what one person says will conflict directly with what another advises. VERY FUSTRATING!

My goal is similar to yours. I want the flexibililty to utilize either the 123 Scenar, the 130 Berger VLD, or the 139 Scenar. COAL not to exceed max mag length of 2.86". Zak Smith wrote an article documenting fantastic results with exactly these bullets so I know it is possible. A very common "do everything" free bore length that has been suggested is 0.109". Jason Baney was one of the early 6.5x47 testers and his reamer, which was spec'd based on a 142 SMK, has a 0.118" free bore. I'm also lead to believe that the reamer GAP is using is has a 0.118" free bore though, to be accurate, I've never confirmed that with George.

Finally, when I talked with Dave Kiff and explain my objective, he recommended a free bore in the 0.110 to 0.125" range. So with all this, Mark and I settled on a 0.118" free bore. Fortunately, one spec that was consistent among everyone was a 0.293" neck diameter. Interestingly, that's 0.002" tighter than the 0.295" mentioned in the 6mmBR article. Anyway, those are the basic specs on the reamer I ordered. Ask PTG to e-mail you print #16099 if you want to see it. HTH.

PS... Mark, who does shoot professionaly for Lapua, thinks the 123 Scenar, among the 3 choices I listed, is the best bullet.

Thanks for the info. I guess some of the frustration goes with the territory of using a relatively new cartridge. I saw somewhere, probably on 6mmbr, that the distance from the base to the neck shoulder junction for the 6.5x47 is 1.551, while on the 6mmhot site the reamer dwgs seem to show 1.541? Without knowing which is correct it makes it impossible to get a handle on the chambering issues. Well I've got brass on order too so I'll be able to measure it myself. All it takes is a typo and the whole plan can be built on a false assumption. At this point its just an academic excercise and trying to be informed so that I can be involved in the decision process. Before I actually order anything of course I'll talk the issue over with the builder and hope to have more solid info. I'd like to understand for myself and see that the numbers add up for what I'm trying to do if its possible.

I was shooting at RO in some stiff winds a couple of weeks ago and the 6.5X47 took half the correction for wind the .308 shooters were using. I had 8.2 mil to 1000 with 139 scenars jumping .01 at 2820fps.

Funny, I was only holding 1.5 Mils of wind at 1000.

Seriously, though, I thought I had a hot .308 setup, shooting VLD's to the lands for 9.3 Mils elevation at 1000, but that 6.5x47 walked all over it every time and twice in the high wind.

So, Doc, after four days of shooting, and run-and-gun-lose-your-brass-in-the-sand type stuff, what's your opinion if I was looking to build a 6.5 with a more practical barrel length of 22-25"? Do you still like the x47 over a maximized .308/180JLK's , or should I just get the CM and a case of ammo and be done f***ing around with handloads?

My barrel is 26 and it is great for the belly benchrest f-class stuff. I can easily get the 123gr scenars over 3000fps and 115s to 3100 but why bother.
I am going to cut down my barrel to 22 and thread it for my silencer and make my life a little easier. I really think a 6.5 creedmore is ballistically similer but I don't know about the magazine requirements. I feed from the same mag your .308 feeds from. AI mags are great, Accurate mags not so much.
I am going to keep loading for it and the .308. But for competition and convenience getting the factory loads make sense. Lapua 139s and 123s factory loads are .01 in the lands the way my chamber was cut and they shoot as good as my handloads if not a little hotter. But they are expensive.
Spin a 6.5 on the Surgeon action and see what happens. Your ejection problems may go away too.

My 2 cents? Buy all the 6.5mm Creedmore ammo that you can. The prices of 6.5 CM ammo I saw last were half of the price of the .260 match ammo. The 6.5CM is a proven winner and won't be abandoned by Hornaday like Remington has abandoned the .260.

BTW, I own a .260 and love the heck out of it. But if I was to start from scratch, I would go with the 6.5mm Creedmore!

Contrast this statement with the excellent article by Zak Smith where he says of the three,
"The .260, 6.5x47, and 6.5 Creedmoor have almost indistinguishable ballistic performance."
and
"Anyone with a rifle in any one of these three calibers would be silly to ditch a working system to switch to another of them-- they are that similar."

So, who's out of line here?

Also, how come it's fair game to say you can hot rod your favorite cartridge to out perform the factory Creedmoor. No kidding?
And if the case design of the 6x47 is so strong, what makes the Creedmoor design not so strong? I can see the .260 has a softer shoulder and more taper but the 6x47 and Creedmoor seem to share a lot of the same design characteristics. Maybe I can learn something here?

