For those that read this and may not know, .004" throat erosion is great, but it's not the only indicator or how long a barrel will shoot. I had a 6 5x284 Warner Tool put together for me that only burned off .015" in 1000 rounds (which is amazing for a FagMag) but it was fire cracked 18" down the bore and gave up at around 1100 rounds.

Ok, I like reuben call BS on your throat wear. Given the fact most reamers start rifling at a 1 deg angle, wearing 10 thou happens rather quickly, not much there to wear. It does not affect much, and rarely with the type of bullets we shoot, are we going to have to chase our lands right away if at all.
He gave solid advice on measuring wear, it all has to be the same. I rebarrel at least 3 rifles a year, and I've seen guns still shoot with .500" gone, and one comp match barrel give up totally w/o a setback with .028" wear.

I picked up a new 6 dasher Aug 27th, I think I have roughly 400 rds down the tube. I'm at 005" erosion right now, I had to measure one gun, lol
I'm running 34gr of RL16 under the guise of cooler, low pressure, pushing a 110 Sierra at 2880, 27" HH 7.5tw barrel.
I can measure my oldest XC barrel, chambered Jan of this yr, 1100 rds, not going to be pretty on the erosion end, but throat does not look bad in my Hawkeye scope. 110 Sierra at 3080, 39.6gr of RL 16, I'm not shooting this gun for barrel life.

I would agree that erosion and firecracking are two different issues. But I would also argue that they are indicators of each other since they're caused by the same thing. I can check firecracking with my Hawkeye but there's no benchmark in a visual inspection. I track erosion bc it has bearing on how much neck you have left to use in your case, it tells you what your current jump is, and it qualifies the firecracking you see in the borescope. It also gives you something concrete and measurable to compare barrel after barrel to.

My last two Dasher barrels shooting 105s and later in life, DTACs, both held a solid .005" per hundred. We had the reamer reground so I can shoot 105s, if I want, for the entire barrel.

My current 6SLR barrel shooting a very mild load of RL26 and Dtacs started at .0025 per hundred and picked up to .004 at 800rds.

My next barrel is going to be a 6Creed shooting 115s and either 4831SC or RL26 at 3000 or so. Interested to see how it does. I have no doubt a mild load of 4831 will be easier than 4350.

I welcome the first .002-003" of erosion, it now takes seating error out of the equation. With a new chamber, you find the magical depth, you can push the bullet into the case a couple thou and retain the accuracy you want, but seating closer to the lands is a recipe for fliers. Just my .02. and I do this a lot.

I agree that erosion and fire cracking are both important, and both a result of the heat. I have had barrels burn very little throat but still give up flyers or around normal round count. I assume, all other things being equal, that the lot of barrel steel must just be good but the cracking still damages the jackets to the point they I'll get off call shots at 1k.

Generally have my reamers set up either putting the bearing surface just above the neck shoulder junction(I shoot mostly SMKs) or a zero freebore and we just throat for the bullet we use. Thankfully, SMKs and BHs usually shoot acceptable accuracy (for me, meaning half moa to 600 and moa to 1k for 26 shots) even with a huge jump. I get sighters, so I'm not really tweaking the load.

NRA highpower is hard on barrels. We also have the advantage of perfect downrange feedback for every shot, so a barrel I consider shot out may well be fine for PRS, etc. N160 and H1000, if they work for you, have proven to add about 50% to useable match barrel life. Sam Tedders helped AMU work up the 6.5x284 loads back in the early 2000s. That load helped get the AMU LR shooters (Any Rifles) through a season without a rebarrel. Never happen with h4350 or H4831(SC). Unfortunately I never got the N160 to shoot in the FagMag, and H4350 is plug and play but it burns down the barrels in 850 -1100 rounds.

Ya, I won't plan on a course of action that depends solely on H1000. I haven't gotten it to shoot as well as RL26 or 4831 in the 3 cartridges I ve tried it in, but I always give it a shot.

I like to take my load and rifle to F class matches. No better measure of what your load is doing across a 60rd sample.

