6.5 Grendel

I know its probably been asked 100 times, whats the pro's and Cons on the Grendel? Reason i ask is i picked up some brass of of a friend of mine and got couple hundered pieces of grendel brass. So instead of sell the brass i thought why not build a Grendel and put the brass to good use. Now i have plenty of AR's can never have to many. But i dont have a grendel so my question for the masses is do i call AA and buy a upper? Or do i build one? I know in the past some folks had trouble building their own 50 beowulf which is alot simpler now but i dont want the grendel to be a nightmare to build when i can pick one up already built .

pick up a JP barrel or a Proof Barrel and a JP enhanced bolt and bolt it to your favorite upper and go to town. I would recommend a good adjustable gas block and a JP Silent Captured spring as well

I'm in the same boat after that post on the SBR grendel. The itch to build a grendel got inescapable after doing some ballistic estimates. I'm going to go with a full JP built on a pistol lower with a SBA3 brace but they have normal length grendel barrels in 18" and 22" lengths depending on your preference.

The important parts are the JP Barrel, BCG, gas block and silent captured spring. Being able to tune the whole system including the gas, mass and spring rates can really get you a nice operating window with a super soft, smooth cycling rifle. With the JP, you can either build your own from top quality parts or buy the whole thing tuned perfect from the factory.

Don't forget lilja if you build an upper. My 12" is awesome.

There are two different types of Grendel bolts with .125 or .136? face depths. Make sure to get the right one for your barrel. .136 is the correct one as originally designed and Jp, lilja and most of the quality brands use that.

I'm just tugging your nuts. The Grendel is a really cool round, shooting steel at 800yds next to a 308 you'd think it was the same round. It's pretty impressive to get that much downrange energy out of an Ar15.

I used a grendel for a little bit. I had a Satern barrel that shot really well. My furthest hit was at 1,193 yards and it hit with enough energy to ring a full size IPSC steel plate and move it a little bit too.

I switched to the .224 Valkyrie though.

I just bought the barrel 4 days ago. I am hoping to zero it tomorrow at the very least. I don’t have 1,200yds shooting distance close enough to test this weekend. I am curious myself on its performance.

I switched to the Valkyrie because the BC of the bullets you can use is higher, and I dont hunt large game with my AR15. it’s just a target rifle/small game rifle.

The 1,193 hits were definitely pushing the limits of the round. They were lobbed into the target. My elevation was maxed out plus holding for elevation and wind. I had to hold way off target to get hits. Dont recall the actual hold. It takes a few seconds to get out there and hear feedback.

Shooting suppressed, I can see and hear 6.5G ring steel at 1000, and even at 1100.
I will be surprised if the .224V will hit as hard at those ranges.

All I have ever used was factory hornady 123gr eld black ammo. It was a good price, consistent, and accurate.

I like Grendel, and feel like it’s definitely the most versatile cartridge in the AR-15 platform.

If you’ve got the $, an adjustable gas block, JP LMOS and a H2 SCS is pretty magical.

This is the barrel I had. It was very accurate, and the price is $350 for a fluted barrel with a headspaced bolt. Never heard of the company until my gunsmith told me about them.

I have a LaRue in 6.5g. I have got the best groups I have ever shot! 1/3 moa happens from time to time... with Hornady black 123 eld match. Get easy hits at 1k with the right wind call..

I have been thinking of getting an sbr kit sense people seem to be talking about how good they are as SBR ... PSA keeps having an 12inch pistol kit on sale for $400 I have done well so far to stay way from it.. my credit card needs a break lol

Awesome. Thanks for that. Im gonna piece a few things out for that price i can sell my TC Prohunter in 204 and buy both a 204 barrel and a 6.5 barrel. Interesting!! This may happen before the first of the year now lol. Thanks

That hornady 123gr black ammo is the best I have used. I never looked into 6.5G as an SBR. Is it superior to .300blk? I figured you needed the velocity in order to make that bullet do what it needs to do.

Hell yeah! I accidentally did that once with a spare buffer spring and a roll pin. Somehow convinced the wife I was only a couple parts shy of a whole rifle...

All part of a greater plan! And yep thats exactly what i told the wife i said well i already have enough stuff to load for it so im just gonna get the few parts i need to finish building it. Worked twice so far why not go for a third or a fourth... i do not see it ending here either ?

I almost went .224 Grendel, but I did not want to be stuck reloading ammo for it. Is that in a AR or bolt action?

The furthest on paper 600 meters, where it will hold sub MOA in good conditions. I have shot it out passed a 1000 yards in PRS matches on steel, and if I do my part and watch the wind its quite a good performer. You have to push those 108s north of 2700fps to maintain supersonic passed a 1000.

Not sure what length barrel you are running but a 105gr @2950 from the 6 rat is pushing it hard.

I'm running 95SMK at 2870 fps out of 22" and it's getting up there in pressure.

Was pounding a 12" or so sized plate at 933Y in the wind today no problem. Let two other guys try it, they thought it was a cool cartridge.

12" plate is pretty good for me at 500 yards currently ? ofcourse i dont have the scope to stretch it out past that honestly.
