Thanks, I've heard of steel core, just wasn't familiar with the non metallic term. Looking forward to shooting with you guys, I only have a few Saturdays off next year but I do have four months of sick leave saved up.

All in all, not a bad day in the hills. There was a few flurries around but no fog in the morning so we got to blast some clay pigeons @ 750 & 925yd before the snow started. Then it really got to snowing later on before we got down to the 1250yd spot.
On another subject. My friend Ed was told Fri that his father has passed away. Some of you know him as Shiny. He was the guy that drove everyone back to the top of the hill @ my matches in the old army truck. I need to drive him over to Spokane tomorrow to help retrieve some of his belongings. Should be a fun road trip in the snow...

Had a nice turn out and a good time yesterday at the monthly match and learned a few things.
My unsupported/supported standing and kneeling do need work and
more layers of clothing are way better than less because I froze my ass off lol.

Great to see everyone again along with some of the new shooters !

I don't think this is getting publicized as well as it should be. Here in Washington the WA State Lottery has partnered with the WA State Dept. of VA Affairs in a raffle where the proceeds go directly to the V.I.P Fund. The tickets are $10 and <span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="font-size: 17pt">they're only selling 200,000 total tickets with a $1 million dollar grand prize</span></span>. If you're near a WA Lottery Retailer or machine please consider contributing. More detailshere for those interested in learning more before purchasing a ticket. This is NOT a lottery but a raffle. There's also $100 & $1000 prizes. Raffle ticket sale ends January 1st, 2013 or when 200K are sold.

UPPER NISQUALLY PRACTICAL RIFLE RESULTS FOR 15 December 2012

We had our larges turnout to date. We had rain, snow, wind, and sometimes all three together. However, everyone was safe, and the match was won in a decisive manner by a first time (to use anyhow) shooter.

Where I can't find anyone's "handle", I will list just enough name so you can figure out who you are. Feel free to send me the "handle" you would like to have me attach to your name.

Also, please let me know which rifle type you used, and I'll edit it into here if I get it within the edit time limit.

Many thanks to Broker for doing the lions share of spotting hits, and to Ry and Joe for their help with scoring. The help really makes it run more smoothly!

The club has allowed us to have more than 10 shooters, but as we shoot on the 550 yard range, shooting so we are off the range in time will likely limit us to 15 shooters.

Please remember:
1. No bullets that will attract a magnet (no ferous content)
2. Upper power level is rifles similar to 30-06, 308, 8mm Mauser, 303 British
3. All first time shooters have to attend the safety brief/orientation at 08:30
the day of the match. Match starts at 10:00, and entry is $20.
4. Matches are on the 3rd Saturday of the Month through April 2013.

As yesterday was the last day of Hannukah, all that is left is to wish everyone a MERRY CHRISTMAS, and HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Thanks for running these things it has been fun, I've learned a lot from all of you whether it was just watching or advice given. I'm looking forward to the next one I can make it to! Until then take care!

Well we had a bit of a hicup on the way home. They closed the damn pass!!! Idiots with bald tires driving too fast have all lanes blocked near the summit I guess. Why can't everyone have a 4x4 with good tires!!! Or stay the f@#&k home! So new we're stuck in Ellensburg in a snow storm for $75 that I didn't need to spend.

A friend of mine wants to place an order from Powder Valley again. If there's anyone local that wants to get in on a group buy and split the shipping/hazmat let me know. He's got roughly 20lbs worth of stuff he wants and I believe they do up to 50# per shipment.

At the Findlay Cup years back we had a group photo of all the shooters, the same topic came up and members listed their location in the photo which helped a lot.

Yes, this was my first time ever shooting any kind of a rifle match. Although I've shot pistol matches before (IDPA), I've never done anything like this before with a high power rifle. Also true, I've never practiced any of those shooting positions: standing, sitting, kneeling or a rooftop (unsupported or supported). Does shooting soda cans out in the woods many years ago with a .22LR count?

A big thanks to all of you who took the time to offer advice on shooting positions and sling usage (especially sssamurai). I had no clue and I appreciate all the lessons! The loading problem everybody could see I had was because the bullets are too long for the magazine and the tips snag. I often need to push on the rear of the case to pop the tip loose for each bullet to feed. That bolt will sometimes bind if it is all the way back (it is still pretty tight). I’m still trying to find a shorter OAL that the gun likes.

