Maggie’s What's Your View II

Started a home for customers we build for 15 years ago. The house on top outgrew them! Now ther're downsizing to a more manageable ranch home. Pretty nice views from almost every room in the home.

So, my bother in law who is a real religious type and me not so much were sitting down at the table eating dinner one night. You guys have gotten to know me a bit and know I can be a smart ass. My brother in law is The laziest sponge I have ever met in my life and I wouldn’t piss on him if he was on fire. Well, so he is pontificating about the virtue of this, that or the other thing when I interrupted him.

I says to him ‘brother, I’m a shoe in for heaven’. He is flabergasted and looks at me like I’ve grown a third eye. He gets his wind back and says ‘ ok, I’ll play along hows that’? I says to him ‘simple, Jesus was a framer’? Radio silent after that??? House looks great amigo, just tell me your a Hitachi guy? If your using a side winder just don’t mention it in polite company?

Old school , worm drive skill! If there's anything better than being on a frame, I'm not away of it! Always framed my homes, now I only do two or three a year, and my old body can handle that!
Steve McQueen couldn't top that escape! :)

Two funniest framing moments:

We’re cutting tails in Scottsdale AZ in a high end neighborhood at about 6am. Guy walks up asking about what we’re doing and how do you guys do it in this heat.......wearing a speedo over a diaper???
#2
Tell a laborer that I ain’t waiting on a lumber drop and go cut me some 92,5/8” studs out of lineal. Go back to what I’m doing and run out of studs so I go to see what the hell is taking this kid so long. Peer off of the second deck and this kid is on the ground doing what I told him......with a sawzall and getting his ass kicked with a Skil laying on the ground right next to him???

My view for the last many hours has again been the inside of a hospital with Pam and her mother. If our dog got into the state her mother is in we would probably be prosecuted. Voluntarily signed do not resuscitate, living wills etc do not seem to count. At least this time her speech has been affected so we have not had to hear her asking us to end it. Sorry guys, would not normally have got into the Bourbon for another couple of hours.

I'll bet if we collaborate, we could come up with an awesome book! After 40 years in the business, between subs, employees, customers, suppliers, bankers, bureaucrats, and inspectors the book would have more print than the Bible! :) Hopefully someday, we can get together and share stories over some beers and brown liquor !

sheeting the roof
tack all the plywood on, pulling all rafters on to layout and sending new guy up on the roof with a box of staples and a mile of hose and gun
say go to town
2 hours later he comes down with a full box of staples and says "done"
"wtf" we say, "why a full box"
his reply, "don't they come through the hose?"
you can't make it up

??? A favorite rookie hazing was to send the laborer to the compressor and tell them to load a box???

Sorry to hear that Barn, hang in there. Please know there are lots of prayers for Mum, Pam and yourself coming your way from the Hide. (y)(y)(y)

No, you “Arrived”......Envy......

Don’t remember the last time the rim was this green. Love this place? Working ranch just east of Greer with cabins spaced well apart from each other. There’s a crick that runs through the bottom that the critters come visit. Saw a cow elk this morning but she was too far out to get a good pick? I’ll box up some clean air and send it your way?

Me and my forest friends. Monster bull elk that would make @1J04 and @Rthur cry like little girls. Leica put him at 278?

Of course a lemon garlic shrimp pasta with a cold Kilt Lifter to wash it down with. Cooking up the shrimp on the grill with the doe a stone throw away and coyote shit adjacent to the grill. Tough to be me about now???

Best regards and prayers sent. When you're going through Hell don't stop.

Took a little day trip into the blue ridge yesterday to visit Virginia Distillery Company - and American single malt distillery dream made into reality by Dr. George Moore.

They've only been producing for a couple of years and have already picked up some prestigious awards.

I had contacted them in advance about possibly donating something for an upcoming auction fundraiser for a local Autism support group. They generously gave me some goodies to take back home for the cause, and it probably didn't hurt that I purchased a substantial amount of their products as well.

The day was special for them as it was the release date of their cider cask finished highland whisky, a delicious Fall sampling as both a straight sip and as a mixer.

Some of these are photos from the website, because they took better pictures than I did.

Boby Mill - Grain mill made in the 20's. They were so well built that the company went out of business because they never got repeat customers. Buy one and it's the last one you'll ever need.
This one was brought over from Scotland, as most of their equipment was. It was refurbished with a new belt, some fresh paint, and a couple of new chrome handles. Other than that it is as it was built 100 years ago.

7200 gallon tanks do the heavy lifting at the various stages of production.
They should make beer too, because the malt at that stage smells amazing!

The brass box on the table in the middle is where the distillers monitor the distillation process and separate the heads, the hearts, and the tails. The hearts are where the good stuff comes from. The variety of barley they use produces very little wood alcohols and methanol, so the heads and the tails are recycled back into the next run. The depleted malt grains are given to a local dairy farm.
They have just begun getting the desired variety of barley from some growers in Wisconsin. Previously they were importing them from Europe.
They also are growing about 5 acres of the stuff on the property here in Virginia, but they admit it's more of a novelty, because the 5 acres would run the still about 2.5 days.

The speartion cabinet is built to be locked using the heavy hasps you see across the length of it. They are required to be locked by law in Scotland to prevent tampering and theft. There is no such requirement here, and the distillers not only rely on the hydrometers, but also on sight and smell when determining when to switch over for the hearts run.

Whisky or Whiskey

The star of the day! Single malt distilled in cider casks from a local cider brewery.
They are still importing whisky from Scotland. This was by design so that they could have finished product on hand when they opened to the public. They have their 100% US Made Single Malt in barrels now and waiting it out.
The Virginia climate matures the whisky at a much faster rate than it does in Scotland.
They can lose up to 7% a year in evaporation, so we'll likely never see a 12 or 15 year old from them. It's not necessary to age it that long here. Generally one seasonal cycle imparts the right amounts of flavor and color while preserving about 250 bottles per barrel for sipping.

You can actually purchase a barrel and have them make the whisky to your specifications. The cost is $10,000, which works out to about $40/bottle. Group buy?? "Snipershide Single Malt"? "Spindrift Whisky"? "Minute of Mountain"?

The donation - A tasting tour for four and a pair of their tasting glasses.
I'm adding a bottle of the cider cask to sweeten the deal.

The haul
This batch #9 of the Port Cask is really the best I've had. A hint of smoke in this one that I hadn't experienced in any of their previous batches.
I stocked up.

Shoot don’t shoot decision of a different flavor........clouds you see are monsoon and I’m an hour away from a decent dirt road on soft dirt. Not my first rodeo so I jumped back in the truck. By the time I made it back to a decent dirt road it was raining so hard that it was bouncing with rain mist in the trees.

Meanwhile back at the cabin:

Part of the ranch compound before I left. Of note are the two signs on the side of a cabin with mileage to Greer and DC:

Gotten to know these folks over the last 10 years and their my kinda folks. Hard working conservative ranchers that want as little do do with gov as possible. If you bring up the Mexican wolf there will be a pointed conversation??? They have become prolific in this area and of course......their protected ?

Any of you elk hunters coming to AZ for your hunt your in for a treat. Their fat and their everywhere?

Can't find their port cask anywhere for sale... I would like to add that the the bar at home?

You also might see about calling the distillery directly and having some shipped to your local ABC or liquor store.
I griped about not being able to find it locally a while back and they sent me a message in a few days telling me my bottle was waiting for me at at the store 15 minutes from my house!