So maybe the Creedmoor brass isn't the kryptonite-infused-super-brass that Lapua uses but there are some pretty interesting and informative posts in this forum dealing with brass from both Hornady and Lapua and from what I read from folks with first hand experience the Hornady brass was looking pretty good especially for the price. And the Lapua brass? As a rule yes but sometimes not so much.

Anyway, just one of the folks this post is supposed to inform looking for some consistancy.

Here are a few questions that I had about some of the post in this thread and was hoping someone with more experience than myself could help me out here.

The on going argument in this thread is that x47 out performs 260 and 6.5CM. Because the long slender 6.5mm bullet can be loaded higher up in the neck of the x47 leaving more case capacity. And to load the 260 as hot as the x47 the OAL of the round would be too long to load in a standard AI mag. Doesn't modifying the mag/feed ramp of the 260 fix this problem. Making the 260 the better of the two? Even more when considering you have the option of cheaper throw away brass for tactical competitions and still have the option of lapua brass necked from 243/308. I know some will say but you have to mod the 260 to make it better, but it's already in a custom rifle why not customize the mag/feed ramp?

I think the brass argument completely goes away when Lapua brass is made for all three chamberings, although the 6.5CM needs to be formed. The 6.5 CM is nothing more than a 6.5-250AI. It would be easy to take Lapua .22-250 brass, Unique and Cream Of Wheat(COW) and make all the Lapua 6.5CM brass that you would need or like.

I like the longer neck of the CM/47, the 30 degree shoulders of CM/47, and the small rifle primers of the 47. That is why I went with 47 for mid-range Fclass.

Rather than drive my myself insane, I just chose 260 Remington for my current build for no other reason than a recommended smith (one I hope I'll be using) had that reamer in stock and not the 6.5x47.

I think the CM was not an improvement over the 260. The 260 would be and has been my choice of build for the last 5 customs.

Now that being said. The 47 is an improvement by using less powder and same results is an improvement. I shoot mostly 260s but would intertain a 47 for the next build.

The brass thing is not an issue. Remington brass holds it own. Maybe a little more work but If you shoot a 260, you know what I mean.

The on going argument in this thread is that x47 out performs 260 and 6.5CM. Because the long slender 6.5mm bullet can be loaded higher up in the neck of the x47 leaving more case capacity. And to load the 260 as hot as the x47 the OAL of the round would be too long to load in a standard AI mag. Doesn't modifying the mag/feed ramp of the 260 fix this problem. Making the 260 the better of the two? Even more when considering you have the option of cheaper throw away brass for tactical competitions and still have the option of lapua brass necked from 243/308. I know some will say but you have to mod the 260 to make it better, but it's already in a custom rifle why not customize the mag/feed ramp?

I understand that the brass is a non-issue and that the x47 was a more efficient round. My question was would the 260 out perform the x47 by a decent margin if the mag/feed ramp were modified on the 260 to allow it to fire rounds with longer OAL. Giving the 260 more versatility, in brass selection, than the x47 and a performance edge in a short action tactical rig.

If the thought expended on this thread was spent instead contemplating one's basic prone marksmanship skills it would become clear that any of these cartridges can get the job done. And, even if any of these cartridges could be proven to be better than others the effect would be masked by shooter imperfection.

Very true a well built custom rifle will out shoot the trigger man 9 times out of 10. The question was more of a technical what if. The 260 already has better options for brass. Was wanting to know if it would have a noteworthy performance edge with a modified mag/feed ramp. I don't have a way to measure the new max powder capacity of the round with the new OAL, but if I had that. Then the numbers should be able to be plugged into a ballistic calc. To see the drop/drift improvement of the round before and after the improvement. Then compare the results to the drop/drift of the x47.

1000 yd - 28.25 moa

8.2 mils @ 1000m -- what kind of MV you running with that load?

Mine works out to 8 mils at 1000yds.

My muzzle velocity is only 2750, but I have to use 2850 in my ballistics program to get it to jive with what is actually happening down range. I've never figured that one out, but I'm not going to complain about it. I thought maybe it had something to do with my thruster brake. My dad had an identical barrel and load without a brake, gets the same MV and only has to add about 25 fps to get his drop chart to match.

It could be that my scope is tracking a little more than it is supposed to, its a standard Viper. I guess I will find out for sure when my new SS 5x20 comes in.