The rifle is a 7mm WSM from GAP with a Templar action, and 26" Bartlien barrel (Total weight is about 12 or 13 lbs). Scope is Bushnell Elite 6500 tactical. Base metal is Badger. Bullet speed is about 2800 to 2820 with Berger 180 VLD hunting bullets (slow but accurate). It groups under 1/4" and drills a single hole at 100 yards all day long. Broker gets credit for teaching me about drop calculations vs. observed dope. Any feed problems are my fault.

I apologize if I upset anybody doing well as a beginner - I didn’t expect to shoot so well. I'm not sure I'll compete again as I need to buy some larger mags, etc. to keep up. I had a great time and enjoyed meeting everybody.

So you took 1st place but need more equipment to be competitive? Sounds like the equipment you had worked well. As for the feed issue. Have you tried seating the bullet in farther so they won't bind in the mag? I have had the 210 vld seated up to almost 1/4" off the lands & still shot well. Just watch the run out.

Usually, the upper power limit is things like the 30-06, 308, 8mm Mauser, 303 British, 6.5x55 and so on. But because Seattle-LongRange's load wasn't loaded up really hot like the 150 grain bullet at 3000 FPS, I figured his power level was about on par with the 8mm Mauser and let it go.

However, for general purposes those calibers noted above are our upper power levels, as any more can damage the hangers for the steel, and some times pock mark the steel when we put it in close.

It just felt like a real mechanical disadvantage with the loading problem and especially with the small magazines. I lost a lot of time loading bullets from my pocket. I probably lost 20 seconds each of the four turns fiddling around with the hardware. If some of those other shooters were just having an off day last weekend, on any other weekend I'd get whipped. I just want to concentrate more on hitting targets than loading.

I definitely need to get the OAL much shorter!

Although my mags aren't stamped with a brand, they should be made by Accurate-Mag (according to GA Precision). Accurate-Mag only sells a 3 round capacity WSM mag, but 4 rounds fit in mine (you cannot seat the mag with the bolt closed with 4 rounds because the 4th has no downward travel whatsoever - an extremely tight fit). GAP says AI will work but needs some modifications to the lip. Accurate makes a 7 round version too (probably also fits 8 rounds). The cash flow is short this month, so it will be a while before I get my hands on any new stuff.

My empty brass fits inside a .308 AI mag by width - not length. I'll definately check out AI going forward.

Scott... YOU DID GREAT! So quit worrying about it, lol. And as nice as magazine capacity is, it doesn't mean anything unless you can actually shoot which you've proven. I know guys who can compete with NO bottom metal and just a blind magazine with occasional top feeding yet still finish in the top and put others to shame. If anything look into an armband for carrying extra rounds in case you need to single feed, or maybe get a few extra magazines. If it isn't broke... leave it alone!

Rarely is there a photo of me with my rifle, but here is a photo. I'm typically at the Machias and Ravensdale shoots. Made it over to the E Wenatchee shoot here last month.

However most of you would probably recognize my spotting scope more than anything else.

If you can do fri that would be good, otherwise Sat-Sun. Sat forecast is calling for a few showers, but fri, & sun should be only partly cloudy, & light winds. I'm hoping that most of the snow has melted off as well, or I'll need to repaint my tgts something other than white.

Foam is uncut and I just want to get what I put into it plus the cost of gas if I have to drive to meet someone. If you come pick-up from me here in Bremerton/Silverdale then no extra. I'll be driving over to Wenatchee tomorrow via Hwy 18 and Auburn, so if you want I would probably be willing to give at cost then as well since I'm already out that way. With shipping I paid $187.75 which is well below normal retail even with a coupon.</span>

I ordered a Manners T4, can anyone recommend a smith to bed it? It is a Savage 10 with blind mag but I ordered CDI bottom metal and ordered the Manners inlet for that. I'd like to keep my business with someone local who is a member here if I can. Also the stock is four months out, is this to early to book a bedding job? Thanks in advance. DJ

Marine-tex is one of the most commonly used bedding materials, and is usually found at sporting goods stores that sell boating stuff, and many hardware stores. McMillan used it to bed my rifle, and I have used it to bed lots of rifles.

I have a can of spray on release you are welcome to, or most plastics stores sell some kind of mold release that will work fine.

There is a really good tutorial on this site about bedding rifles that will help you out immensely.
