Maggie’s Who's Ditched The East Coast For Montana, Idaho, WY, ND or SD?

My first time posting here, so please excuse any protocol breach or violation.

Anyone ditched the east coast for the states of MT, ID, WY, ND or SD?

Probably an odd question to ask right off, but as I see the political winds drifting in my current home state of Maine, influenced/infected by the migration of those from states who have already given up their liberty, i.e. Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, I can't help but ponder a move west in the future. Spent 3 weeks out in eastern WA, Idaho, Montana, and WY for my honeymoon in 2015, and left with a distinct appreciation for the wide open spaces, the big sky, the lack of concentrated liberal bastions, love for the people, and frankly awesome terrain for scoped rifle work. I'm a business guy, and also work in emergency medicine, so think gameful employment, a real concern when moving these days, should be gtg.

Not to be a political partisan, I'm just a liberty loving Jeffersonian Republican, and see that we are one election away from a potential loss of liberty.
Toss in the extension of the government welfare state to assure loyal voters, and I'm pretty sure I don't want to stick around and see the result.
I hope I am wrong, have spent the last 2 decades building a life and business here, but I'd like to hear from my bothers (and sisters) out west, and what they observed, or found.

If you've moved and like it, would enjoy hearing why, the corollary is also true, if you're seeing the same shift out there, may be I should stay here and fight the good fight.

Welcome to the Hide. Born and raised in Iowa and have lived here the majority of my adult life. Our weather sucks enough that it keeps out most of the riffraff. Still pockets in the larger cities though of the left. Find yourself in the rural counties and if you’re squared away you’ll get along just fine with nearly all the folks.

Ehhh I don’t know about Montana either. My mother lives there. 5 years ago she bought a 60k house. Now it’s appraised at over 120k. The Californians have moved in horrible and buying everything up at over cost. She lives in the bitterroot valley. Gorgeous place as long as it’s not tourist season. She moved there from great falls. Not near as many tourist but flat and not much to see on the plains. I’ve got a picture she sent me from the dmv that shows where people have moved from to Montana. If you would like to see it pm your number.

I moved my family from california to the dakotas in 2010, and we couldn't be happier. There is no shortage of good people and places. It would also be pretty easy for you because nobody hates maine, so they won't automatically hate you. Most of the bigger cities still lean hard left, sometimes extremely. At the end of the day it is a better place to raise my children, and that's what matters to me. FYI, I did not try to bring california with me like the yuppies that moved to western montana.

Yea, WA has the same issue as upstate New York, large metro areas, which vote liberal, that ruin it for the rest of the state.
Liberal problems flowing into areas that aren't afflicted.
It's tough. That's what I want to avoid when considering a new location, looking for a state with no major urban centers than can overthrow the will of the people in the rest of the state.

Now that's depressing, same thing that happened to coastal Maine, its like locusts, only ours are from Boston.

Thanks for the encouraging words, sounds what I am looking for.
I did see some of that when I visited Bozeman, a little too built up for my taste.
Even Kallispell seemed to be on a development roll.
I've seen enough big box stores and strip malls to last me a lifetime.

I'm much more a rural, small town guy.
I grew up in an area that had more dairy cows than people, and I liked it that way.
Had a general store, local AM radio station, small in town doc, and everyone waved to each other at stop signs.
Not quite an off grid type, but close. God, Family and Country, in that order.

Funny how these threads pop up... I too am also considering a move into the western area of the country... Have lived in RI my whole life and its really starting to suck the life out of me. Weather is so unpredictable, winters seems to get longer and longer, and then when the weather finally gets nice the tourists come rushing in.

I have been looking at places like Tucson/Phoenix and possibly Utah or Colorado. I am a mechanical engineer supporting the DoD so I would prefer to move to an area that has an abundance of engineering/tech jobs available, which makes AZ a prime choice. Also thinking that constant warm weather could be good for me!

This is true. I moved to Spokane in '99 when my dad got stationed at Faifchild. I have watched the east side (including parts of Idaho) explode in population. Lots or people moving from California where it has gotten too expensive. Then there are the lawmakers of the west side that attempt to make very stupid laws.

Im starting to go crazy. The end goal is to buy dome property and move out of the city. But that yakes time, and ai just finished paying back my student loans.

I grew up in Northern Virginia in the 1980's and 90's. It was solidly conservative during that time. But, by the late 90's I could see it was going to become another liberal shit hole. And man was I right. I gave up a solid paying job and moved with my wife to NW Montana 8 years ago. I don't regret it for a second. I wouldn't return to any state on the East Coast above North Carolina if you paid me. Now what the guy said above has some truth regarding MT. Assholes from California and their disgusting ideology have moved in in droves. Property values have increased (which is good for those of us that bought years ago). The state has a piece of shit Democrat for governor and a scumbag Democrat senator (John Tester). The state is not as solidly conservative as you might think. There are pockets of liberalism as bad and in many other states. But overall, it is 1000X better than living in Virginia with the traffic, illegals, insane housing prices, liberal assholes, etc. And most importantly, I can target shoot from my back yard and no one gives a shit.

The problem with most people that flee what they consider S.H. areas to be free is they bring parts of the S.H. with them. I grew up in Wyoming and saw it over and over again. We need a dog catcher because we cannot have dogs rooming around. Now that we caught the dog we need a place to keep it and adopt it out. They fail to realize we never had a dog problem because problem dogs got shot and no one said a word.

Currently living in Fargo and it honestly isn't bad. Rest of my family lives in the center of the state around Bismarck area. The only bad part has to be around the oil fields and around a few of the reservation. You get those rats off the reservation a d they typically cause nothing but problems.

All in all it really isn't to bad around here. Lots of jobs and lots of new construction as well around many towns

The range in Cheyenne actually goes out to 1027 yards. I helped stake and range where the new berms are now. It skips 900 because of the landscape.

I moved back west to NV about a year and a half ago, I am about 30 minutes east of Reno. I moved from VA north of where Tucker is. I grew up in Montana and still have family and friends there. If I had a choice I would go back to MT but stay away from Missoula, Bozeman, or Billings. If you live near Butte you better know how to box or run really fast. The Great Falls area is not too bad, but I prefer the smaller towns closer to the mountains. In WY Casper and Cody are good areas, I personally would stay away from Cheyenne.

The NE part is awesome, and all the stuff that keeps people away from there is the main reason it is awesome. We think the prairie is beautiful, the hunting is amazing, the LR shooting is effortless. Not for everyone, as evidenced by the population density in the west, compared to the east.

My understanding is that it is doing well, but we don't actually live there anymore:-( We will move back in a few years, but work took me other places in the meantime.
