I know the VQ could do better. The problem is "me" with the 2lb trigger, I spend so much time shooting my V22 & V22s with 3oz TT triggers I don't have the trigger discipline for shooting a light weight rifle with a good 2lb pull.

Jerry, I have your score posted. Man, that new rifle sure is shooting well. I finished Nationals in 56th place, with an agg of 2087.50.
125 shooters present for the match, all unlimited. Winds were challenging for me, but I was able to shoot a few good cards. I shot a pair of 2200's, a pair of 2100's, and single targets of 2075, 2050, 2000 and 1975.

This was my 4th Nationals, but the first time I have shot over 2000 for my agg. So, I finished in my highest ranking position and with my highest agg for a National Tourney. From that perspective, I feel I am headed in the right direction. However, my goal for the Tourney was to shoot my national agg (2116), or better, and I missed that slightly. We'll see, maybe next year I can make another step improvement to my rank and agg.

Last month using my Cabela's points, I acquired a used 10/22 with Clark Custom Run-0ff barrel, Butler Creek moulded stock, overside bolt handle and trigger that that been reworked to a crisp 3# with no discernable over travel or let up. I suppose it had been set up as a race rifle back when that competition was popular. The plastic stock didn't work for me so I installed a laminated stock (as best as I recall it's a Tony Mele Avenger style which I purchased as a blemish on Ebay) previously removed from one of my other 10/22's due to a crack and a couple of small delams which I repaired with super glue. Also, I installed a bag rider which I fabricated from red oak and a Mueller 8-32 MD scope

My first step with a new 22 is to determine what ammo it likes. For a 10/22 I don't spend a whole lot of time on Lapua or Eley black box ammo as they exceed my budget for this rifle. For a screening test to determine which ammo the rifle likes I shot five shot groups (in some cases repeating the five shot groups) for Aguila (SE-SV, Golden Eagle Target, Golden Eagle Pistol), Norma (TAC-22 and Match-22), SK (different lots of Standard Plus, Rifle Match, Pistol Match), Eley (Contact, Club, Remington Club, XTRA, S/A Benchrest Precision, Club XTRA which has a dimpled bullet like Match), RWS Semi-Auto, CCI-SV, and Federal (711B, 922A, and Auto Match).

Clearly the rifle likes Eley ammo. Based on these results additional testing will be needed with Eley Club, SK+ lot 22152/14294. Eley Contact, and SK Pistol Match Special. Although the best group was shot with Eley Club XTRA (which I believe to be Eley Match) it isn't available any longer an I'll probably reserve the 500 rounds I have left for my 40X.

Given I had 35 rounds remaining of the no longer available Remington Eley Club XTRA, I elected to shoot a match grade target with the rifle. Bull #2 is very close the plug definitely touches the 10 ring. This rifle is well on it's way to earning a better scope.

Attached is the new Eley X-Shot target with the X-Shot app score. The target was shot with my V22S using Lapua Long Range. The APP is very easy to use and it makes the scoring much easier. The targets are rather pricey.

Got to the range early yesterday and it was cool at 60 degrees and light wind. Warmed the rifle up and then proceeded to this target. My first 3 sighters on the left were all 10's so I thought maybe this is my day to get a really good score. Target #1 on top left first shot was a nice 10 and then after I shot the second shot I could not believe it but it went almost right where my first shot went. I had to check to be sure and there is a slight difference. Maybe the first time I have ever got 2 shots almost in the same exact hole. Now I figured this is my day to get a 200 on this target. My next shot was a 5 on the second target and then things continued like normal. I hate to give up this competition, but sure wish I would be doing better.

The wind came up, I got the same fliers I've always had with this rifle, and see zero improvement. Perhaps, it's time to have the barrel cut back to 20" or give up on this gun altogether.

Trying not to focus on the negativity I also changed rests on my Annie and managed one point higher with the same X-count as last month.

While I don't disagree that the more expensive grades of Eley, Lapua, or RWS would result in higher scores, I'm more inclined to blame my technique inconsistency as well as inability to read the wind where I shoot (buildings and trees around the shooting lane). In the case of my M1215, it is a parts rifle that I put together from a barreled action, OEM buttstock, and a forend that someone made. I elected to have the forend installed by a professional gunsmith and have regretted it as he didn't do as I asked. These days it's difficult to find gunsmiths who understand Martini action rifles.

Part of the issue is that the 27" barrel causes the rifle to be front heavy which I have partly corrected by adding weight to the buttstock. The gunsmith who installed the forend only bedded the first couple of inches of the forend which I have attempted to correct with aluminum tape bedding but I probably need to bite the bullet and reposition the forend attachment screws (or add a contact block between the forend and barrel at the end of the forend) and glass bed the forend. When shooting Martini's or any two piece rifle the position at which front rest contacts the forend is critical as is the bedding of the forend. I recut the crown myself so that is suspect as well.

I was able to shoot a little this afternoon. I think the wind was occasionally blowing down the hill which caused a few rounds to drop low. I still need to figure out my new range a little. But I'm happy with the cold dirty bore cold shooter group, the low round was either the 3rd or 4th of the string but it's well within the acceptable range for me. Those other low shots not so much...

Also gave this one a go (I had the target turned sideways to fit on my backer):

Hi Larry, My last target from NH, heading back to SE Pa for the winter. Will miss the range in NH much better than what I have close to me in Pa. Also a picture of my VQ Light weight with a tuner. Could not get the tuner to work on my V22, decided to give it a try on the VQ. I think the weight on the barrel had a positive effect.