Yup, H4350, Varget, RL15 and H4831SC are mainstays for my rifles except 300wm, where Retumbo has been great for me.

As to F class, for guys trying to learn wind IF they can accept a lower score and use the matches to get drift dope you can put a lot of good data in the book. Hard to not get sucked into wanting to win through.

I'm at a point now, where I just accept the barrel life and chose a caliber accordingly. Unfortunately, shooting different chamberings throughout the season has me a little off in my calls. The price one pays for not picking one rifle and sticking with it.

RE: Reloader 26, are you running longer strings? We are finding it shoots 10-12 shots into tiny little bug holes at ludicrous speed but once we get to or around 15 shots we get really odd flyers. So the first string looks like a 100-7x and then the 2nd string will be like a 97-6x with shots lost out the top and bottom.

Picked up some H1000 to try. Hogdgon says I can stuff 48.0 gr in there as a Max load, compressed of course. This is 46.8. I've never done compressed loads, just going by my photo, is this a no-no?

Drop tube made some difference. No way I'm getting 48.0gr in there, this is 46.8 Peterson SRP brass. Again, never having done compressed loads before I'm not sure if this is a bit much. I've got loads from 43.2 to this in .4 incremei. We'll see this weekend!

H1000 worked well in the 6mm creedmoor for me. Everything is speculation or subjective at best when it comes to barrel life and H1000 vs H4350. Not that it doesnt help but how much does it actually help. 2%? 5%? 20%????? To have any meaningful data you would really need multiple identical barrels fired to end of life under same conditions in a controlled, repeatable manner with both powders. Otherwise there are way to many variables that affect barrel life to argue whos right with any factual debate.

I'm about to start load dev with 110 SMKs in a 26" 7.5tw Rock Creek barrel done by PVA for my Nucleus. I'm planning on trying both H4350 and H4831sc. In 2 prior barrels (1 a 7.5tw HH currently at 1450rds, the other a 8tw HH currently at 400rds) 42.3 gr of H4350 got me 3050fps (in the 7.5) and 42.2 gets me 3100 (in the 8tw) so I'm aiming for around that speed. I'm going to try H4350 today and H4831sc tomorrow. I'll report back on accuracy and speeds/es/sd variations.

I have IMR 4451 and H4895, no sure how they compare burn rate wise, but I’m happy with H4350 right now.

25” Bartlein 5R with 209 rounds on the barrel.

I absolutely agree with having an alternative or switching because of scarce supply.

Hornady in my Rem 700 and necked down Prime in my Defiance. Loads are 42.3 and 42.2 respectively

Just to add my experience here. I shoot a 6 Creed in a Accuracy International AXMC, Alpha brass, 115 DTACs, uncoated. The AXMC will pierce primers quite early even with mild pressure loads, so i looked into using H1000 as a means to reducing / flattening out the pressure spike. With the Alpha brass, it became apparent that the brass has lower capacity than other brands - i can only get ~45gr of H1000 in before serious crunching. I settled on 44.4gr, under a 115 DTAC, giving 2930 fps out of a 26" barrel. Thats plenty fast for me.

I have had great success with hybrid 100v under both 107 and 110 smks. Low single digit sd's. It's suppose to be cooler burning than h1000. 24" Krieger barrel, 6.5 creedmoor brass necked down, cci 450, 107 smk im getting 3100 fps... we'll see how many rounds I get before accuracy drops off.

Been shooting H1000 in a 26" Criterion chambered in .243 AI. Sitting at 2400 rounds right now. Barrel has slowed down some, but is still shooting half moa. Speed with DTACs started off at 3050 fps based on dope and is sitting around 2965 fps right now based on dope. I do not have a magnetospeed or labradar. I have not chased the lands at all and the load was very stable until it slowed down. I love the fact that I only had to do load development once and not tweak the load. It would help if I had a magnetospeed to monitor velocity loss. I have another identical barrel to screw on. We shall see if the second lasts as long as the first. I did clean the throat with JB every 200 rounds. It does seem to be a pretty dirty powder.
